Vela, Diaby, Gallas, Clichy and Sagna, oh, and Wenger….

So the World Cup finally kicks off later today…

First up its South Africa v’s Mexico and we should see our own Carlos Vela during the opening game up against the hosts.Following that, France play Uruguay, so more Arsenal interest as Gallas, Sagna, Clichy and Diaby could all be involved at some stage.

Its seems Gallas is off so I’m not really interested in how he performs to be honest but the others are all 99% sure to be playing in the red and white of Arsenal next season so interest for us Gooners will be high.Vela and Diaby are the ones for me who need a great tournament. Vela has to convince Arsene Wenger that he should be playing more next season, Diaby still has a few fans to win over so he will be out to prove a point when he plays. Personally, I shan’t hold my breath on the latter, I’m one of a few who hope he plays well and adds an extra few million to his price tag. Wenger rates him highly though so he’ll be staying so good luck Diaby, go out there and convince any doubters that you defend, you can learn when to pass and that your brain and feet can work together. I think with Clichy and Sagna, you know just what you’ll get, solid defending and poor crosses 😉

One other Frenchman we will all be keeping a close eye on no doubt is Yoan Gourcuff. Many an Arsenal fan see this man as the ideal player to fill any void that could be left in our midfield should ‘you know who’ move on in his career. Now at least we can all get to see him play in a few games. I think the French are in for a tough game tonight and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Uruguay win.

Arsene Wenger is also in South Africa, no doubt commentating for a French television/radio channel and earning a few extra pennies along the way. I guess we can disregard any chance of new faces being signed whilst he is at the World Cup, he doesn’t seem the kind of man to leave this to someone else, well not since David Dein left anyway…

What I don’t get though is why has Arsene Wenger gone to the World Cup, I bet we don’t see old Red Nose there, ‘Arry or Ancelotti, or many other top managers, no, they no doubt will be either having a break from football, or sorting out their new signings before having their break.

Why isn’t Arsene Wenger doing the same for Arsenal? He said he would make our signings before the World Cup began, well forgive me, it has and we still have only signed Chamakh…..

I know there’s plenty of time after the competition ends to sign players, but we then begin pre-season training.
Shouldn’t these new players need to be involved in the training, get to know their teammates, learn the ‘Wenger Way’??

What do I know, eh!! Maybe the deals are all done and dusted, he just want to keep us all in suspense!! If he is, it sure is working!

That’s it, not much gossip around to spread around, so just enjoy the opening ceremony and football later and lets hope for a great tournament.

Good luck to which ever country you are cheering on….  For me, despite flying the flag of St George at home, I can’t wait to see the Dutch!!

I’m going for a Uruguay and Mexico win

    Morning all

  2. SD-London says:

    Morning,

it is true Wenger should be resting and get his energy back because it is going to be a long season after the world cup

  3. rico says:

Morning SD, spoto on, he should be busy in England writing cheques…

  4. Nemesis says:

Who would want Red-Nose snotting and scoffing at their TV audiences or The twitcher one making kids have nightmares and….I will give The Lotti some respect by not mentioning his deficiencies:) Wenger is class and dignity personified – If you need an audience, Wenger will get you one, especially if he is spitting in his native French – I also think being in all the World Cup madness is a nice way to get lost in the moment and put your mind to some merry

  5. rico says:

Hi Nemesis, yes i understand why the others would not be there, but as Wenger himself says, club comes first and he has things he should be doing, if he hasn’t got them done already…

Its not like SA is a two hour plane journey to get back to london….

  6. Eddee says:

I’d like Nigeria to beat Argentina tomorrow, although that seems unlikely given the calibre of players we’ll be fielding against them.
Yesterday, was my 18th b’day can’t wait to return home – hopefully our lads will make us proud.

  7. charybdis1966 says:

Hi Rico – bang on the nail that Wenger should not really be at the World Cup. It’s not as if he isn’t paid handsomely by our club so money shouldn’t be the issue, and we all know it’s virtually unheard of for any deals to be finalised at World Cups.
As the man himself says though, transfers only occupy 2% of his working time for Arsenal so he probably thinks it’s only a busman’s holiday to be commentating at the World Cup.
Each transfer window Wenger fails to address the glaring deficiencies in the squad means we become more vulnerable to the chasing pack over-taking us.
If I was in charge I would order Wenger to take a rest if there is no transfer activity to be had – otherwise he merely seems to be keeping his public profile up at the expense of his ability to serve AFC, which should be his priority.

  8. Dik Aardvaark says:

Another way of looking at it is that while the other managers are at home or on holiday, Wenger is there watching his transfer targets and talking to their agents, who are definitely all in SA

  9. rico says:

    Hi chary,thanks

Top comment, how many times does he tell players that Arsenal come first, well, so it should for him too – he may be addicted to footie but all he is doing is tiring himself out!!

  10. Nazir says:

We dont want Arsene involved in transfers, he has too much power as it is. All he has to do is identify a player and hand it over to Gazidis. Ultimately, the World Cup is a shop window, performing players alert interest and knowing Wenger, he will track the player for a year or two before signing.

  11. rico says:

Dik, do you believe we will buy any player who is playing in the WC??

  12. gaya says:

funny you mentioned Diaby but there’s an article on the troubles in the french squad

    http://fourfourtwo.com/blogs/worldcup2010/archive/2010/06/09/why-france-might-change-for-diaby.aspx

As for Wenger i think he has a right to do what
ever he pleases with his spare time. Am sure you all do
and he has a contract with them Tv people i guess.

  13. rico says:

Nazir, thats what he does, look at the Ramsey deal for one, he likes to talk to the players personally, thats the way he does it… Of course the financial side would’t be down to him, but all the pre signing stuff is i’m sure

  14. Erick says:

Rico SA and Uruguay sounds better 😉 Morning all Shabalala is a player to watch great with the ball at his feet and he has dreadlock keep your eye on him.

  15. Joe says:

I’ve got no problem with people having their own opinion but when it gets to the point of blind hatred it’s not an opinion any more. Anyone who has been to a match knows you see more from a gantree position than you would on tv with players runs off the ball etc. You say we’ve only signed one player, well how many have Chelsea brought in? 100% less? No criticism for them though? Before you say they won it last year, if it was us and Wenger you would be saying standing still is going backwards. Watching how a player performs on a stage like the world cup is watching him at not the most technical, but the most pressurised level. On top of that do you not think that some of the players Wenger is looking at signing might actually be at the world cup? I’m glad our manager is seeing how players react to it. We have a whole commerical department now, I trust you do not believe that they will be paid high wages to simply re-sign players. Wengers has a player watched 50 times before he signs them, trust me, if he is looking at someone he will not have told them his targets.

  16. rico says:

Morning Erick, what not Vela 🙂

Joe, blind hatred, who has that then and for who??

  17. rico says:

Oh, Joe, I don’t give a hoot about the chavs, its Arsenal I support….

  18. Joe says:

I see articles from this site pop up on newsnow a lot and they always seem to be criticising Wenger. No one is saying the man is perfect but when it gets to the point where even what he does in his spare time is being criticised it seems like it is a little vindictive no?

  19. rico says:

No Joe, not at all, he told us he would have our players signed before the WC, he hasn’t…. same old fibbing..

  20. Joe says:

Do you know what he has tried to do? Are you spying on him or maybe his pet cocker spaniel? Not every deal you go for goes through. Had that kn*b head hill wood in the star the other day saying Fulham would not sell us Schwarzer, that would have been two players right? He only said he would sign two or three.

  21. Gooner says:

Wenger is probably scouting at the WC, he can tie up deals there as Im sure any targets he has will be international players

  22. SD-London says:

Well thinking about it really the Prem.Lge season finished almost 4weeks ago i do think Wenger would have rested enough really.

Don’t forget that the world cup will be another holiday for him considering his accommodation, movement, flights, and security will be taken care of by the media company he will be working for.

For a football man i think South Africa is a further holiday for and i am sure his wife will follow and he can surely make business decisions while there as well.

    Vela will shine today.

  23. Erick says:

Rico I like Vela but am sorry I have to support the motherland talked to Vela and he said its ok 😉

  24. rico says:

    Joe,

Please don’t think this site has nothing but critism of our boss, all we do is write about how we feel, isn’t that what blogging is about, our opinions…

I don’t support Arsenal because of wenger, I support them because they are Arsenal, why does he make promises he has failed to kepp all too often..

All we seem to get lately is ‘i tried for this player, i tried for that one’ but he then says he failed on the last day of the window….

Simple – he needs to start his dealings earlier!!

  25. rico says:

Ha ha Erick, as long as Vela said thats ok, thats fine then 🙂

  26. charybdis1966 says:

Joe, I raise the point about the usefulness of Wenger being at the World Cup because he himself has said repeatedly in the past that you shouldn’t judge players on the basis of how they perform in a 3-4 week tournament as it doesn’t give any indicator of how useful such a player would be in a 50 games plus domestic English season. So if being at the World Cup won’t benefit our transfer activity then why bother going there when a bit of rest or recuperation – or even sorting out the contracts of players we do want to keep, like Sol for instance, would serve AFC better?

  27. rico says:

Hi Gooner, i like your way of thinking, but on our shoestring budget do you honestly expect Wenger to buy at the WC??

He knows, any decent showing by players will increase their price…

If i’m wrong, trust me I will eat my words 🙂

  28. Erick says:

Joe whats wrong with someone stating his opinion just what we think he should do and we also aint Chelsea so we should not look at them as the gauge

  29. rico says:

Spot on again chary, did i read this morning that Silvestre is the more likely defender to stay?? What a daft choice, Sol gives us so much more, both on and off the pitch….

  30. rico says:

Off subject a tad, but what tragic news for Nelson Mandella and all his family re his great grand-daughter….

  31. Erick says:

Heard it over the radio Ric’s tragic 😦

  32. charybdis1966 says:

That’s only unsubstantiated rumour about Fish head at the moment Rico. I’m not going to get worried about that till it’s official – if it does happen and, worse, Sol goes I’ll have every right to throw my toys out of my pram. 🙂

  33. rico says:

Thatnk goodness for that Chary, i hope this is a rumour that bears no fruit, otherwise my toys will be out too… I’d rather we kept Senderos if we are that desperate…

  34. Joe says:

Erick, I said in my piece i’ve got no problem with people expressing their opinion, it’s everyones right and it’s a quintessential part of being a footie fan…until it goes over the top. As someone else rightly said earlier he’s technically had 4 weeks off already, how much holiday would he need? This isn’t playschool. Therefore it seems vindictive and less about opinion and more about stirring up dislike of the manager…Or getting hits on a website…

  35. rico says:

Do you honestly think we are really that interested in getting hits here Joe??

We have a core of bloggers who all chit chat away most days about everything – not always football…

Its not vindictive, its frustration when we are told by afc that they will do something but then dont fulfill their promise… There are very mixed views about afc too on here..

The general thought though is we want the ‘old arsene wenger back’ – and we don’t want a team that gets rolled over all too easily by the chavs and mancs etc.

you are very wrong if you believe we are on a mission of hatred towards our boss…

  36. Erick says:

Joe i blog this site daily and I have never felt that it has affected my view of the Aw its just what he promised us before the Wc may be your right we don’t know what he has been trying and failed but he should not go to the Wc then come next season say he didn’t get the right person yet he was busy doing other thing Arsenal pay him we should be his top priority

  37. rico says:

Everyones view is important here Erick, we know that, we just need to convince Joe 🙂

  38. Erick says:

True Rico we disagree to agree you know is Wath already in SA

  39. rico says:

He is Erick, he left the UK yesterday, so should have arrived safe and sound by now, poor old SA 😉

  40. rico says:

Just had a thought, the Chavs have signed a player Boetang!!(spelling)

  41. Erick says:

Mancity or Chavs Rico thought city had the holland star Boateng

  42. rico says:

oops, your right Erick, it was city who bought him 😳

  43. Erick says:

The sailor will GG SA thats for sure

  44. charybdis1966 says:

Joe, I’m quite sure that while Old Bacon face was touring the states with his Manskummers team promoting the ManU brand and getting more overseas supporters a few weeks back, Wenger was on a promotion tour for some engine oil company for football managers, promoting only himself, and not AFC. I really don’t get why an apparently principled man like Wenger does stuff like this, putting his own media profile in front of doing what’s best for Arsenal.

  45. Erick says:

Versatile player he can play as a right back or CH lets see what he can do City will push us next season we have to get our thing sorted out

  46. rico says:

I din’t know he was doing the oil thing chary, no wonder he’s so ‘slippery’ 😉

Thats the point Erick, wenger seems to laid back at times, city beat us and then drew at out home, i know we had injuries, i expect we will get them next season too – they and the spuds are not far away and we need to improve… that will only be done if he brings in experienced qulaity players…

  47. charybdis1966 says:

Yeah, I think it was for Castrol Rico, cue Mahler’s 7th Sypmhony(the music for the “Liquid Engineering” campaign, or “campain” as Private Eye would say).

  48. rico says:

Showing your age chary – i dont recall that advert 😉

  49. Red Arse says:

    Hi Rico, Erick et al

Interesting stuff on the site today.

I understand what Joe is saying and if thwere were any vindictive criticism of the Gaffer, I would certainly get upset.

As a relative “newboy” my reading of the situation is different from Joe’s. I think everyone is disappointed that instead of strengthening the defence as the Prof said he would, we seem to be losing players. Of course we all hope he has something up his sleeve. Let’s be positive. 🙂

Lucky old W, I wish I was with him in SA!

  50. realjaygooner says:

heya guys…i rily rily rily dont wana miss out on the world cup…seeing all our darlings in their national team colors..but unfortunately the country i am in is not showing the world cup, dont want to miss out on vela or diaby or sagna. Could any of you be having a link where i would be able to watch the games live?? plizz help me!!!
    btw, cmon oranje!!!

  51. charybdis1966 says:

It was only in the 80’s Rico – unless you’re a twenty-something girl I’m sure you’d a seen it. It had a spanner next to a can of Castrol oil with a little pool of oil between the two with the main theme from the 2nd movement of Mahler’s seventh, the horn solo.
    There’s a link for it here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxaqFvX649Y

  52. rico says:

Morning RA, your comments go into moderation, not sure why though 😦

  53. rico says:

chary, my comment was very tongue in cheek, i remember it all too well 😦 you know i was old even in the 80’s 😉

  54. rico says:

RA, thats just it, i hope Joe comes back and realises its all frustration – we want old arsene back!

maybe he is to surprise us all yet…..

  55. charybdis1966 says:

Oh right Rico, sorry I’m a bit slow today – stiff back and lack of sleep to contend with. I wish I could get excited by the World Cup – but it’s left me cold. The only joy to be had is if Swiss Phil can maim Xavi in the Spain-Switzerland game, as a goodbye gift to Gooners.

  56. Red Arse says:

    Rico

My pc crashed and I had to recover it. Perhaps your system recognised that. V. clever.

    You are not old!

  57. . says:

U need to get over ur dislike for diaby…he has learnt to defend but the fact is he is an attack minded centre midfielder….what do u want him to do next play in goal? He had a few bad games last year like almost EVERYONE else for us…do you not study him enough to remember the good games which were in the majority??

  58. rico says:

No worries chary, i thought youd guess though as you know i’m an oldie 😉

RA, i am 😉 Not clever, old, wordpress sussed your pc problem, i can’t take any credit 🙂

  59. rico says:

.says, i don’t dislike him, just think we could do a lot better – he may surprise me at the WC though, but not holding my breath…

  60. rico says:

off for an hour, later all

  61. SD-London says:

.says can you get a better name?

  62. SD-London says:

charybdis that was a nice article that person must be a poet , writer or journalist of some sort.

The World cup will be nice and enjoyable but it would have being more enjoyable if the media are not lazy and focus on other teams as well and not just England.

  63. charybdis1966 says:

I see where thay guy is coming from SD-London, the mere thought of John Terry is enough to bring my lunch back up, one of the most vile and despicable specimens of humanity possible.

  64. charybdis1966 says:

PS – you’d best explain your 3.01 comment to me – as I said to Rico earlier, I’m a bit slow today.

  65. SD-London says:

    charybdis1966 i was just having a go at comment 12.58’s name (.)

    🙂 🙂

  66. charybdis1966 says:

Oh right, LOL, I didn’t see the 12.58, a completely off-the-wall random name there SD-L.

  67. SD-London says:

    Vela got a goal disallowed

  68. rico says:

What a stunning goal, that’s worthy of opening the goal score tally in the World Cup 🙂 🙂

  69. rico says:

how rude of me, afternoon all, just got home with two filthy pups!!!

  70. charybdis1966 says:

I forgot, you have quite a menagerie Rico don’t you? Here’s hoping that France get a whooping tonight and our players (Sagna, Clichy and Diaby) get a long rest before our season starts.

  71. rico says:

Not so many nowadays chary, two cocker spaniels were added just before Christmas 🙂

Me too, I hope Forlan shines with a few goals 🙂

  72. agirlagunner says:

    Hola! Catching up…

  73. agirlagunner says:

rico, should you know who leave for the you know what, I wouldn’t mind Gourcuff.

I hope France exits early too; too many of our boys are in their squad. 🙂

  74. agirlagunner says:

    Nobody home, I guess 😦

    See you all tomorrow!

  75. rico says:

I’m here agag, was cleaning out the chickens 😦

  76. rico says:

VDV or Gourcuff for me – maybe VDV would be the fav as he’s dutch and Robin would be very very happy, if of course you know who goes….. 😉

  77. agirlagunner says:

Yay. I think it’s my turn to take care of the kitty litter. I’ve successfully evaded it for ages… Sigh.

Well, if we get in some top men, maybe you know who would stay. I hope Real Madrid beat the crap out of you know what, so they’d be less appealing to him…

  78. rico says:

There’s a lot of ‘you knows’ in there agag 🙂

  79. rico says:

Those poor kitty’s they must feel under loved 😉 😉

  80. agirlagunner says:

I was really glad to see Vela, btw. I hope he plays better in Mexico’s next game. MU’s new signing, Hernandez looked bright the short time he was on and the Spuds’ dos Santos played well.

I pay the housekeeper extra to mind the litter. Haha.

One of the dogs has cancer. 😦 Sniffs.

  81. Erick says:

Ladies since Waths exit you seen cold 😉 Howdy Agag

  82. Erick says:

Rico warned you Tshabalala is the in thing hope aw signed

  83. rico says:

    agag, that’s awful. just awful…. 😦

You naughty woman, poor kitts 🙂

  84. K-TR7 says:

Evening all.giovanni dos santos was the best player in the first half by a mile!mexico’s 3 man defence was also an interesting tactic with marquez playing as a sweeper…erick i’ve been a fan of Tshabalala for a long time.i’ve watched several kaizer chiefs vs orlando pirates derbies.modise is also a very good player…

  85. rico says:

Hi Erick, we are enjoying the peace without him 😉 😉 only joking ,……

Was Tshabalala the goal score? It was a corker…

agag, last summer i touted for Dos Santos, but the spuds got him and don’t ven know what to do with him, hes too talented for them….

  86. K-TR7 says:

Rico if you watch uruguay watch out for suarez and forlan partnership.i’m tipping diaby to shine…

  87. rico says:

Hi KTR7, i agree re dos santos, he looks a tricky character, diaby to shine, why will the sun be shining on his bald head 🙂 🙂

i hope youre right in all honesty, as for Forlan, he’s a mighty fine striker, i’ll keep a look out on suarez

  88. K-TR7 says:

Rico did diaby steal one of your pups?i bet he will be the best player if he plays…

  89. rico says:

    bet you 50p he’s rubbish ktr7 😉

  90. K-TR7 says:

    Youre on rico!

  91. rico says:

    😆 😆 ktr7…

  92. K-TR7 says:

    Rico are you watching?

  93. rico says:

What a dreadful game, boring boring boring….

  94. rico says:

I was ktr7, but i may now catch up on Coronation Street…..

  95. rico says:

No Henry, no Malouda…. Domenech has lost the plot….

KTR7, tomorrows post is just for you 😉 😉

  96. rico says:

I’m off peeps, great start to the WC, but the second game was shocking, well, all that i could put up with watching…..

    see you tomorrow, stay safe…
