Are strikers a dying breed??

Just a quick post today to give food for thought as there’s not much news around…..

In the football world as we know it today, is the role of striker becoming a bit of a lesser need?

Our goal scorers last season were, Cesc Fabregas, top scorer with 19 goals, Arshavin and Bendtner were equal second with 12 goals, then came Robin with 10, Vermaelen with 8 and Diaby with 7. The rest were shared around and from all different positions.

Look how many goals Lampard and Gerrard score from midfield for their clubs season after season..

Rooney, Drogba and Torres are the players who come to mind when thinking about big strikers in the Premiership who score regularly and then there is Darren Bent, Carlton Cole and Kenwyne Jones – but what other prolific strikers are there in the league?

So how important is the role of the big number 9 , especially with the style of football we play – our biggest striker is played on the right of a front three so it looks as Arsene Wenger doesn’t think its ‘that’ important. I know we have just got Chamakh but I think that’s just a precaution because of an out of form Eduardo and a fragile Robin van Persie…

What do you all think? Are strikers a dying breed with the attacking midfielder or is there still a place for an out and out goalscorer if so where are they??

Hi all, sorry its a short one, busy day but just wanted to refresh the page…

    Food for thought though…

  2. Red Arse says:

    Hi Rico,

What time do you call this?

    Smacked bottie time! πŸ™‚

Certainly food for thought Rico, but in Arsenal’s case it is probably more a case of having a crap striker(s).

  3. rico says:

Hi RA, I know its late, but better late than never eh πŸ˜‰ Hectic old time for me the last few days… 😦

Anyway, yes, since Henry its gone downhill a tad, thought Eduardo was going to make a huge difference, maybe he would have be it not for that thug Taylor…!!

  4. Jay-Jay says:

    It’s a good point.

Modern football these days seems to put more focus on the attacking midfielder/winger type like Messi or Ronaldo.

I think the out-and-out striker is a thing of the past, and especially the old-style two up front.

Look how poorly England’s performances were using that tactic.

  5. rico says:

    Jay-Jay,

spot-on.. England don’t have an attacking midfielder with their kind of quality, maybe thats why Fabio can’t play that way…

    We have plenty though πŸ˜‰

  6. Suhail.TV says:

Afternoon Rico, and all.. Bit late today πŸ˜‰

  7. Red Arse says:

    Rico,

Arsene led the Premier League in playing 4:5:1, Henry spear heading the attack with a huge number of goals coming from Robert Pires, Freddie Lungberg and so on.

The attacking midfield players still contribute plenty of goals for us, but I still think a class CF, hopefully Chamahk, is essential.

Try as he might Bendy is not there yet, but that has put more pressure on others to score.

    Interesting!

  8. Suhail.TV says:

The world cup emphasizes the importance of a sharp shooter in the team.. villa/forlan/higuain/klose/mueller.. so..so..

  9. rico says:

Sorry guys, gotta pop out for an hour now, dentist
    😦 😦

  10. W.A.T.H says:

    Nice post Rico………….

Brings up many permutations and formations but the problem is with a CF he also needs good supplies from the wings yet most players who play as wingers these days wanna cut in and score themselves….!!

  11. Suhail.TV says:

Hello Wath.. Can Villa beat germs today.?. Hope you are fine..

  12. W.A.T.H says:

STV I am good mate hope ur well…. Spain can beat em but they better play alot better than what they have been or the krauts will go through me thinks…! what you reckon..?

  13. Suhail.TV says:

    All well here too dude

Me too thing the octopus is wrong this time.. I fancy a 78 rematch and a dutch revenge.. That would be a perfect end for tournament.

  14. Suhail.TV says:

    74 it is

  15. agirlagunner says:

Hola, rico! Good post. We don’t play a big No. 9 just cause we don’t have that big No.9. RvP would be all sorts of amazing, but he’s never fit long enough to fulfill his promise. Having said that, we have quite a number of players who can score. Unfortunately, our defense and keepers concede more than a fair few too.

    Hello, all. πŸ™‚

  16. Barndoor Bendtner says:

Had to re-read the title. I thought it said “Are strikers a diving breed?” lol

  17. Jay-Jay says:

    They’re certainly a diving breed.

Look no further than Fernando Torres against Chile – that was truly brilliant…

  18. agirlagunner says:

    STV @ 2:41, good point!

    Hello, RA, Γ§a va?

    Boo, WATH! How are you?

  19. agirlagunner says:

    Jay-Jay, easy on Liverpool No. 9… πŸ˜‰

  20. Blood Sport says:

i think a lot of the time whether or not a good old fashioned number 9 is needed is dependent on the team in front of you. Sure if you have the players you can pass and move around them but sometimes you need a player who can also compete in the air and just bully the ball into the back of the net.

  21. Suhail.TV says:

..and what about Capdevil’s jay jay??

  22. W.A.T.H says:

Hi AGAG how’s you gorgeous..? All ok i hope

  23. agirlagunner says:

Same old, same old… Still gorgeous, WATH. πŸ˜‰ So are you wathcing the finals? I’m envious!

  24. K-TR7 says:

Afternoon all.tasty topic rico but id probably need a post to elaborate why the number nine is a dying breed…

  25. Red Arse says:

    Hi Guys and Keepers

Agag, je vais tres bien, merci, et vous? Ca va?

How can you say we don’t have a big CF with wonderful Bendy at our disposal. Oh, I remember he has strained his groin and will be out until Jan 2011, you are right. 😦

  26. kc says:

The Netherlands proves your point here. They hardly work the ball up to their strikers at all unless its a cross in. Sneijder takes most of the shots, and why not. Robben is their main attacking option and Kuyt gets in the action a lot. Poor Van P had to look for scraps yesterday.

  27. W.A.T.H says:

Yes AGAG I’ll try wangle my way in on sunday…..! i’ll be the oldest ball boy there πŸ˜‰

  28. Suhail.TV says:

One of the main reason for not having a big CF9 is..

When Wenger searches for that.., he sees Bendtner training..!!

  29. Red Arse says:

    Wath,

Try JJ’s outfit, pink tutu, pink vuvuzela, matching boots.

Even if you don’t get in your bound to score! Note the footballing analogy! πŸ˜‰

  30. agirlagunner says:

RA, comme Γ§i comme Γ§a. πŸ™‚ I quite like Bendy but he has mucht to improve.

WATH, lol. That would be a sight! If the Catalans win over the Germs tonight, and I wouldn’t bet against it, since they dive, dive, dive and would probably con the ref into awarding a pen, make sure you throw in a beach ball to confuse Casillas. You’d be our hero!

Hola, KT, you could always write about it… πŸ™‚

kc, to be fair to Robin, he didn’t get great service; and Robben/Sneijder did not have the final ball for his killer feeds. πŸ™‚

  31. W.A.T.H says:

RA gonna bring you back a pink vuvuzela with spangles on just for your “boys” nite out at the pink banana…..

  32. Suhail.TV says:

Agag.. How was VDV’s play last night ??

  33. rico says:

Afternoon peoples, sorry i dashed out, back now and still have all my teeth, what a nice dentist πŸ™‚

  34. f me rico the classic #9 died before even you started watching football in the 60’s.

  35. agirlagunner says:

STV, the Dutch were much more attacking when he came on! he had a couple of neat exchanges with Robin…

  36. W.A.T.H says:

AGAG I’m ur hero anyway I kno that lol πŸ˜‰

Watch Casillas get blowdarted from the crowd…. it’ll be me… oh and one each 4 xavi and pique the little wankers…!

  37. rico says:

nah rsd, i remember big Malc πŸ™‚

  38. Suhail.TV says:

Hello Rico.. welcome back.. think the teeth are well repaired πŸ˜‰

  39. W.A.T.H says:

No gummy bear impressions Rico πŸ™‚

  40. blowdart wath bit sutble for you

thought you’d be more a pigs head.

  41. Red Arse says:

    Hi Rico, oh toothed one.

Did you see that Spanish TV reported that Barca were unable to pay their players at the end of June? You can’t help but smile. What plonkers! πŸ™‚

Wath, I’ve already got one. The guys prefer me doing a table dance wearing my froufrou though. Mmmmm! πŸ˜‰

  42. agirlagunner says:

rico, you’re back, glad I caught you! I was about to say bye.

    Hello, rsd.

  43. wouldn’t matter they’ld they will be lent the money by Bank Catalonia Corruptados at 0.00000000001% interest from state funds which will never be repaid or noticed by platini and they will be given more to get cesc who they will buy registered as farm equipment to avoid vat and before anyone laughs this is exactly how they bought johann cruyff

  44. Red Arse says:

    Agag,

I know I have asked you before, but where do you get your “c circumflex” from? (I think I made that up. It’s the little piggy tail under the “c”). πŸ™‚

  45. soz hi all am back as season is starting. no big un’s this summer from fishing

  46. rico says:

Oi Oi, i still have all my own πŸ™‚

Poor old Cescy boy, seems he may have to stay put then πŸ˜‰

How are we all this fine day, cant wait to see the germans tear the stains apart…

  47. Suhail.TV says:

Hello rsd seeing after a long time..

Agag he and RVP has a good understanding unlike others..

  48. agirlagunner says:

AGAG rolls eyes at WATH re: first sentence. Ha.

But loooves the imagery evoked by the second statement. The Catalans keeling over from poisoned darts is what sweet dreams are made of. You get a check mark for the brill idea.

RA, are you into… cosplay? πŸ˜›

  49. Red Arse says:

    Teeth? Rico,

We can all say we have our own, but I found someone else’s in my bum the other day! Older women you know!! πŸ˜‰

Bet you can’t beat that. Or should I say bi …. (no, no,….control yourself).

  50. did you see we sign two defenders today?

  51. Red Arse says:

    Agag,

Never heard of it, but if you are game, so am I! πŸ˜‰

  52. W.A.T.H says:

    RSD………….. Subtle when needed…

  53. Red Arse says:

    Hi Suhail, RSD,

RSD, we have been reported to have signed or are about to sign players everyday for the last week! No chance. πŸ™‚

  54. Red Arse says:

    El Rico,

Are you there? Or just up to mischief? πŸ˜‰

  55. kos is already train for f sake and the other guy is on the offical website http://bit.ly/c04Cbf

  56. rico says:

you watching tonight agag?? or getting some rest, if you have already gone, nighty night…

  57. rico says:

    two rsd???

  58. Suhail.TV says:

True RA, We’ve signed chamakh 983 times..!!

  59. if you bored and want a laugh blogging at it’s ultimate best http://bit.ly/bbheZy

  60. Red Arse says:

    Oh sorry RSD,

I thought you asked if we saw that we had signed two defenders today.

I did not realise you said trained with F Sake. Never heard of F Sake, I’m afraid.

Of course, if you were swearing at me I might take offence, and you would not want that! 😦

  61. W.A.T.H says:

Rico……….. AGAG asleep already dont be daft and besides she not said goodnight to me yet either πŸ˜‰

Dago’s getting venomous blowdart in their behides to die a slow and painful death…..! Hmmm nice…! especially 3/4 that come to mind.

  62. agirlagunner says:

RA, I think a circumflex is associated with vowels, as in “bΓͺte”. I think you mean a cedillo e.g., “garΓ§on”.

Or I could be making it up; I haven’t studied French in aaaages. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I used MS Word, btw.

  63. Red Arse says:

I never send her to sleep Wath! πŸ˜‰

Rico, have you checked your emails lately?

  64. soz you know im to illiterate for newsnow.

f sake have you got his youtube compilation

  65. Suhail.TV says:

RA wenger Birmingham post match i/v ..lol

  66. Red Arse says:

    Agag,

Cedillo is the male “c”, cedilla is the female “c”, do you see?

Piggy tale is more fun though! πŸ™‚

  67. rico says:

:: WATH, can’t imagine to sending anyone to sleep πŸ˜‰

  68. Red Arse says:

    Suhail, RSD,

Yes, thanks, both me and F Sake think it’s great!

  69. Suhail.TV says:

    Rico R U there..

  70. rico says:

    yes πŸ™‚

  71. rico says:

RA, just checking emails now πŸ˜‰

  72. Suhail.TV says:

Ya.. you know, some offensive comments making this blog less enjoyable.. 😦

  73. Suhail.TV says:

    re Y day

  74. Red Arse says:

    Suhail,

I hope you are not cross with me. Did not mean to be offensive! 😦

  75. rico says:

    STV, whats up??

  76. Suhail.TV says:

    Never dear RA..:)

You know in the sites like ‘arsenal mania’ people throw abuse to each other which makes places like this dearer..as rico pointed they are properly controlled

  77. agirlagunner says:

WATH will send people to sleep because he won’t stop refilling their glasses with GG, rico. But I love my GG so I’m not complaining. πŸ™‚

STV, Robin and VDV are wonderful to watch, both in football and eye candy terms. Sighs. πŸ™‚

RA, I think you’ll have a ball at cosplay conventions. What with your fascination for dress-ups and disguises and what have you. πŸ™‚

That Stains dropping like flies would be Christmas come early. I’m really zzz-ish now, WATH, so good night! Must watch the Germs beat Barcelona. Be safe, ball boy!

    Niteynite everyone!

  78. rico says:

Finally the Kos boy has been confirmed πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    Night night agag πŸ™‚

  79. Suhail.TV says:

Agag.. It will be a great disappointment if we dont get him and dippers/any others snatch the deal..

    Good night..

  80. Red Arse says:

    Night Agag,

Suhail, I’m relieved my humour did not offend you! πŸ™‚

You are quite right some other blogs are very shouty and sweary and I do not like them.

Rico, JJ and Ave administer this site v. well, except they let me on it!! πŸ˜‰

  81. W.A.T.H says:

Nite AGAG and relax I’m only filling mine and ur glasses with GG cant be giving to much away now…

Lets hope they both lose cos I just want Holland to win.

  82. Suhail.TV says:

how old is kosi rico?? Pls give me a brief description.. πŸ™‚

  83. agirlagunner says:

STV, agreed. If I wanted to hear expletives, I’d just listen to our CEO lay into my immediate boss! Happens everyday, I might add. Ha.

rico and JJ and Ave make this a terrific place. πŸ™‚

  84. Dave says:

It’s important! We just made do last year. With Van Persie and Chamakh next season, you’ll see. Remember when Van Persie came back against Tottenham??? Goalie had to make four wicked saves. For starters we will score more headers from crosses and set pieces. Free kicks from van Persie were missed, and Arshavin and the crew can run in on them and we can FINALLY KICK SOM ASS!!!

  85. K-TR7 says:

On the post let me try to keep it as short as possible.jorge valdano the madrid director has been critical of modern footy which has developed specialized roles on the field of play.this has led to development of players such as ams/dms…a few years ago we had a full array of no.10’s such as rui costa,DB10,delpiero…who used to support the poachers such as inzaghi,RVN…when dms emerged, the no.10’s had no space to operate into hence the poacher lacked a regular supply of chances to score.this necessiated that the modern no.10’s:AA,messi,cr9…to reinvent themselves as inside forwards/wingforwards.for them to have an impact the CF has to have the intelligence to drift all over ‘breaking down walls’ for them.this has led to the development of the ‘false nine’ role that the likes of rvp have perfected.Eddy/vela/theo have struggled to do what rvp does since they don’t seem to have the tools to disorient two cbs and a dm.they have also so far struggled out wide too.playing two upfront is no longer an option since modern day teams play with 5 in mf and it would be suicidal as Capello can tell you after being annilhated by the Germans. However torres/villa have survived and are exceptions that prove the rule…

  86. you were right rico buses two in a day

  87. Suhail.TV says:

Boss.. again Agag.. 😦 Hope he wont haunt u in dream so sleep well ..

  88. Red Arse says:

    Rico,

Where did you see/hear the Kos confirmation?

I see that Wenger has made a new offer to Sol to stay. Don’t know if he has relented on his 1 year contract for over 30’s or increased money.

  90. rico says:

But who is the second?? Not Campbell…..

  91. Suhail.TV says:

some 17 yr old boy rico, so cos is 24, ya good age .. eager to see his play..

  92. ktr7 the the false 9 or the withdrawn inside forward was first devloped by meisl in pre war footie so wouldn’t say it was new thing

  93. Red Arse says:

    Really good point, KT,

To talk about 4:4:2 or 4:3:3 or even 4:5:1, is only relevant if yoiu have players who are capable of playing in those roles.

The problem was not really with Capello, it was the plonkers who he picked to play and were not competent!

  94. wikki have said he was gooner since yesterday

  95. he picked them and worked with them for last few years so cant really say it not capello prob

  96. W.A.T.H says:

STV………… Am going to upset the ladies but VDV is a tart and far to similar to what we got and I don’t want him….! I don’t think he is whats needed at all we got plenty like him and another centre half to go with Kos and we sorted there plus a keeper and then the big one we still need a big horrible animal in central midfield. Plus if YKH goes we need a replacement for him although Ramsey anyone..?

  97. agirlagunner says:

WATH, don’t give Erick any until he learns to manage his alcohol… Which should mean “never” πŸ™‚

Speaking of the dev, where is Erick?

KT, Torres will always be the exception to prove the rule. (of the many things you mentioned, my brain automatically highlighted “Torres”)

STV, it’s my immediate boss whom our CEO has reduced to tears ten thousand jillion zillion times. πŸ™‚

    Note to Self: Stop. Typing.

    I really am off now.

  98. Suhail.TV says:

25 when season starts.. so as TV. It would be a balenced back 4 if Kos plays well

  99. Red Arse says:

    Rico,

If you recall, I googled Kos last week and they all said he was an Arsenal player at that time.

    Jumping the gun?

  100. W.A.T.H says:

RA the other thing is did Capello pick those players or was he told who to pick………..?? Politics my friend..!

  101. W.A.T.H says:

    Nite AGAG πŸ˜‰ go sleep………….

  102. Marko says:

Thats Chamakh and Koscielny now signed and more to come I suspect.

  103. nice stat Koscielny scored three goals from just four attempts on target in Ligue 1 in 2009-10.

  104. rico says:

    Hi Dave and KTR7

Marko, i for one expect more, keeper and another CH at least πŸ™‚

  105. another ch but really need a holding mid

  106. rico says:

WATH, i think the same about Capello, the media told him who to select… Imagine had he picked a mix πŸ˜‰ a group of the young and old and we didn’t qualify, he’d be unemployed now…

  107. Red Arse says:

    Wath,

You could be right, of course, although I suspect that all England managers feel they have to pick certain players (Stevie G, [Yeuk], Lumphard) otherwise the “Meedja” would crucify them on the back pages!

I wonder why any Β£6m p.a. England Manager does the job? πŸ™‚

Got to go With Wath, hope you enjoy the game, and I’m not too cross you never offer me GG. Anyway what has Agag got that I haven’t? πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚

  108. Red Arse says:

    Nighty nite, Guys and Gals,

See you tomorrow if El Rico opens up. πŸ™‚

    Rico was it any good?

  109. Suhail.TV says:

No doubt Wath.. we need some beast of midfield.. But I think he would add some creativity in our desperate mid field (esp. when YKW goes)

Be Careful about upsetting ladies πŸ˜‰ Red Arse is there πŸ™‚

  110. rico says:

Its good RA, thank you, it will poss go up tomorrow, have another crazy day tomorrow 😦 😦

TTFN RA – and be good!!

  111. Marko says:

I don’t know why so many have reservations about this Koscielny fella? We’ve gone about it in the exact same way that we done with Vermaelen and he was brilliant in his first season. Yet you still get people talking about his cost and how he looks. It’s ridiculous, I’m sure he’ll be a great addition.

  112. not such a good stat Laurent Koscielny’s pass completion in the opposition half was just 57% for Lorient. Campbell 61%, Gallas 78%, Silvestre 71%, Vermaelen 69%.

  113. Suhail.TV says:

Night RA.. Am off too Night all..

  114. W.A.T.H says:

Marko, noone here moaning about Kos……….! He looks a right hard bastard…..! Nice…!

ST…. I think we got plenty creativity in midfield what we lack in balls….! When have i cared who I upset πŸ™‚

RA you get drunk on a bottle of cab you think I gonna waste GG on you… πŸ˜›

  115. W.A.T.H says:

    Nite RA & STV…. be good…..!

  116. W.A.T.H says:

To be honest RSD who cares what he does in the opposition half we got other players to do that I care what he does in our own half thats whats important.

  117. Marko says:

Who cares about a defenders pass completion in the opponents half? All that matters is he can defend and give the ball to a midfielder.

  118. i thought about say what does it matter be nice to have defender who gets nose bleeds

    more stats

Koscielny led the French Ligue 1 in the number of interceptions (159) in season 2009-10.

Koscielny made more defensive clearances (328) than any other player in France Ligue 1 during 2009-10.

Koscielny played for Lorient who allowed 191 shots on target against them, just 5 fewer than the division’s worst defence, Boulogne.

  119. rico says:

Night STV – have a good one πŸ™‚

Marko, i think he looks a good signing, iv’e always said i dont care who wenger buys as long as they wanted play for us and fight for 90 mins, this bloke looks like a top notch signing, now i want the next in the door…

  120. Marko says:

Agree Rico he looks strong, presumably quick and good in the tackle. He played 30-40 times last season meaning he’s not injury prone and ready to go and he looks hungry to play for us.

  121. rico says:

Marko, agree, he looks pretty lean and mean πŸ™‚

I’m starting to look forward to pre-season just a little more, chamakh is going to prove his worth too imho – he knows his job and in a side that creates as many chances as we do, i think he could turn out to be a great signing…

One thing that i like about these two signings and i know many wont agree but they are not ‘big players’ in the sense of attitude, arrorgance and overpaid. They have joined us to play football and test themselves at the highest level…

They will want to play and not just pick up a fat cheque…..

  122. as anyone actually seen this kos play 90

  123. K-TR7 says:

Rico the stains can’t even afford player wages!…

  124. rico says:

KTR7, I read something earlier about the stains being in financial troubl, you think it could be the beginning of really tough times for them ??

  125. rico says:

rsd, no, but we soon will and i can’t wait….
