Time to forget the Spanish?

May 24, 2010

It’s not even June 1st yet, the window is still closed, but already we have been linked with enough players to fill a first team sheet and maybe even a reserve side – crazy isn’t it….

Only yesterday we were linked with Schwarzer, Mertesacker, Melo, Steven Taylor, Gourcuff, Gomis and Simon Kajer, I think that’s all and in one day 🙂

Staying with yesterday, We had a new poster on Avenell Road, called Erik, he made a very valid comment which ended with good old humour!

‘It seems to me we should not bother signing Spanish players anymore, the promising ones go back to Spain as soon as they have a chance to… Reyes, Fabregas, Merida… and the really rubbish ones stay… Almunia… probably because in Spain Almunia would be selling fruit on the motorway’

My response was that Almunia would probably drop more fruit than he would end up selling!!

But Erik has a good point, Almunia apart, none of the Spanish players have been keen to stick around for the long haul at Arsenal, why?

Is it because of the climate, the team mates, the club, the food, the salary etc etc, is it the fact that we aren’t winning anything – (Torres and Reina at Liverpool kind of brings doubt to that, Arteta at Everton too) Neither of those two sides are playing in the Champions League next season, so will they leave their respective clubs this summer? I think Torres and Reina might….

I don’t know the answers, but I know Reyes was kicked to pieces from day one, especially by the Neville sisters, he also had to try to cope with ‘the look’ from Henry, but to this day, I wish he had stayed, he would have been good, very very good…. When he left, we were doing ok weren’t we?

Why did he really choose to leave?

Why are there so few players from Spain, playing for their country, but not playing in England?

Maybe Erik is right, maybe it’s time to steer clear from buying players from Spain. Don’t get me wrong, I know our little captain has been with us for nearly seven years, but he’s only 23 years old, he’s at an age where he should be heading towards his peak, an age where he can truly start to make a massive impact at Arsenal, an age where we should be getting the best from him. Build the team around him we all thought…..

Instead though, he wants to go home. Like many have said before, Arsenal have made him what he is today and now he wants to leave. Will another club get his best years, or, if he goes, will he be another player in a long list, who will regret it for the rest of his footballing career?

Will the likes of  Torres, Reina and Arteta stay and become heroes, or will they just players from Spain who fall/fail in their mission and one day, like most Spaniards around them, jump ship and return home……

As I so often write, only time will tell…..

What’s the difference between Cardiff, Blackpool and Arsenal??

May 23, 2010

Bit of a fun one, but of course the answer is easy isn’t it, we haven’t played (in a worthwhile game) at the new Wembley!

In between the gardening and over heating in the glorious sunshine yesterday, I watched some of the play-off match between Blackpool and Cardiff and from what I saw, it was a great game of football, its such a shame that either side had to lose.

Great goals, a slip by the resident disc jockey, a few ‘Almunia/Flapianski’ moments, but either side could hold their own in the Premiership I’m sure. During the last ten minutes, Cardiff reminded me a bit of Arsenal, near on all the possession but for love nor money they couldn’t get a cross to find the head of one of their own. I wanted them to get the equaliser but only so we could all get to see another thirty minutes of the two sides…

Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal Board will be very happy with the result I am sure, you can just imagine them worrying about having to pay the Toll fee when travelling away to Cardiff can’t you!! 🙂

Anyway, well done to Ian Holloway and Blackpool, another tough trip up north for us next season and all the best to Cardiff, next season for you hopefully…..

Not much news around really, but it seems one in and one out as Fran Merida’s agent has confirmed that the player will sign for At. Madrid in the next few days. Forget whether or not you think this lad could be good, apparently we are supposed to have made a last-ditch offer to him in attempt to keep him.. Why, not why keep him, but why do we always leave it until the eleventh-hour before trying to get a player to stay?? If Wenger and the club rate Merida, why has he not been either more involved with the first team (instead of Diaby or Denilson) or sat down, told how the club see his future, tie him down to a longer contract and then send him on loan like Jack Wilshere???

I just don’t get it sometimes….. That’s another player who has gone for free, as no doubt will Gallas, Silvestre and Senderos – put them all together and we could have got at least 15M and that equals a darn decent defender!!

For a club so tight with its spending, it sure lets money fly out of the window when players leave on a freebie!

One player who is coming up and we all know about is JET, he has just completed his loan and can’t wait for the 2010/11 season to start, the 19-year-old will now take his summer break before reporting back for pre-season when he hopes to make his mark in front of Arsène Wenger.

“This has been a good season for me,” he said. “Hopefully I can continue that next season.

“I’ll have a little break and then return for pre-season where I can make a big impression. Pre-season makes a big difference’

Pre-season, blimey, let’s get the summer over first and get the new boys in 🙂

Finally, on a day where many players are being linked to many clubs, well, except ours, Old Red Nose has taken a swipe at a few managers in an interview where he talks about who has posed the biggest threat to him,

“Wenger, over time, and Graham were tougher rivals. It was hot stuff between United and Arsenal until three or four years ago.”

Graham won the title twice in 1989 and 1991, Wenger won the Double in 1998 and 2002 and the Premier League with his unbeaten Invincibles in 2004.Ferguson and Wenger are the two longest-serving Premier League managers and the Old Trafford boss is intent on continuing his rivalry with the Frenchman.

Let’s hope Wenger gives Fergie something to worry about next season as he sure as heck hasn’t done for the last few years!

Have a good day all, it’s gunner be a hot one in the UK

Barca finally get their man! Shock, horror, we’ve signed Chamakh

May 22, 2010

Yep, yesterday Barcelona finally confirmed David Villa had signed for them and he did the usual parade at the Camp Nou. I am gutted, I always hoped Villa would join us, but I now have to accept it was all a dream, he’s now tied to Barca for four years…

Oh well, life goes on I guess… 🙂

Back to us, yesterday we were linked with Zapata, Tasci, Subotic, Cahill, Jagelka and Van Der Wiel on the footie gossip page, its funny how Cahill and Subotic keep getting mentioned isn’t it, I for one would be happy if they did sign too, the defence would be very strong, especially if you add Vermaelen, Djourou and Big Sol to those two. All we need then is a better goal keeper and we would reduce our goals conceded by at least half!

I like the sound of Subotic, 6′ 4″ and viewed as one of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga. He has height (no more Diaby in defence),he has power and speed, just what we need. Stick him alongside Vermaelen and add one more and we are sorted!

So after another transfer saga, none of us will be surprised to know we have signed a centre forward who goes by the name of Marouane Chamakh…… Here is what he said after securing his deal..

“This is a dream come true and a great joy to be joining Arsenal. My goal was always to play in the Premier League and Arsenal was the choice of my heart.

“Without any hesitation, Arsenal was my preferred club. The team and history of Arsenal, they make me dream. My goal was to join Arsenal out of the all the English clubs because it is a club that makes me dream and I have been a fan since I was a child.

“I’m very excited about playing at Emirates Stadium in front of the Arsenal supporters. I have heard many great things about the stadium and I cannot wait to be playing there in an Arsenal shirt.

“I will give my best to this Club, the Club that I used to support. We have many great players at Arsenal and I will be giving everything to help the team win trophies next season.”

No we have a new No9, his though has a No2 in front of it, he will wear the number 29 shirt, but in all honesty, where does this leave our own No9, Eduardo??

I think it could well spell the end for him, this league is hard, tough and very physical. Without proper ref’s many a tackle goes unpunished which results in players ultimately being injured the way that he was. Why would he now want to stay?

There’s another player who constantly gets kicked week in week out, I’m not going to mention his name, but maybe he want’s out before another player puts him out of the game for good…..

Here he is, just in case no-one has seen him 🙂

Have a great day all, one in and may many follow 🙂

Deja vu with M’bia? Time to let him go…

May 21, 2010

According to reports, Arsene Wenger has Stephane M’bia at the top of his lists of targets…

‘The 24 year-old Cameroon international has just helped Marseille to their first league title since 1992, having moved from Rennes last summer, where he began his career.

Mbia is considered to be one of the best midfielders in France. At 6ft 2in, he is a powerful presence in midfield, but is also a good technical player who is comfortable going forward – He has been likened by some to Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira.’

Not sure about as good as Patrick Vieira, he sounds a bit more like Diaby to me 😉 David Moyes wanted him last summer though so maybe he is a bit better than Diaby! We know Moyes is a good coach and currently has a pretty good midfield so if he thinks M’bia could add something to his squad then he could sure add something to ours!

I’m sick of reading about the Cesc story every morning, maybe the club need to be sensible now. Either come out and say that the player is not for sale at any cost and stand by their word or get on and set Barca the right price and let the lad go. With the money we could get good/great players and as much as we would miss Cesc, maybe we would be stronger without him.

When Cesc is on the pitch every player looks to see where he is, they always look to see if he can take a pass and that’s because Cesc can turn nothing into something, especially around the penalty area. Maybe though this in turn has started to inhibit other players self belief, a bit like when Henry was playing. Players relied too much on Henry, maybe they are doing the same with Cesc.

We need to get back to being a great squad, full of players who will roll up their sleeves and put in a hard days work, not players who will sit back and watch others around them perform wonders, that’s exactly what Cesc can do. I know it’s been said before but Cesc won’t get into the first team every week at Barca, how can he when you see the players that Barcelona already have. He wants to play football, we’ve seen that with our own eyes but at Barca I see him playing a ‘bit part’ for a season or two which would be sad, but wouldn’t be our worry anymore! Added to that, do we really want a player to be with us knowing he doesn’t want to be?

So really, we are in a win win situation with Cesc, either we get him for another season as he has four years (someone reported five yesterday) left on his contract, or we have a pot of gold to spend to bolster our fragile squad.

Why not start with a player like M’bia, as long as the ACON gets moved to the summer, that’s the defensive side of our midfield sorted. We have Lansbury, Ramsey and Little Jack who can fill the hole left by Cesc, or Arsene can go out and spend money on a great creative midfielder. Put the rest with what he already has and he can then sure up our weak defensive unit.

Just maybe, if Cesc goes we will become stronger – strange as I find that to write, but I think we will…..

Have Celtic and Spurs become more appealing than Arsenal?

May 20, 2010

To heck they have, but if you read the reports in the news you would start to think that was the case wouldn’t you?

Sol Campbell, brought back to Arsenal by Wenger, giving him another chance to play top flight football at his old ripe age and now it seems that money may tempt him to go abroad again. Well, Scotland isn’t abroad, but its a bloody long way from where I live and I could probably get to France quicker than I could get top Celtic’s ground!

Why would Sol (if he does) want to play in a league where you may just as well have two teams in it? Ah, I know, he wants to follow the same path as Cesc if he ends up in Spain, the two big clubs fighting it out season after season, yawn!!

On to the Swampies down the road, rumours are they have ‘pipped’ us for Arda Turan from Galatasary and are about to nab Pape Malikou Diakhate (WHO??) from Dynamo Kiev from under Wengers nose!! One top four finish in 400 years for the spuds and suddenly the world of football thinks that our local rivals are a better club to sign for.

Well forgive me but I am sure if Arsene Wenger wanted to buy either of the above two players, it wouldn’t be in the press until the deal was in its last stages! Well that ‘s how it was when we last signed a top player… Actually, was there a transfer window back then 😉 😉

In any case, I am sure that if Wenger truly wanted either of the above two, he would have certainly bought Arda Turan before now (I wish he had), as for Diakhate, just who is this defender who belongs to Kiev but has been on loan at St Etienne and is worth £7M….

I’ve never heard of him, but the price is right and he’s been in France, that transfer has got Wenger written all over it 😉

So what do you think, has Tottingham Hotspur seriously over taken us in the ‘where to go in London’ for a football club? Other than the Chavs of course..

Have the last five years of doing nothing much in the transfer market really made us ‘that bad’?

I don’t think it has come to that just yet and whether Cesc decides to go or not, I am sure we will see some quality signings being drafted in over the next few weeks.

Most players overseas would more often than not choose to play at a club managed by Arsene Wenger over ‘Arry any day of the week. Right now we may struggle to see just how good a coach he is because of all the ongoing going on’s, but surely the worm has to turn, hopefully that will be next season.

As for Tottingham, you can follow all Harry Redknapp’s interviews about new signings on ‘Twitcher‘ 🙂

Finally, if this mornings reports are right, Arsenal have finally grown some balls, Cescs price has been set at £80 Million, that should keep the b*****s away….

Have a great day folks…..

‘Cescgate’..You Decide!!

May 19, 2010

Would you welcome him back?

May 18, 2010

Not for one minute am I suggesting that Arsene Wenger is thinking about this, but…….

Yesterday there were a few rumblings about Alex Hleb, the man who flirted with the big clubs to get a move, told the world he hated living in the big fast city of London where the noise was all too much. The same player then got what he wanted, he moved to a small club in the quite little city of Barcelona!!

Well well, forgive me if I am wrong, but isn’t Barcelona a tad busier and more noisy than London?

Of course it is, but he got the move he wanted, that being out the doors of Arsenal in the summer of 2008.

Did anyone know that Hlebs mother was a builder… Good girl I say, didn’t know though, anyway, I digress..

Following his big salary move, it didn’t take long for him to be dumped onto the Barca bench, I think he started only five games for his new club! Whilst he gathered many a splinter he confessed that the worse thing he did was to leave Arsenal.

This is what he said in July last year….

‘I regret my move from London, but unfortunately nothing can be done about it now.’

While Hleb feels he has been poorly treated by Nou Camp boss Pep Guardiola, he showered praise on former manager Arsene Wenger.

‘For me, Wenger was like a father. I consider him one of the best managers in the world. For such a boss one wants to die on the pitch. Arsene managed to create a smashing team with a wonderful atmosphere inside of it. I have no doubts that if Arsenal had the same budget as Barcelona, the Gunners would be among the three best clubs on the planet.’

Are you reading Cesc Fabregas, the grass is not very often greener after Arsenal!!

On 29 July 2009, Hleb returned to his former club VfB Stuttgart on loan until June 30, 2010.

So that loan is now up and I wonder what will happen to Alyaksandr Pavlovich Hleb now, sure as heck he won’t go back to Barcelona and oust the likes of Messi & Co will he. He has hinted at a return to the Premier League, both Aston Villa and the money bags Mancs are keeping tabs on his situation so who knows.

Would you fans entertain seeing Hleb back at Arsenal after his antics against Murty, his rumoured whoring around in Milan over an ice-cream or would you rather see him rot on the bench at Barcelona??

Many want Flamini back, what about Hleb, at least he was with a team who beat the Mancs in the Champions League, albeit he was on the bench 🙂

I know my view, whats yours??

Finally and I think this is an interesting one, Ben Foster is due a medical at Birmingham today. (SSN’s) If this is true and Foster passes his medical then surely Birmingham will not require the services of Joe Hart next season. Hart is not going to sit around warming the Citeh bench having had a great season out on loan is he. My guess is he’s on the move, but where to? Is he going to move across Manchester and sign for Red Nose, or could he be moving further down south to us….

The Red Tops report this morning that Barca are due to make an official approach for Cesc Fabregas today. I know none of will be surprised at this, lets just hope that Arsenal have the balls to say ‘NO’..

Oh and did anyone know that we were in talks with Marouane Chamakh last night over a possible transfer? I was stunned when Sky Sports broke the news last night, didn’t see that one happening 🙂

Have a great day all, the sun is shining and we may just see our first summer transfer signed….
