Another CB?? Forget it..Djourou Will be Arsenals ‘New signing’

Before I start ,I must say that I have no inside information or no ‘sources’ and I’ve heard nothing on the Arsenal grapevine. This is solely my opinion formed on what I’ve experienced as an Arsenal fan by witnessing Wengers transfer market ambition (or lack of) for the last 5 years..

I may be wrong and I hope I am. I really want Wenger to shove a huge slice of humble pie in my face but I dont think he will, nothing over the last 5 years has made me believe the hype that Wenger will  seriously invest in the squad this summer.. Arsenal FC will not sign another CB.

Wenger is not the type to fork out £10million on a first team player, nevermind a backup, so Kos will not be a bench warmer next year.. He’ll be playing and he’ll be playing regularly. This is not the key factor that forms my opinion. The fact that has been blowing smoke up JD’s arse the last couple of days tells me that Kos and JD are our ‘new’ CB’s..

The defender spent almost all of last term on the sidelines with a knee injury but is ready to fill the void left by the departures of William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre.

Says it all really.. If my opinion is correct this leaves us in serious trouble..Kos is a nobody and is nothing like Tommy V was..TV was captain of Ajax and was a regular in the Belgian International team..Kos has never played a big game in his life and Wenger expects him to come in and do the job in the toughest league in the world?? Not a chance..I’m not saying this guy is the next Stepanovs, but I very much doubt he’s the next Tony Adams either..I’d say hes somewhere inbetween and he’s the next Cygan..Is another Cygan really the answer when what we really need is another Keown, Adams, or indeed a younger Sol Campbell..

Can J.D. do a job? He’s big and strong, fast and athletic. He looks like he has the perfect attributes for a top class CB..Saying that I don’t think he’s the answer either. Everytime I’ve seen him play he’s not been very convincing and the fact he’s spent the last year out with injury means there are huge doubts over his fitness and form. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying he wont stay fit, but we all saw what happened to both Dudu and Rosicky after lengthy absences. Dudu was, in the end, sold and Tomas has never regained the form that earned him his nickname when he was younger.

Buy basement bargain unknowns, wait for injured players to return and promote from within has been Wengers philosophy for a while now and I don’t expect it to change. I think Wenger will be happy with TV, JD, Kos, Song, Nordtveit and Bartley and will tell us we are ready.

I don’t for one minute believe Wenger will sign a GK either. He has recently gone on record as saying he doesn’t know his number 1. It’s an honest admittion but it’s nothing we didn’t know already. The GK position has been a serious problem for a few years now and it didn’t change then and I don’t have much faith it will change now. Just because the manager admits he doesn’t know who is number 1 is doesn’t mean hes going to buy one..He’s just accepting the fact he’s got a couple of average ones and a couple of unkowns and he’s expecting (hoping) one of them will step up to the challenge..

For a start Wenger doesnt see the GK position as an important position. Even Bob Wilson said he didn’t see eye to eye with wenger over how the GK was trained. Secondly, Wenger will never in a million years spend big money on a GK. Given was available for a measly £7 mil and Wenger saw it as too much!! Really???? Thirdly, Wenger thinks that spending £2mil on a problem position is the answer. Well Mark Schwarzer is not the answer and we should stop wasting our time chasing players who are no better than what we’ve got already. Thank god we’ve been priced out of a deal by his £4mill price tag. I would normally see being priced out by £4mill as embarrassing, but under the circumstances I think its a blessing in disguise. We need improvements, not another average player to compete with average players..

Wenger will again go with what he’s got, hoping for somebody to do a ‘Flamini’.. If that’s the case then he’ll need about 5-6 of his players to do a ‘Flamini’ becuase we weren’t good enough last year and we won’t be good enough this year if we don’t sign anyone else.

The CM, CB and GK positions have been a problem for the last few years now and have been neglected in every window until the situation has become unbearable. I dont see the situation changing.

If Wenger was out to improve he would have done it by now..

Everyone wants to see improvements, Wenger has promised them year after year with no conviction. What makes it any different this year?

Arsenal are a top side, both foreign and domestically, but they don’t act like one. Arsenal should be at a stage now where the only players that can improve the squad are world class ones. The fact we are still signing players who were playing french league two football only a year ago tells us how big Wengers ambitions really are and how weak the squad is in certain positions.. 3rd place is a trophy and I won’t hold my breath to see any major signings this summer.. I’d even go as far to say we wont be signing anyone else.

Sorry for seeming so negative, but I’ve had enough. I haven’t believed a word Wenger has said for the last few years and I didn’t believe him when he said our team would be sorted before the World Cup or indeed Pre-Season.

Thinking about it, he probably was telling the truth. The team is now sorted. No wonder Cesc wants out..

Cesc will probably leave next season and if the situation doesn’t change at Arsenal then I wouldn’t lose any sleep if Wenger followed him out of the door..

Wenger is a fantastic man. A wonderful innovator and a brilliant accountant, but over the last few years his philosophy on squad building, man management and team tactics has been quite ridiculous and his legacy as being the greatest manager Arsenal has ever had is in serious danger of being tainted and stained.

In trying to take us forwards we are going backwards and it seems everybody barring  Arsene Wenger can see it..

We are The Arsenal. Filling the squad with basement bargains, crocks and kids is the philosophy of Allardyce, Coyle, Mcarthey et al.

In an age where everyone is skint and we are the only ones, barring Citeh and Chelsea, with any money I find it ridiculous that we still aren’t stamping our authority on the transfer market.. I don’t understand how in the same year we can give 17 players new contracts, pay £150 mill off a loan and still announce profits of over £40mil and do absolutely nothing in the transfer window… I don’t get it. What are we waiting for? After the performances of certain players, not just last year but the seasons before, does the manager think they will be any better this year??

Lets hope we see some real activity in the next few days..Otherwise we are in for another season of ‘ fingers and toes crossed lads, lets aim for fourth see how far we get beyond that and hope for the best’, instead of saying ‘we are genuine title challengers, we will be there from start to finish and not fall away at the end like we always do’..

As things stand,I’ll be happy with 4th place this coming campaign…

Is there any chance Wenger might convert/use Kos as a Song backup or Denilsons role ?? Plus a CB ??

  2. Ramer says:

    You are 100% right

  3. Rickard Fransson says:

Spot on! Wenger isn´t the answer for Arsenal Football Club anymore, sad to say it but without any new sharp signings he has to realize that he´s hurting the club.

  4. MARK GOONER says:

    same old story so far

  5. forza forza says:

nah, allow that djourou and verm,we are asking to be relegated with them 2 at the back.

  6. RSD says:

who posted this? the angry of jj but the more to ave you about?

  7. Your analysis of Koscielny was so illogical that I stopped reading when you judged him the “new Cygan”.

  8. dazzer1200 says:

But didn’t Wenger say that ‘we were still short in the defensive department’? Surely that would imply that he was looking to strengthen on what we currently have.

  9. chris66 says:

You may well be right, but we won’t know for 6 weeks until the window closes. Outside of Man City the amount of activity for all clubs has been pathetic. When even Harry Rednapp isn’t buying players in order to get a back hander then you know the market is in trouble!

My guess is that valuations and wages are coming down but it is taking a while for sellers to come to terms with this. It could have happened last year but Real Madrid blew the market up and this year it is city. However once the Blue Mancs have blown their wad for now then valuations will likely fall a lot because there really aren’t many other players in town. Half the clubs are skint and most of the rest of them have players they need to move before they can buy, if not just to get the wages under control. All of the wanna be teams like West Ham, Hull, etc. who were spunking big wages to attract players a few years ago are now looking to get rid of high earners (Bullard, Carlton Cole, Dyer, etc.) but so far there have been no takers.

This window will really go down to the wire I think for everyone, us included. If you can save $5M on the fee and $20K a week for a 5 year contract that is over $10 million total, which can buy you another player in January.

Sorry, I know it is summer but this time it is all about patience.

Crouching Tiger, hidden last minute Transfer offers?
will there be last minute Fire sale at City??

The other day i alluded to the fact that we may have to wait till the last day deadline(and beyond!!) to find out if we have bought anyone.
I’ve been amazed at the rate that City have been snapping up players to add to their 100 man squad! Great if you can afford it except maybe for one important fact.
Isn’t it right this season you can only name 25 players in your 1st team Squad? Sky gave an example ofpossible permutations, consisting of Cities’ current players. Surprisingly they were able to , in theory , to field 2 competitive teams on paper(this didnt even include possible targets ie Milner and Ballotelli.)
Again all very well and good but you can only play 11 at a time.

Players such as Steven Ireland(had his 1st falling out already with Mancini and we were linked with him last season wern’t we?)Michael Johnson( excellent player in my opinion and injury prone too would fit in well at colney!) were not included in either of Cities possible 1st 11’s. Micah Richards is another 1(looks thick as 2 short planks but has Potential at CB/RB and is an Arsenal fan)not to mention Given /Hart?
Everyone know’s City arn’t exactly short of a quid or 2 but business men being business men they are going to want to recoup some money(any money as the deadline looms?) and players will have nagging doubts regarding how much playing time they might get(unless your James milner who doesn’t seem to care according to reports?)

Could it be that Arsene is planing Crouching Tiger, hidden last minute Transfer offer? if not maybe he should??

Akinfeev, all day long but Dutch keeper a much better bet than schwartzer!!!

    what does et al. mean?

  12. oz says:

bartley broken collarbone, i think he will get a gk and cb.not knowing who your no 1 means to me that he doesnt like any of them to be starter.

  13. Arseneal says:

I fear you are absolutely right. Djourou is the new signing and Wenger defended Flapianski at the end of last season saying he will be a world class goalkeep. We also need a DM desperately to help Cesc but Wenger has said we don’t need any more midfielders. Wenger’s so risk averse it’s beyond a joke. No balls or ambition whatsoever in the market.

  14. thundertinygooner says:

Just a teensy weensy bit negative aren’t we.The transfer window has over 5 weeks to go before it closes.Who have Man U,Chelsea or even Spurs bought. Its only the abomination that is Man City who are doing anything and which of their signings would seriously improve our team.I think if Sol agrees another year we won’t get a centre back but your comments about Koscielny are naive and ridiculous. At least credit wenger with some have absolutely no evidence for your Cygan comments and while we had Cygan we were a mighty successful side.We once won the Cup with Luzhny at centre half and once knocked Chelsea out with Luzhny and Stepanovs marking Zola and Jimmy Floyd.
As for the goalkeeping position the fact that we attemopted to sign Schwarzer suggests we are looking for a new keeper.Give Wenger time to get someone in.It was just like this when we let Seaman go and signed Jens Lehmann-he didn’t lose a league game for 15 months.
I’m afraid you’re falling into this trap of believing a tabloid version of football.Money=success =great football.
wenger is on thin ice if things don’t improve and the club lacks ambition but we are nowhere as bad as you suggest.I think we could finoish second this sewasdon.Man U look very suspect to me

  28. Rocks says:

I completely agree with your beliefs that we will not sign another CB or GK. I can also understand the frustration, however the reason we are in the excellent financial situation because of this promotion from within the squad. If wenger thinks they are ready then they probably are. As for the cygan comment, cygan was £2 mil so kos has got to be 5 times better!

  29. SuperMac says:

Hi everyone from a Norway Gooner in Austria..

News from a new day in Austria…
Allready we have sent back Henderson, Landsbury, Eastmond and Traore from this camp.
I spoke too Neil Banfield this evning and he told me that Hend & Land was not far away from full traning. Eastmond was runing 2 days ago, so he should be ok soon. Traore looks not so good. Today AW start with 22 players but end up with 20… Song and Gibbs limp off, but I dont think it is too serious, but none of them played this afternoon. Both was in the gym with Diaby.

This morning AW still separate away the 5 other WC players. He played the Defenders (Verm5, Kos6, JD20, Gibbs, Nordtveit, Frimpong) against the Fowards (Nasri, JW19, Theo, AA23, TR7, JET, Cha29), and use just one goal. Vito was the GK, and he was excellent. All the Def was OK too, and they only cons one goal. A beauty from AA23 (at last!). Nasri create the chance, and AA23 smash it home past Vito. The good news from this morning was Theo assists from his flank. AW set up JET (left) and Theo (right) wide to feed Cha29 and Nasri. Cha29 grab 3 goals and is looking better every day. The bad news was that the next pair, Sagna (right) and Clichy (left) could not give AA23 and Vela – one disent pass!! MOTM this morning was Vito, but cred to Nasri, Cha 29 and all the Def.

This afternoon AW split 20 players in 4 teams, and arr 6 games. The teams:
    Blue: Alm1 – JD20, Clichy – JW19, Theo
White: Szcz – Sagna, Nordtveit – Nasri, Cha29
    Yellow: Vito – Kos6, Frimpong – TR7, JET
    Green: Fabi – Verm5, Eboue – AA23, Vela

    B-G 1-2 (JW19 – Vela 2)
    W-Y 0-3 (Kos6, JET, TR7)
    B-W 1-2 (Clichy – Nordtveit, Sagna)
    Y-G 0-4 (Vela 2, Eboue, Vern5)
    Y-B 2-2 (TR7, JET – JW19 2)
    W-G 1-3 (Nasri – AA23 2, Verm5)

The Green team won all 3 games and Verm5 and Eboue have been exc on this camp, and today Vela did really impress with 4 goals. (he had one more, but ref Pat Rice blow full time when Velas beautyful chip was on his way into the net) AA23 shows again that if it “suits him” he can be magic. JW19 and Nasri again put up a great show, and they look so sharpe.
Also cred to Kos6 and Nordtveit. They will fill the gap from Gallas/Silvestre/Senderos with ease. JD20 need more time but he will give us more power in the box.And cred to all the 4 GK. They feel the competion, and work hard. JET was not so good today. JW19 was exc in last Emirates Cup, and I cant see why this should be his season..
    I hope ….. Bring on Liverpool – please !

  30. JonJon says:

    big girl.. well done dude.

    Say it aint so….please.

  35. oliver says:

hmmmm…certainly long on emotion, not quite convinced about the reason portion. i think it is a bit harsh to dismiss koscielny as a “nobody” – not so widely known outside the ligue 1 perhaps, but hardly a nobody. i was aware of him in 2009, so he certainly was not unknown to mae. if he turns out to be another cygan, so be it – but i don’t think we can write him off just yet.

i too agree we need another cb and gk. and somehow, i think we are looking. the two english ones we have been linked with, cahill and jagielka, have been quoted as available at 30 and 18 million ukp, respectively. at those prices, my response is caveat emptor! those prices do not reflect those players true value: bolton and everton have jacked those valuations way up because they do not want to sell – can we blame arsene for those teams wanting to keep those players? if we pay more than double what the players are really worth, are we doing right by the club? are we so certain that either of these players will turn out to be better than koscielny or djorou? perhaps, but at the prices quoted, should we not be as certain as we can of this before we jump in headlong?

i think we are looking at different options – i may be in the majority, but i cannot see bremen letting per mertesacker go for as little as 10 million ukp. full germany international, vastly experienced. and i imagine that there are other people out there as well we are inquiring about.

look, i think we need cover – perhaps starters – at cb and gk as well. but these things take time – man united took several weeks just to extend a player currently on their books (vidic). man city are offering er, liberal, transfer fees and wages, but still have not gotten that much business done.

i am probably in the distinct minority here – as always – but i just think that identifying targets, submitting bids to clubs (the proper way of doing business), negotiating fees and other details and then doing a whole other set of negotiations with player and player reps are never as easy to accomplish as they seem on paper. i have faith that our club with get business done. just like i think arsene has tried to get more players over the past few years, but was unable to close deals. real life is like that sometimes.

  36. Dave (supporter..not moaner) says:

We have a squad that could win cups right now. We have thirty home trained top youngsters coming through. Wenger spends when he needs to….. LAST BUYS
Maraune Cha – lot of money, wicked buy! good in the air links up well.
Thomas Vermael – lot of money, wicked buy! top defender good in the air, a fighter and a leader plus serious amount of goals 1st season!
Arshavin – lot of money, wicked buy! absolute ****** genius. with our strikers fit, he will be at his best playing off and around them.
Nasri – lot of money, wicked buy! looks seriously sharp already in pre season. Short world class moments last season but didn’t full flow because of injury.
Our new defender, is intelligent, likes a physical game, got some top tackles in during pre season, and has PACE (important for playing a high line)
And finally, the reason for shwarzer is for a joint organizer and good communicator supportive of our three younger goalies – similar to Sol Campbell ( which was another genius buy ) SO WHAT ARE YOU MOANING ABOUT ?especially as you don’t know who we might or might not buy, while wenger has been manager and seriously entertained us with some SERIOUS football and footballers in STYLE. He has a squad that has come to fruition OUT OF THE CLUBS OWN MEANS with a new stadium and half the real estate in the surrounding area, DOH!!! Did Fabs go anywhere? NO!! simple. BLAH BLAH
Big up the twelfth man and the away crowd that’s all we need now, and **** the moaners.

i just have to figure what i can write on. perhaps once the new signings are either made or the window slams shut on us. but i do want to right something.

  41. JonJon says:

    cheers mate. laters..

  42. Donnyfan1 says:

Great report SuperMac. I can feel the balance in your assessment and balance or judgement is the most vital commodity in football. There are far too many hysterical nutters among supporters and balance helps us avoid falling in line with their manic depression. Big inputs from DJ, Vela and TR this year and some from the kiddies (JW Lans Nord)will give us a great boost. Keep up the good work- much appreciated.

  43. JonJon says:

everyone of your comments ive read has practically been a piece and their all good..

dont think about what your gunna write just let it flow mate..

  44. Gareth says:

Sounds like the same stuff most people were saying at the start of last season. “Oh we haven’t signed anybody”/”we need a better goalkeeper”/”we need a real defensive midfielder/centre back”/etc.

Surely you must agree that Wenger does whatever he can to make Arsenal competitive. Do you think he doesn’t want to win trophies? We challenged for most of last season when only a horrendous amount of injuries to first team and squad players rocked our momentum.

Gallas, Van Persie, Djourou, Clichy, Gibbs, Denilson, Fabregas, Eduardo, Arshavin, Song, Bendtner, Nasri, Walcott, Ramsey and Diaby all missed large chunks of last season. Sagna, Eboue, Diaby, Almunia and Fabianski missed small periods too. Just look at the amount of talent in that list! If United or Chelsea had that amount of injuries they wouldn’t have won anything either (United only won the League Cup anyway, heh).

Surely if Wenger thinks his team is good enough then we should trust his opinion. He is one of the most succesful football managers of all time! Just look at his record of honours:

Sorry for the long post but to think he has no idea what he is doing is absolutely ridiculous! I know he’s not superhuman but he surely knows better than some blogger(s) who claim to know what’s best for Arsenal football club?

Sorry again for the long comment. I do actually enjoy reading your blog, I just seem to have gone on a bit of a rant here. Ahh well, come on you Gunners!

  45. SuperMac says:

    Thx Gareth..
AW is the best man Arsenal can get !

  46. JonJon says:

gareth nice to get your response mate..

sure he knows what hes doing..or at least he knew what he was just getting a little worried hes passed his sell by date if you know what i mean..

its the lies i cant stand..and his teams are getting worse not better..the actuall running of the club is going well but thats wengers strong point i feel

id be more than happy to see wenger move upstairs and help look after the club and a new coach be brought in to run the team and football side of things..

  47. Gareth says:

I think Wenger ruled out ever moving upstairs (at least at Arsenal) a few years back as he would be too inclined to interfere with the management of the club.

Obviously he is not getting any younger but then people were saying Alex Ferguson was “past it” during United’s barren run (2003-2007 almost as long as our current one). Hopefully you’re wrong and we can replicate some of our past glory. Nothing would give me (and you I’m sure) more joy that seeing Wenger lift the Premier League trophy again.

Besides, there are still six weeks left before the transfer window shuts, hopefully we will see a couple of new players before then when the market gets going properly.

  48. JonJon says:

gareth i do hope im wrong..its just a case of me not building my hopes up and expecting the worst..just in case..

this exact same situation happened in 08 when we lost our entire midfield almost and didnt do anything and we suffered the next season and only just made it..

now weve lost an entire defence and wengers not getting busy…its de ja vu..

I luv wenger, I want 2 keep that much record of honour too.
I think wenger truly knws what he’s doing, if he didnt he would not be Arsenal’s coach.

  50. PTangYangKipperBang says:

Poor article. There is a lot wrong in there and a lot of assumptions, which are negative. I mean, writing off the new lad as a “Cygan”. He aint kicked a ball hardly and was the best defender in France last year. Wenger is a twat for not buying anybody; with 5 weeks left in the window? Do me a favour. There are so many brilliant players around the world these days. The world has advanced and countries like Ecuador, Chile and ones in Africa, Russia etc produce good footballers. They are also accessible now. It is stupid to buy players that everybody else rates and are therefore very expensive. Its like “We don’t want some 6’3” striker from Congo with an amazing first touch and blistering pace. No we want someone who is in the “Trumps” set who costs £50 mill and can shut people up down the pub.” It frightens and horrifies me to see people trying to start websites and facebook pages etc to try and interfere with the running of Arsenal. Don’t you people realise what damage you could do? Not that you will be able to. I suggest that yous have a good think about it and then go and dust off your old Supporters Hat; and grow up.

  51. JonJon says:

take your head out of the sand mate and grow some balls..

  52. PTangYangKipperBang says:

I got the cojones brother. It is folk like you who have no bollocks. No staying power. Feinthearts who have grown impatient and aggressive. Who “Just want to win something”. At any price. I know what the crack is you see Chavs and Mancs, even Spuds and Citeh heads puffing their chests out. Arrogant displays and jibes from them upset and hurt you because you can’t think of a decent reply. Thats because you. and a growing number of fools like you, don’t feel proud of our beloved club like you should do. Therefore you do not defend it and look sadly into your pint. Do some serious thinkin mate, really.

  53. JonJon says:

mate its folks like you who let the club bend u over and screw you..just a yes man to the machine..brainwashed by the clubs totalitarian approach in running a football club..

Arsenal FC was a club well known for being a family club..a club that had a close relationship with its they dont give a toss about us its all about the money..

its the fools like you who let the club think they can do what the fuck they want..

no ambition,no self respect,no morales or opinions, no balls..

  54. gun1 says:

i would realy love to see what happens to they kids when we get a new manager? wenger has lost it along time ago. the best singing we can have is a new manager who realy wants to win.

  55. gun1 says:

wenger is a c**t hes a big time lie. hes looking now and when the window closes he wel say i have got great belive in the team i got judge me in may na make that auguest now. what a clown of frog he is a loser just like the france team.

  56. gun1 says:

someone make wenger watch the barcelona again

  57. PTangYangKipperBang says:

The club can do “What the fuck they want” and always have done. Bloody good job too. You must see the differing opinions amongst the fanbase. You can not have a militant, and in your case minority, section of the fans having control of what happens inside the club. Getting people sacked etc. Luckily, there are amazing people in control at Arsenal, especially Wenger. If you were to remove him now it would not only be a travesty against our most successful manager, but also very damaging. Our team is developing into a real team. Not a collection of individuals but an exciting team. We have been close in recent seasons. Don’t believe the hype that we haven’t. Keep the faith. Victoria Concordia Crescit.

  58. esq arsenal says:

i agree with every word of this artical. Arsenal are a big club,a graet club, a club that should and could be winning trophy’s every three years minimum! like evey big club we have world class homegrown youngsters however unlike every big club AW lacks the courage or maybe common sence to spend what it takes to secure the services of the experianced world class players to complete the world clas jigsaw, which will obviously result in a world class club side that WILL WIN TITLES!. How ever our current situation “a big club that acts like a small club every transfer window bar none” will obviously result in big players who are not blind, realising that they will spend there next 5 years playing along side dead weight winning nothing and ultimatly want to move and play alongside winners and this will happen over and over again until we do what evers necessary to WIN WIN and if that means spending then why not spend

  59. adebayour says:

you guys are all a bunch of blind bafoons. get a life and open your eyes and your notice the quality of the players we have in our team and that we are the only well run team. why do u want splash the money when u dont have to. chelsea has indeed spoilt the lot of you

  60. gun1 says:

yea mate it must off bein very exciting when chelsea man u and barcelona did us? it must be exciting 5 years with 0 to show for.

  61. JonJon says:

they cant do what they want though mate..without the fans the club is nothing and if they dont start appreciating the fans and putting the fans money back into the team they’ll be serious problems..

i never said i wanted wenger prefer if he just moved aside and go upstairs or something and let a hungrier manager take over..

  62. JonJon says:

we do need to splash the cash though mate..we arent good enough

  63. PTangYangKipperBang says:

I would like to remind you that Wenger made the best signings in 2 of the last 3 windows – Arshavin and Vermaelen. Yes, Wenger could’ve invested in the team in a more immediate way i.e spending big money but the money was instead put into “The Club”. Roughly a third of our large debt needed to build our lovely new stadium was paid off; in 1 year. That is mega and you need to look beyond the immediate present or recent past. For me, that is appreciating the fans; by looking after it properly and guiding it through this transition from an old, historic club to a modern football power. It is also a club that is dignified. Which promotes the true values of football and sportsmanship. We try to always play football the right way and conduct our dealings with others likewise. We promote the development of youth and proper team play. We always attack. We are the team everyone wants to watch because we are beautiful. Above all we are The Arsenal. Bless Arsenal. I believe that you feel you are right and care about the club but I hope that you never get your wish.

  64. Malvern Dan says:

    Alright mate,

I am sorry you have lost faith. Personally I feel that things are going fairly well. We had a striker crisis last season, in comes Chamakh. We’ve got in a replacement for Silvestre (who would never have got near the team if Djourou was fit), who has to be better than that fathead! Wenger has recently repeated that he is looking for a new CB, this would make sense, as Gallas has left. Nordveit could also be an option which won’t please everybody, but he seems promising and we either start trusting him or sell him. I don’t see a ‘third way’ with him in that respect.

As for the GK situation, this is more difficult to judge. I believe that Wenger is planning for Szczesny to be the man for us. Maybe he’s right, maybe not. But this could explain why we’ve been linked with Schwarzer et al. – only a short term option to rival Szczesny for one or two seasons could possibly work without affecting dressing room morale (remember Jens and Manuel?).

So what are we missing? Possibly another defender and an experienced goalkeeper. We still have some 6 weeks or so. We also have been late movers in transfer windows after the last 5 or so years. So from your experience, you should know we are the sort of team to buy late to save money.

A previous commenter noted how this window is likely to be distinguished by the dearth of money available to teams, which has certainly been the case -excluding the Citeh’s of this world of course.

I would implore you to reconsider your stance, there is still time. After the window shuts we will have a much better picture, perhaps a better time to comment on the state of our squad, with all the baggage which it entails.

Thanks for publishing your thoughts, I understand where you are coming from. Only I feel it is a tad hasty.

  65. Malvern Dan says:

Also, just thought of another reason not to lose faith for a blogger – you might end up all bitter and twisted – like ANR buffoon Myles Palmer

  66. JonJon says:

thanks for your comment malvern dan..

dont you find it uneccessary though why we wait until the last minute..we lost alonso that way..

anyhow , wenger said the squad would be in place by now..

and why do we have to wait until citeh spend all their money..we must have our own targets they cant sign everyone..

be interested to hear any feedback you may have..

  67. gun1 says:

We had a striker crisis last season, in comes Chamakh? did u for get to say out goes dudu and im sure vp wel be out again so we are left with that big mouth bent52 and chamakh now we realy got a chance off winning nothing again.

  68. Malvern Dan says:

    Cheers JonJon,

Well I’m with you on that one, it was agonising watching all the SSN & newsnow updates to see whether Arshavin would sign in time and one wait many fans could’ve done without. Who knows how much we saved by waiting, but I think its worth remembering Zenit wanted something like 25m from Spurs after the Euros.

Hopefully, sooner rather than later, Ashburton Grove will be able to provide the sort of money to do that. We have got over the last hurdle of debt with that recent payment you mentioned in your article and I hope that it is these debts, rather than something else (like an overly conservative manager) which is preventing us from being able to compete better in the transfer market.

I do remember Wenger saying about how he was expecting to do most if not all of his business early in the window, but maybe he has tried to. Just looking at some of our recent signings, there is something of a theme of them just dragging on before finally being nailed. I think City are just making it harder for us to negotiate, when they finish their business it will weaken the selling clubs position. If they want to sell they will accept below what they were hoping for.

Maybe Wenger is just hardballing too much, I don’t doubt he drives a hard bargain, something Bourdeux Chairman Triaud would certainly admit! Jokes aside, I feel that this ability to get bargains has kept us where we are during the stadium project; I think maybe the debt hurt us more than the club let on and sadly Wenger has been left out to dry somewhat.

The only good things you could say of that is that it shows his dedication, and also it makes a mockery of Spurs managing to get their stadium off the ground whilst they have Harry ‘Del Boy’ Redknapp in charge.

  69. Gunnermandude says:

FORGET DJOUROU… Your “New Signing ” CB is SONG.

He’s gonna leave DM to Denilson. Don’t you know Wenger by now? thought you had him aaalll figured out. Thank God we’re not running the market circus like Man City do their business… now they have to OFFLOAD!!

PRICES ARE INFLATED… The player price bubble is going to POP and Wenger is LIGHTYEARS ahead of YOU.

In Arsene (Phd) we trust. (and you have a degree in what??!)

  70. noormansah says:

According to me, The one of AW’s weakness is he can not train aspect of mentality over his squad. remember, Arsenal’s weakness, nervous to do big games or feel of inferior over top club, examples :match to big club chelsea, MU, barca, city (now) juventus, real madrid etc. Players formerly like henry, denny, vera, petit, anelka don,t like that. Solution, dont’t use alumunium, flapski, buy new keeper ( joe hart or else). with average defender and goal We have not any trophy in new season. attention : mentality must remove.

  71. TA6 says:

GALLAS – great player but an increasing distruption
SENDEROS – not good enough, but a strong heart
    SILVESTRE – nuff said
CAMPBELL – I would extend his contract just for that bit of experience

As we stand we go into the season with
    VERMAILEN – nuff said
DJOUROU – has a touch of class hope he steps up
KOCIELNY – can’t believe you are comparing him to Stepanov or Cygan, very ignorant, unfounded and when I switched off.
NORTVEIT – had a full and busy season in the Bundeslige, looks a great prospect
SONG – cb is his and Wenger’s prefered position

Not a bad bunch and I believe an imrovement over last year so when I saw the headline about JD being our new CB I thought here we have a bit of sense, but it turns out to be a negative.
I am dumbstruck by the blogs of late, we’ve not even kicked a ball yet and you’re complaining already.
Unless we are signin genuine first teamers there is little point buying just to appease fans that are disgruntled already.
A goalkeeper is a must, I think Wenger stating we don’t have a number one, is not a call for an existing keeper to step up but more that it is a position that will be addressed.
If a truly world class DM is out there that is the only other position that needs filling.

  76. RH says:

Good article, the Wenger Knows brigade don’t like it, but then how dare you shatter their delusion that we are going to win the league!

AW will not buy anyone of note now. He likes new signings to be completed early in the summer so they they can have a proper pre season. Yes he got Gallas late in the window but that was down to Cole leaving.

100% correct – Wenger doesn’t spend all of 10m on backup – Koswho is Gallas’s replacement. Now Sol is not coming I think Nordveit we will promoted to our 4th CB – he’ll do nothing about the GK situation, we’ll have spent 8.5m did you say and got 6m for Dudu – net transfer spending of 2.5m.

‘I can now compete with Chelsea in the transfer market’ (AW – April 2010.)

  77. JonJon says:

if our net spend is 2.5 mil there will be serious questions to be asked of wenger and where exactley he is taking this club..

  78. mandla says:

this man is so sturbon like a donkey,i dont see him signing a quality defender.he is good at bringing rejects from the french league.we dont have good back up.if 3get injured we will be facing the same situation like 5seasons ago.he is got money but he is reluctant to use it.what the hell was he doing at the world cup? we dont have a good goal keeper now it mark from fulham, this man cant take 2million he is so damn stingy.if he doesnt win anything FIRE THE IDIOT.
we have lost the league the same way every year coz of his stingyness.djouro is enjury prone like rvp.
this man isnt seroius any more find a replacement.

  79. PTangYangKipperBang says:

Jeez there are so many tossers masquerading as Arsenal fans on this site. Insulting, moronic crap like “idiot” and “senile” and “greedy bastard”. All of you saying this sort of stuff about a man of integrity and dignity, who has given you the most glorious period in our history, are wankers. I do not consider you true Arsenal fans. You are (as my old man would say) “Daft as arseholes and twice as nasty”.

  80. JonJon says:

yeah i agree with that kipper bang..

less of the insults guys..wenger is a god for what hes done and even though his star seems to be fading he deserves more respect than name calling and insults..

  81. PTangYangKipperBang says:

Nice 1 JJ. I just can’t believe how nasty some of these dudes are.

  82. avenell says:

Morning roadsters.. sorry to everyone caught up in moderation..

    Mandla.. French rejects???

    Sagna, Clichy, Diaby???

You have lost me. The rejects are the 3rd choice CB’s like Silvestre.

Kipper…. We normally run the site with a bit more respect to Mr Wenger OBE. But it interesting to hear the radical views about him from some so called supporters.

  83. JonJon says:

i dont really agree with the names and never have..

my posts my seem negative from time to time but you’ll never see me call the manager anything..

    other than a liar 😉

  84. JonJon says:

    hey ave you ok mate..

  85. avenell says:

Not too bad JJ.. No work today?

  86. avenell says:

Your post was a tad pm for me, but a good one.

  87. PTangYangKipperBang says:

Radical views are 1 thing. Nasty, personal insults are another. It seems that a lot of Gooners have become twisted and turned into demons. They believe the hype in the media that short term success is all. They don’t seem to care that we are setting ourselves up for the future having just relocated. The spite with which people talk about our most successful manager (EVER!) disgusts me. The man seriously cares about Arsenal and works incredibly hard to achieve success. Didn’t Fergie go 5 years without winning anything at Man U when he started? Didn’t Barca go 6 years without a single trophy just before their recent massive success? Their fans were doing the same thing. “We don’t believe in your youth project anymore, you must buy players to compete with Real.” In Wenger I Trust.

  88. JonJon says:

no not today mate i got stuff to do today..

kipper bang i can read anyones posts and rate them highly..there has been some amazing comments on last night and today that dont agree with my post but they were inciteful..

im not always so negative, i just type what im feeling at the time..its a release..

i tend to not read too much into the wengers an @&%$£”!*****^&&& type of post..

i prefer good feedback..see super macs post earlier..quite amazing

Some are provocative and use the same subject matter to rile posters up.
Some are so friendly they are quite patronizing super dooper..
Some are a just a free for all.
I never call Anyone at arsenal names .. well apart from denilson and theo.. 😉 not bad ones though..

I kinda like us to be somewhere in the middle.

    morning all…anyone about?

  91. agirlagunner says:

Hola, JJ. I’m not a happy bunny over our transfer activities either. Which genuine Arsenal fan is? But I live in hope and we have six weeks to go yet. 🙂

GK and CB should be priorities. Then a solid cover for Song. Is there any chance at all that D&D would go?

    Hello, Ave, oliver. 🙂

  92. oliver says:

    morning agag…

  93. agirlagunner says:

Bonjour, monsieur! Another soporific day on the transfer market. Snore snore zzz.

  94. oliver says:

yah, not much going on it seems….more about this keeper, that keeper, sol having a medical up at the barcodes, etc…wake me up when something actually happens.

  95. DeiseGooner says:

    Hi all.
Havent read the posts yet so this may be already on here

  96. JonJon says:

hey guys had to nip out for an hour..

so sol the whore has got a move to newcastle..

    mascherano up for sale..

  97. DeiseGooner says:

    its bullshit though…so calm down

  98. JonJon says:

    interesting DG

but to me that doesnt even look like a pub in england..never mind a pub in london..

  99. agirlagunner says:

DG, I don’t care if that photo has been manipulated. Brought a smile to my face. 🙂 Mertesacker seems slow and lethargic though… Do we really need him

    Hey, JJ 🙂

  100. DeiseGooner says:

it was taken last year in Bremen, Pers local!!

  101. agirlagunner says:

    Hahaha. 🙂 Excitable selves, easy…

  102. JonJon says:

mertezackers pace is his only disadvantage but id take him over kos…at least hes a stalwart in the german side and they aint no push overs..

    hey AGAG

  103. agirlagunner says:

Mertesacker was caught out of position a fair few times at the WC… But at least, he has experience with high-pressure matches.

He’ll struggle to deal with a quick attacker though.

  104. JonJon says:

    i know AGAG..

but if he can organise his defence and he has the pace of sagna, clichy and tv playing with him he’d do ok..

tony and martin werent execptionally fast..but they could defend..thats all you need to do..

senderos was in the same mould..but his pace wouldnt have really mattered if he wouldnt of been so much of a jesse and gone to pieces in the big matches

pace, skill, it all goes out of the window when you come up against a team thats organised..

all i want is an experienced proven quality CB whos played at the very top level and can sort his defence out..

i think mertezacker can do that..and while we are taking germans id get lahm as well..and schweinstieger..and ozil.. 😉

we need someone we know is going to be as good as gallas was..

ok he was a bit disruptive but he was quality and had an amazing year last year…

i understand the reasons why we let him go and im not debating that..but he NEEDS replacing..

some uncapped kid from france doesnt do it for me..we need more than that and we deserve more than that i just hope wenger does it..

  105. agirlagunner says:

Senderos is a cautionary tale… Not only was he not quick, JJ, he was an absolute bag of nerves in high-pressure situations and could hardly impose himself.

Well, Mertesacker is tall but would need to beef up to be able to handle the likes of Drogba. Lahm was excellent all around at the WC. If we could get any of Ozil, VDW, Affelay/Elia, we would be awesome. Alas… we have a coach who’s not interested in spending, it seems…

  106. JonJon says:

    wenger wont change my dear..

the only reason everyones getting excited this summer is cos everyone knew how badly we were at the end of last season and how certain players were absolutely diabolical..they actually believe wenger saw it too and will spend..

he wont..he hasnt in years..we’ll go into this season with a worse team than last and at the end of last season we won 2 games in 10 or something..if we continue with those players we are going to suffer..

  107. JonJon says:

the senderos tale is why i cant understand why we’ve taken a massive risk..

gallas was a big game player..kos could turn out to be great but at the minute weve just bought another player who has never played a big game for a team that struggles in big games…at the same time losing a player who was good in big games

senderos was released because he couldnt hack it and weve relaced gallas with a guy whos never done it..

and if hes only a backup then why was he prioritised over the other cb we are supposed to be signing?? surely when you have a list of targets you go for the ones you need the most and than get you backus with what you have left..

    nobody else is coming

  108. avenell says:

    Anyone watching the game?

  109. JonJon says:

    JD injured 😦

  110. avenell says:

Were even going to struggle to win the Emirates cup at this rate.

  111. JonJon says:

mate were going to be in trouble if wenger doesnt pull his finger out

no improvements on last year if anything we are worse off and age will not change things..

the same shit players will be just as shit just a few months older

  112. JonJon says:

ATV are silly..JD goes off injured and at half time they show an interview from a few days ago with him saying he is fit and raring to go..

    who runs this show??

  113. avenell says:

    lol… I missed that..

  114. JonJon says:

was just on then mate.. i was laughing

  115. avenell says:

On the radio this morning they said that the mighty Spuds were after the Olympic stadium.. As west ham want it too an Arsenal fan phoned in and suggested they ground share..
    That would be funny.. 😉

  116. avenell says:

    West Ham and East Totnum..

  117. avenell says:

I was just looking at how small the ground was we are playing at tonight.. (that’s what reminded me) Wha are this mob they must be a right small club?

  118. Breezy says:

    Hey everyone

First up I don’t agree with everything JJ said, but i do think that certain area need attention, in fact they are the same areas which have needed attention the few seasons. First- Goalkeeper, we should have bought a keeper immediately after Jens went off the rails, Almunia to me was always a backup keeper, in the mould of United’s van der Gouw remember him!!!, but we never did, and I for believe we could have won the league had we had a decent keeper. i also think that the defence leaking so many goals is down to a lack of confidence in the guy behind them, it almost as if they feel one mistake and its a goal, therefore, everyones on edge. At CB we need more reinforcements, last season our injuries mounted up and we were found wanting, and whos knows for sure that this GPS thing will work

i would’nt mind someone who could fill both the CB and DM slots, somelike Maqueaz, but since we’re not talking the Barcelona thats going to be difficult.

  119. avenell says:

Hi Breezy.. what about Kompany he would be cheap in the boot sale?.

  120. JonJon says:

ave they are the equivilent of barnet or someone like that..

thats the reason we look so good but to be honest our lads look big lads compared to theirs..theyve all been in the gym..

  121. avenell says:

Or this GPS system has pecs and delts built in..

  122. JonJon says:

hi breezy..thanks for the reasoned comment….

i think we need a specialist in the CB is our dual role man.

ive been mulling over the jagielka transfer and hes a dual role man too..

id like someone like a terry or a carvalho or a vidic who specialises in the cb role..

i think weve got too many players who are a jack of all trades but a master of none and i wouldnt mind someone who can only play one role but is brilliant at it..

  123. JonJon says:

lol yeah they all look massive cos theyve got a gps suit on underneath..

  124. JonJon says:

ive got another post ave im going to bang it up tonight again if thats ok..?? not too late about half nine..

i wont be around tomorrow as im back at work but this post was more of a trial run and i enjoyed being around for the like to do it again..

im never around through the day and by the time i come online everyones gone..

i propose an avenall rd evening shift ;)just for me..

  125. waas like watching paint dry

  126. JonJon says:

    hey RSD

  127. you had a few friends last night

  128. are we allowed to rate player in pre season

  129. JonJon says:

just a few..some good comments brought a lot of idiots out of the woodwork but in the main they were good responses

  130. JonJon says:

    rate away

  131. mixed bag from kos

  132. JonJon says:

did u really expect tony adams?

  133. we still look doggy a set pieces but thats silly to think for a preseason game

  134. Breezy says:

I don’t mind the post being put up at night a long as i can comment on it the next day !!!. here in SA your 9pm is 11pm, which means bed time for worrk the next day.

JJ I see your point, but think our vidic, cavaliho etc is kos or Djourou and we all know how Wenger loves a versatile player!!

  135. guess we can only take really is 90 mins for some and a few have beefed up

  136. avenell says:

Around 7pm is about ideal for me jonjon.. but 9.30 is okay.
I just have too much to do to get on in the day..

    Breezy…. Your welcome anytime..

    hi RSD.. hows your blog?

  137. JonJon says:

breezy i think JD can play CM too..

versatile players are good cos they can play wherever you need them but the problem with too many versatile players is for every song you get an eboue and id rather the squad be more top heavy with specialists if im honest..

in my opinion the versitile players are the ones you use when numbers are running low..

  138. JonJon says:

do we know when ricos back.

i can hold fire with the post and bang it up tomorrow if you want.. 😉

  139. avenell says:

Nah stick it on jonjon.. if rico wants to put one on in the morning she still can.. (if you are okay with that)

I not sure when she’s back, I’m thought she said a few days..

  140. JonJon says:

    yeah thats fine mate..
