Is it Arsenal, or Arsene??

I know Porto loom, but a couple of things struck me this weekend. One was Cesc Fabregas equalled Bobby Pires record of goals scored by a midfield player (according to the stats), the second was one of our blogger’s comment about a French Goalkeeper called Hugo Lloris.

He asked ‘who would want to live in London?

realsocialdad was referring to football and questioning why a player like Lloris would make such a move when he is so happy at his current club. Lloris is twenty four years old, he’s French and he plays for Lyon. A very good question.

What does nearly every half decent French player want to do if they feel the need to move abroad?

Don’t they,

1) They want to move to the English Premier League.
2) They want to play under Arsene Wenger.

No player, regardless of how happy they are at their own club, will rule out a move if the time and place is right – by that I mean the right club and for the right money.

Look at Chamakh, taking it as read that he has signed some kind of agreement with us to be true – why didn’t he choose the Dippers? Surely they would have offered him more wages than us?

Maybe they did, but ultimately it probably came down to playing under the management of Arsene Wenger, just like so many before him.
One player who made that move from France to Arsenal, albeit a while ago now, was Robert Pires – I remember reading an interview with him; it was after he had scored against Southampton in the FA Cup Final to win us the trophy, he had not long signed an extension to his contract.

Bobby was playing in France before he signed for us, why would he want to move to England? Why would he want to play for a club based in the centre of London?

Ok, Arsenal were doing pretty well having won a few little bits of silverware, but why us?

Was having a bit of a tiff at his club in France enough to make him pack his bags and head to England?

Some even suggest he moved after boycotting Marseille, who knows, who cares?

I don’t think either are the reason for him moving, my view is that he, just like many other French and other overseas players, wanted to play in the Premier League and came to play for Arsenal because of Arsene Wenger.
When Bobby was due to extend his contract, other English clubs wanted to nip in and acquire his services and to be fair they would have probably paid him better wages, especially when one of the clubs was Chelsea. However, he said that after a little bit of thought he signed his contract extension. He then went on to say something like ‘I always knew I would!’

English players sign for us because of our club tradition and history, overseas players come to us because of our manager.

That has always been the reason why I can’t usually jump on the ‘Arsene Out’ bandwagon. Would Cesc, Ramsey, Vermaelen, Clichy, Sagna and many others be playing for us today if our current boss wasn’t our Arsene Wenger? Would we have signed Henry, Paddy, Anelka, Petit and many others had it not been for the ‘French Connection’?

I don’t think so, what do you think?

Reality is, the English Premiership is one of the best, if not the best football league in the world, Arsene Wenger is one of the best managers in the world of football, so put the two together surely there is only one club that any overseas player would prefer to play for?
Sadly though, most players think of their pocket before football, so they go and play for the big rich and heavy in debt clubs – us, we get left with the players who want to play football, play for the best manager and play for the club..

Any player would want to play for Arsenal, as long as we pay the right transfer fee, and pay the player the right wage.

Not forever I know, because don’t we all want to go back home….. One day?

    Morning all

  2. brdgunner says:

Spot on. In addition, a lot of people moan saying were 2 or 3 players short and his his fault we don’t sign them. In this current period of our history/future it is because of him we are 2 or 3 players away from utter domination. Without him we would be 8 or 9 players short.

    COME ON THE GUNNERS

  3. Mark C says:

I think it is a combination of factors.

1 – To play for a bigger team – we dont sign players from Barca and AC Milan
2 – They believe in the club – the ethos of playing young players
3 – They want to play with Cesc, Van Persie and others
4 – If they are French – they want to play with other French players
5 – They want to play under Wenger
6 – We pay them more than they currently get.

You can change the order around but these are the influencing factors

So – the French keeper would be tempted to play for arsenal.

  4. rico says:

Morning Mark, and welocme to Avenell Road brd..

  5. rico says:

    Morning rsd

Mark – you are right, there are many other factors, but Arsene is the biggest I think..

  6. Erick says:

Mornin all from the back problem to Cough RSD seek doctors advice

  7. Mark C says:

    Hi Rico

I do have concerns who will replace Wenger when he leaves and stops football.

The thing you cant ignore is team spirit – Campbell has installed some of that.

Lets hope we get some news about Gallas being fit and a new signed contract.

  8. there are many factors he might be tempted
    but
he has been noticed by the french national team
and has been called up ahead of frey
the french league is a competitive league
with both french teams with the advantage in CL
they will be looking too progress to QF
    the coefficent will go up

    could chamakakaka be another flamoney?

  9. Mark C says:

Rico – players, and great players will sign for Arsenal once Wenger has left. They may not be French – but last time I looked France are not the dominating football power they once were.

  10. Erick says:

Rico i think its been Arsene for sure, Robinho has also lashed out at Mancini for his inability he score for Fun at his loan club and Brazil he claims Mancini was not giving him the confidence which i think AW does very exceptionally

  11. Erick says:

The French connection is a factor Coaches want players they can talk to without interprator a coach may be instructing something but the interprator may twist Communication is very important

  12. rico says:

I worry to about who will replace him, had rather hoped Bould would be involved with the first team and getting ready to become his replacemnt

  13. rico says:

    Morning Erick

rsd, but AW probably has a ‘bat phone’ to the French national team, regardless of which country a player in is, if they are that good, they will be spotted imho ..

  14. think the league ability to sign the best players in world will slowly be affected by the 50% tax on high end earners
i wrote on here a while ago that we prem footballs pay the most tax compared to the european counters
even andrey ashavin has mentioned it before

  15. rico says:

Spot on re Robinho Erick, if a player isn’t happy it shows on the pitch, look at Chamakh’s stats for this season 😉

  16. watching JJ’s youtube’s yesterday
    he looked worse than almunia
    as for commissioner wenger
    “bat phone”
i.e. im sure giles has his eye’s peeled

  17. oh great stats
bordeaux are top of the league and he plays everygame
so he must help in some way much like dudu

  18. rico says:

    Ah, good old Grimandi 🙂

  19. rico says:

but compare them to the season befor rsd, before all the rumour talk started, i think he was on top form..

  20. looks like we’ve got wenger for another 8 years anyway with the way ivan going on

  21. rico says:

Mark, that’s a good point about the French, is that the players or the dreadful coach thy have?

Look at England, they have been shocking the last few years, especially under Mcclaren, but Capello has made the same bunch of plyers look decent..

  22. according to the stats he’s about as good as last year

  23. rico says:

best he gets on and win us some silverware then .. lol

  24. Erick says:

Last Season he was leading top scorer Chamaka that is

  25. rico says:

Thats what I mean Erick, because of that the transfer rumour began, he knows he wants to test himself in England, I think he wanted out last summer, but Bordeaux wanted him to stay – he was unhappy and his goal tally went down..

Just like the lazy tinker who now plays for Citeh..

  26. Mark C says:

Rico – Would Steve Bould have the Kudos amongst top players in Europe?

Bould as a coach – perhaps in the Pat Rice role, but we would need a Bergkamp if you want an ex player.

I have said we should go for David Moyes if he is around.

  27. rico says:

Mark, probably not and maybe your suggestion would be a better option. I would love DB, but his fear of flying would be a problem..

I think Moyes will take over from Old Red Nose..

  28. he is this year erick as well with 8
they are a real footballing team and share the goals about i watched them the other week v the greeks

  29. would love moyes to mark

  30. rico says:

rsd, I am hoping the Chamakh story is true, think he could be good for us

  31. maybe we could show moyes that our scotish heritage
and he might chosse us over utd

  32. right dog needs spining then im off
just to show who much i rate moyes

    http://realsocialdad.blogspot.com/2010/02/toffee-anyone.html

  33. rico says:

SAF will retire real soon though, AW has a few more years in him…

  34. Erick says:

But with Cesc, Nasir, Theo, Rosicky ,Song and Diaby feeding Chamaka am sure he would average 25 a Season don’t 4get the Citeh tinker admitted that the midfield helped him score goals especially Cesc

  35. Mark C says:

Rico- Moyes has a history of bringing through young players.

He has also bought really well.

If we win the CL and that is a big if, Wenger will consider his future as he would have achieved his biggest target.

  36. rico says:

Mark, I think he has bought excellent players and has made Ererton in to a quality side. I also wouldn’t mind him at Arsenal after Wenger, however I think Manure will need a new manager before us and sadly I think it will be Moyes.. 😦

I can’t see AW hanging up his boots just yet, he has a big bunch of youth to take to the next step in their careers..

  37. Erick says:

I like Moyes but Mourinho is the Manager i would like to see take over from AW he knows how to win Trophies and get the best out of his squad

  38. rico says:

Have to go for a bit, Sainsbury are calling 😦

  39. rico says:

Not him please Erick, not Moanrinho 😦

  40. Erick says:

    Y not Rico?

  41. rico says:

Cant stand the man Erick – gotta dash, back shortly

  42. Erick says:

    Ok

  43. he is winner with W erick
but he never stays anywhere more than 2 years
dont think he would get on with the board
and because of this you never see if he could continue the youth policy
you’ve got a feeling he would not use the youth in the domestic

  44. K-TR7 says:

Morning bloggers.AW will not retire until he wins the cl twice or thrice and until one of his youngsters wins the world player of the year crown, his ego wouldn’t let him retire until he achieves this.SAF’s jewel in the crown is cr9 and now shrek, together with countless other titles i’d say he is about to call it a day .i am going to revise my assessment of AA.He came from the russian league at his peak,he had to adjust to the pace of the pl which he did almost immediately.when morzart and nasri play as widemen we play alot of pretty triangles with no end product.they track back alot therefore we aren’t likely to concede, sometimes we sneak a goal or we are scored by fluke, individual brilliance or an error.when AA plays he exposes our fullbacks hence we are likely to concede but opposition defenders will always be wary of his threat hence he will be tightly marked but still he can produce an individual moment of brilliance to win the game,he can score from any angle which is phenomenal;i know who i’d rather have in the team.

  45. K-TR7 says:

Fab4 sat out morning training,it doesn’t look good for him.possibility of him playing tomorrow is very low.

  46. Erick says:

I still wouldn’t mind Jose taking over i like his winning Mentality and am Sure he would continue the youth project RSD just to prove he also thinks long term

  47. Erick says:

K-TR7 Cesc doesnt need to train his game is stuck in his brain 🙂 🙂

  48. rico says:

Hi all, what have I missed then…

  49. rico says:

News is breaking that Cesc will not play tomorrow 😦

  50. Coadsi says:

    Hi all,
If Nasri played as well as he did on saturday with song and diaby there as well, methinks we should be ok for porto.

  51. rico says:

Hi coadsi, can’t disagree there, play Nasri alongside Song, then either Rosicky or Diaby

  52. rico says:

oops, didint see you had written Diaby 😦

  53. Coadsi says:

oh ok rico. hey i did not get to post on the weekend but my favourite moment in the match was when theo pushed fox (i think it was) after the tackle.
i would rather us not playing cesc if there is any doubt about his fitness rico.

  54. apparently he’s out not even in squad

  55. rico says:

Me enither coadsi, otherwise he will be out for ages, and we need him for the run in. it was good to see a bit of fire in Theo..

I saw rsd, bit of a wotsit really, but we shouldn’t rely on one player, Nasri I think would be ok for this game

  56. he proved he’s more than a replacement in that role

  57. Coadsi says:

Hey any of you peeps have an opinion on this Chamakh fella?

  58. rico says:

Me coadsi, I can’t wait to see him in an Arsenal shirt, don’t ask me why though 😉

  59. rico says:

It’s kind of funny really, quite a while ago here and on many others blogs sites, fans were saying that Nasri is a ‘middle man’ – i hope he fills that role until the return of the little magician

  60. Coadsi says:

rico i would expect that from you. but i am talking football wise 😉
I dont know if it makes sense having both him and bendy so methinks something has to give. i would rather if the rumours were not true and we did not sign him.

  61. rico says:

oi oi coadsi, nah, he looks too much like Ronaldo, not my cup of cocoa 😉

Dudu and RvP won’t go a whole season without injury though coadsi, look what has happened in the last couple of months, Eduardo, Nik and RvP out, Theo preferred on the wing when he plays and add to that Vela has been injured forever…

We had to play AA up front with Nasri.. I had hoped it would be a big strong goal scorer like Carlton Cole, but I guess he would cost us mega money..

  62. he’s a bit further ahead than bendtner
    him being 26
as of a player kind same-y as him but dont think the squad need to larger strikers
so dont see why we need to get rid of him

  63. Coadsi says:

i would say bendy is ahead of him because he has never played in the prem so where prem experience is concerned beny is ahead. dont know if he is a better goal scorer than bendy is either (in terms of efficiency). my problem with the deal is Le Boss always says he is looking for better than what we have at the moment and i cant buy that arguement when it comes to Chamakh. For me, he is on a free so thats the only reason why Wenger will go for him.
If wenger has all those forwards available to him i guess dudu would be the last selected as he might not complain about playing time.

  64. Sid says:

hmm.. i would prefer to see rosicky filling in cesc’s role.. his ability to pick a pass far outweighs nasri’s.. also rosicky is always looking to get forward whereas nasri as much as i love him has a shade of hleb fever in the brain.. and as long as denilson’s role is curtailed to that of a bit of carnival entertainment with saint niklaus at half time.. we’ll be fine..

  65. Sid says:

oh and emmanuel-inho eboue.. what a star!!!

  66. rico says:

Hi sid, we are lucky enough to have one or two that can play in that role..

agree, we need to keep Nik rsd, we dont want to be selling strikers

  67. wouldn’t say it the only reson he’s gone for him as he has been trying to sign him for a year or so now
just bordeaux wanted to much money
just saying he’s ahead cos of age and for the last 2 seasons he scored in his league and champions league
    more than bendtner has

  68. “was” needs to go somewhere in that first sentence

  69. K-TR7 says:

AA must start due to goal threat and cutting edge.morzart won’t start since he can’t play 3games in one week.

  70. rico says:

Hi KTR7, I think Rosicky will start, AA has to, as does Nik and Theo imho –

The biggest question is who will play RB, Sagna or Eboue??

  71. Coadsi says:

i think rosicky will come on about 60 mins or so for AA23 for the same reason u said ktr7. Eboue to start for me.
anyone knows if merida is in the squad?

  72. K-TR7 says:

Cesc not playing will work in our advantage.in the dragao they harassed cesc throughout stiffling our attacks.make no mistake,we will miss him but when he plays we are a bit predictable.when nasri and diaby play, they can interchange comfortably leaving porto baffled since they won’t know who to mark.diaby and nasri are ice-cool finishers too and they have thunderbolts in them.i’m also glad tomas is regaining his old form and is enjoying his football,it won’t be long till he gains a regular starting berth.

  73. rosixty has play twice now last week
    i doubt he will again
    but Andrey can go left
    AA niki theo
    nasri
    diaby song
    at a guess

  74. might confuse porto
as their game plan of kicking cesc
has gone out the window now

  75. rico says:

Bloomin heck KTR7, that’s confident 🙂 Maybe you should write the ‘get us all up for it’ post for tomorrow 🙂 ( i mean that too…. )

  76. Erick says:

Cesc ruled out but we got enough magicians to kill off Porto

  77. Erick says:

    Evening all

  78. Sid says:

agreed..we should keep all our strikers.. including nik.. even though he has the first touch of a pregnant hippo and the movement of a walrus.. hes still young (though i hate saying that) most probably going to be rsd’d predicted starting line up is my guess too..

on the chamakh bit.. i dont think he is going to be a hit.. but then again i dont own a pair of magic glasses that giles and wenger seem to possess..

    3-1 to arsenal.. 😛

  79. Erick says:

Sid our midfield made Ademoney score goals even when he was walking 90minutes Chamaka will get as much as he gives to the team

  80. rico says:

Sid – magic glasses 😆 have you got a magic hat 😉

  81. K-TR7 says:

Imagine this,TR7 on the right, diaby cm and nasri am.if they mark nasri,he moves to the left,AA right, diaby am and sicky cm.porto’s gameplan would be out of the window.Diaby and AA are our most direct players while theo has pace to burn.if we start with theo,AA and bendy as forwards, they will be forced to defend no matter what meireles says.if we nick a goal, porto will attack hence the game will open up and if we concentrate for 95 minutes,we will keep a cleansheet.sagna must start for this to happen.in the latter stages of the game we can introduce eboue for theo and morzart for AA since they can cover for the fbs.sicky will give us tactical and technical edge while eboue will give us directness and athleticism useful in counter attacks.i’m no AW but that would be my thinking for the game vs porto.

  82. Coadsi says:

short straining vid on arse.som shows merida, but no sign of song.

  83. Coadsi says:

k-tr7 i would start eboue and the move him upfield during the latter stage of the game. and tr7 will have to come from the bench as well.

  84. rico says:

You guys need to get here tomorrow, we need positive, positive and more positve 🙂

Song is back AW has confirmed it

  85. K-TR7 says:

Sagna will start since we shouldn’t concede and we need a goal to advance.eboue will only replace sagna if we desperately need a goal.Hulk is quick and strong who loves cutting in from the flanks, vermy should have his ice cold eyes at all times.Falcao is a nippy player although big sol isn’t the person he’d want to face just like eddy being bullied by terry.clichy should ensure varela doesn’t get a sniff/cross into our penalty area although sol and verminator are aggressive defenders.Song will guard against counterattacks.AA will have to step up as our attacking talisman with cesc and rvp out.he may not trackback but a midfield of nasri, diaby and song can cover for his defeciences. When cesc plays,we are more dynamic and threaten to score at all times, but against porto the goal may take a while to come so we may need to be patient and it will come.defensively we will be better since diaby and nasri do alot of defensive work compared to cesc.

  86. Sid says:

haha erik true that.. i agree with coadsi start with eboue.. porto are no burnley but eboue definitely seems to play with a couple of neurons functioning at right back..

song back is music to my ears.. i dont think fran mirinda has the experience to start a CL knockout game..

  87. your right ktr7
would have thought sanga would start
but clichy does need some cover
would like rosixty to start over aa as would track back
hopefully using theo pace we will be able to get in behind them as they left alot of space in porto behind them

  88. Erick says:

Fran will may be make the bench but we need to be tight at the back Song will be vital with defence Keep The Faith

  89. rico says:

    Great comment KTR7

I’m with rsd, Sagna will prob start…

Spot on re Song Erick, big big game for him

  90. rico says:

off for my dinner, back in a short while..

  91. K-TR7 says:

Fabianski’s blunders have made this tie difficult.eboue always seems to have a lapse of concentration in him and thats why sagna will get the nod.rosicky and nasri create pretty triangles with little endproduct while AA is all about ensuring the ball is in the back of the net.he is an explosive player and we need him to go ‘anfield style’ on porto;he is quite phenomenal and can score from impossible angles hence i see him starting.diaby, nasri and song should cover for his defensive defeciences since we need 100% of AA’s energy in porto’s final third;no pretty triangles please, goals are the primary goal and AA is your man.

  92. Coadsi says:

did anyone watch the bolton game and able to comment on the performance of Jack? i know he scored for them but how did he play overall?

  93. didn’t watch the game

    but here you

  94. just worry about clichy being exposed to valera
    like in first game
although clichy isn’t the same player now he’s back to the clichy of old
tho saying that he can tackle we saw in dippers game

  95. Coadsi says:

    thanx rsd

  96. Sid says:

hmm K-TR7.. i agree with most of what you say.. except for the bit that nasri and rosicky play in pretty little triangles.. like i said earlier.. nasri is great but he has a shade of hleb on the brain where he runs around in circles, doesnt take too many shots and plays a lot of passes back and sideways.. rosicky on the other hand plays a lot like arshavin and diaby in the sense that they both turn and make their way towards the opisition goal instead of looking for the closest pass to them.. this was really infuriating in denilson’s game against burnley. at one point he passed the ball to diaby while diaby had 3 different opposition players within 1 metre of him..

  97. K-TR7 says:

Sid-i get your point but am saying when nasri and tomas play together in attack looks toothless.anyway rosicky has played 2 games in a week for 60 odd minutes will most probably mean he won’t start.

  98. K-TR7 says:

Sid-i get your point but am saying when nasri and tomas play together in attack looks toothless.anyway rosicky has played 2 games in a week for 60 odd minutes will most probably mean he won’t start.AW has been praising nasri,he expects a significant contribution from him vs porto in cesc’s absence.

  99. K-TR7 says:

I really hope we don’t see shades of psv in 06-07 when we created a million chances and we could’ve been out of sight at halftime, only for alex to score an own goal and score us in the other end from a hleb error.we should concentrate till the final whistle.that elimination hurt comparing we were finalists in the previous season.

  100. rico says:

KTR7, nor the repeat of the game against the Chavs, when Bridge scored in the final few minutes – should never have been…

  101. rico says:

im off guys, catch you tommorrow

    stay safe

  102. K-TR7 says:

Rico-did you really have to dig up that nightmare?you are cruel.thats why sagna will start over eboue since eboue like silvestre and denilson have an error in them.the night in paris and elimination in cl qfs by liverpool after playing so well also hurt alot, please no such heartbreaks again this season!

  103. rico says:

    Sorry KTR7 😦 😦

Def off now, see you all tomorrow, I hope…

  104. Sid says:

there goes all that money spent on therapy.. thank you boys 😛

ktr7 agreed.. i definitely prefer sagna over eboue.. i have no great love for the one part of arsenal that is all teeth 😛 defensively he is much more solid and reliable..

    rosickly definitely wont start..

    anywhoo.. come on you gunners!!!

  105. rico says:
