We Need Moyes or O’Neill at the Emirates…

Well if we were to believe the media we do. David Moyes and Martin O’ Neil are the media darlings who can do no wrong, what great managers they are.
As soon as our season capitulated the press vultures were circling over Mr Wenger OBE. 5 years without a trophy, Airports closed because of the dust from the Emirates trophy cabinet, stubborn, Liar, etc, yawn..

Why?? Well it must be jealousy and as soon they see a chink in the armour they are in, digging away. The fans hear this and they don’t like having the piss ripped out of them and they want success, they get angry. So some start to want change.

So what has the Everton managed in David’s 8 years as manager?? A Champions League place which they never got beyond the qualifiers and a place in the FA cup final.. Whoop-a-doo. He hasn’t had much money to spend, but in the last 5 years Arsene hasn’t had any either he has had to resort to plucking gems from foreign Leagues like Vemaelen, Sagna and Nasri.
In fact he has even shown a profit in his transfer dealings lately.

Oh and Martin O’Neill he has spent a fortune in the last 4 years, mainly on second-rate English players to get another 6th place wow.. Is that good enough for us?

Well the answer is obvious really, 2 reasons, Arsene has built up an expectation and he is French.
I don’t know if the media know it, but in football England have their own national team and as far as I am concerned any one who isn’t English is foreign Fergie, Moyes, O’Neill are just as foreign as Arsene.

As for the expectation, what do we want? Should we drop out of the top 4 and finish 10th for a season then next year to get 3rd next season that would be a great finish and the fans would be happy because they know we are moving quickly in the right direction.
I don’t think the fans can handle the mediocrity, third, fourth, third is a bit boring.

But think about the teams that finish above us and indeed some below us, they are bankrolled, a sugar daddies toy.. Is that what we want to support, a millionaires play thing or a proper club that relies on it’s supporters and is run on money that comes out of our pockets?
Man City could just shut their turnstiles and play in front of nobody, they don’t need their supporters, but at Arsenal they rely on us and that makes me feel that Arsenal is mine and reliant on my support.

If Blatter brings in this self-generating funding rule, we with Arsene will rule the world.

Arsene is a winner and lately he seems opening up and letting a few things slip out, last week he finally said we have had little money for transfers and this transfer window we can compete with Chelsea in the transfer market, I cannot see him changing his spots and buying for the sake of it, but I do think he has seen enough of project youth now and showing blind faith in them. I am hoping he goes back to the old Arsene and plucks out the Henry’s and the Pires’s and ducks and dives like the old days.

This isn’t supposed to be a dig at Mr Moyes or Mr O’Neill, but are they really as good as Mr Wenger OBE….. really?

    Morning Roadsters..

  2. arsenal4ever says:

agree. They would spend for top-class!!

  3. HT says:

Moyes maybe – he plays good football at Everton and can spot a bargain.

O’Neill – not unless we want to go back to the days of GG – solid defence and long ball / counter attacking football and spending too much money on over hyped players that are just not good enough.

Wenger will come good as soon as he starts to spend.

  4. jabberwocky says:

i agree…to be honest i clicked on the link with blood boiling so the relief at the sarcasm was well worth it. we are set for years of domination, we just need patience. 100 years from now wenger is going to be remembered by arsenal fans as the man who turned us into a global force.

  5. Martha Focker says:

we need less blogger talking shit

  6. avenell says:

Welcome aboard HT.. Could Moyes attract the top quality players that we need?

    Morning arsenal4ever..

  7. avenell says:

Morning jabberwocky.. I just get sick of the shit spilled out by Alan Brazil etc..

every conversation starts with.. ” now I love the way arsenal play… but”

They even like Man Citeh more than us..

  8. Ragnar says:

I’d say that Moyes is at least as good as Wenger.

Your comparison of the money they have spent is not on equal grounds. You must look at the transfer money turnover as well as the profits/losses made.

  9. pablo says:

As an Evertonian I love Moyes, but he’s not in the same league as Wenger (yet). Any Arsenal fan who wants the Frenchman replaced, need their bumps feeling. Arsenal really do need to splash the cash this summer, because if they don’t, I can see them being left behind along with Liverpool.

  10. avenell says:

    Morning Ragnar..

The thing is in the late eighties Everton and Arsenal were clubs on a similar level.
Both won the League and had similar attendances (32,000 ish) it is only what Arsene has created that has allowed us to compete on a world stage.

  11. avenell says:

Hi pablo.. You talk sense mate.. It is nice to hear the views of an outsder as it were.

  12. swiller says:

It’s the same with Benitez, some of the rubbish the press printed after the defeat to Chelsea was bordering on the racist.

  13. EAC3 says:

Saw the headline and thought immediately it was another crass and illreasoned anti Arsene blog…instead its a well constructed assesment of where we are both from a playing /performance perspective and from our financial stability position.
AW will buy well in the summer just as he usually did when he had money to spend pre Emirates. Allied to the new quota system AFC is better placed on all fronts than any other major European club.
Vive Arsene and up the Arse!

  14. avenell says:

    Cheers swiller and EAC3..

I think the rise of the Spuds has affected the fans way of thinking..

  15. Mark says:

    well said.
almost got fooled by the title 😉

  16. DPT says:

Did you see the spuds love in on sky sports news yesterday!!!!!!! They qualified for the champions league play off and you would think they had won the bloody champion league!! I could not beleive the amount of shite they were coming out with “isn’t harry a great manager” etc etc. They have spent massive amounts of money of the last couple of years to qualify for the champions league. They under achieve EVERY season and then when they finally do qualify they are talked about as if they are world beaters! Yet we do it EVERY yaer and are talked about as failures!! Would someone please explain the fucked up logic of the media/pundit world??????????

  17. paul says:

a swap deal involving wenger and o’niell.
i would love the frenchman at villa and would have the confidence that we would pass arsenal very quickly as i think mon has ran out of ideas and 6th is the best he can come up with.
trust me when i say this my gooner friends, i would rather be sitting on your side of the fence than ours as the grass IS GREENER but you cant see it untill its gone!

  18. avenell says:

    Hi Mark..

DPT.. I read somewhere that the Spuds were the 3rd biggest spenders in the Premiership since it began..

One top 4 place in 17 years.. lol..

  19. avenell says:

Nice one Paul.. I’m glad you took the post in the right way..

I like the Villa, they deserve to be up with the Man U’s and Liverpools of the world.
They seemed to have a bad run of managers when the Premiership started and slipped backwards..

  20. brdgunner says:

100% agree. There has to be pride in our club that we are where we are with our ethical approach.

I keep being told that if Fergie was with us we would win more, Jose is the latest one. However, they would have walked out years ago when told that they can’t

    1) Buy players without approaching the club first
    2) Spend anymore than we can afford.

I don’t think people realise what a handicap it is to be legal in our approach for players. Had everyone dealt legally in the transfer market and respected other clubs. We would have had an even league years ago. Man U have made a team from poaching and tapping up the best of the rest from the Prem. It happened to them once and look how they reacted.

    COME ON THE GUNNERS

  21. Shanks says:

Wenger is a top manager who would have done well anywhere – given the time and money
David Moyes has had to rebuild Everton from the desperate, home for past-it high-earners he inherited
He’s done this despite the Board mortgaging everything the club owned (including future season-ticket sales) to keep ceditors at bay
Despite finishing 5th twice in the “richest league in the world” Everton are skint and Moyes has to fight each close season to retain players and scrounge money for improvements
Both managers strive to play football, although it’s taken Moyes a long time to get the team to play with a measure of Arsenal’s flair combined with his own work ethic
Would Wenger have put up with 8 years of hoping the Chairman finds some cash down the back of the sofa?
Would Moyes know what to do at a club like Arsenal where he would get sufficient finance to support the team?
    Who knows?

  22. efc92 says:

I think thats abit unfair on Moyes! He turned a relegation battle side into a side that consistantly competes for the top 6 bar this season! (yet I think we could have achieved more if it werent for the poor start). Moyes has also only spent spent about 30m net value at his time at Everton.

I know Everton and Arsenal were on par in the 80s but it was always going to be easier for you to become a bigger club.. seeing as you have always been the biggest club in the capital meaning a richer city with more fans etc.. whilst were from a much smaller city and our neighbours are bigger than us!

  23. Hugo says:

I’ll explain DPT- sp*rs are managed by good old ‘Arry, everyone’s best mate. He’s English don’t you know…

  24. avenell says:

    Hi brdgunner..
To me supporting the Chavs or Citeh is like supporting a formula one racing team..
You don’t really support them you like them and the team with the most money for development always wins.

  25. avenell says:

    Hi shanks and efc92..

I wasn’t trying to knock Moyes, just the media perception of him as opposed to jolly foreigner Arsene.

  26. brdgunner says:

    Ha ha, clearly.

I would like some players in this summer, however, to questions Arsene’s desire to win is unbelievable. They guy was born to win, except he has as much desire to win the right way as he does to win at all.

Lets beat Fulham, welcome Chamakh, hope for a new keeper and see where this takes us.

  27. avenell says:

And get some of the injured players back.. keep Diaby and Denilson on the bench as back up..

  28. dilshan says:

we all seem to have forgotten that Oniel has spend the 4th highest amount in PL since taking over villa and he has won nothing either…the solution is not getting rid of AW or spending bucket load of money but finding the right players. AW has said at the beginning of this season that this was a decisive year for these players, which means that failure ( relative) would lead to changes and that’s exactly what will happen..

  29. th14 says:

Everton have spent more than Arsenal in the last eight years and so have Villa. Fact. Count up their trophies and then ours. Nuff said! In comparison with AW they are Championship quality. I know AW has fucked up this year but I’d rather see Hiddink if we had to replace AW.

  30. avenell says:

and Everton would die for a ground like the Emirates…

They will never get there without a sugar daddy now. We jumped on the bandwagon just in time.

  31. Bruce says:

The comparism is not very fair. The starting positions of the two clubs when the managers took over has to be considered. Arsenal was so much more accomplished before AW took over. This cannot be said for either Villa or Everton.

  32. efc92 says:

TH14 Theyre totally different managers, Wenger didnt take over the job whilst Arsenal were a relegation side.. Moyes did with us and is obviously going to have to spend abit of Money to improve us. In the 8 years arsenal have spent Less than us you have only went down hill.

  33. efc92 says:

Ye you got on the bandwagon just in time, well we missed our ship to become a dominant english side in the 80s because of our neighbours!

  34. nirmal says:

if and when AW hangs his boots what choices do we have — Van Gaal, Hiddink, Van Basten, Blanc, Ancellotti, Mourinho, Hodgson, Capello! – proven at the highest level.

Others will be potential for this level – ONeill, Moyes, Jol, Laudrup

So this argument can rest till boss decides to rest!

  35. Andy Mack says:

Why go for a manager that’s not as good as AW…… Some of our ‘supporters’ are really embarrassing….

  36. Schneider says:

Anyone who suggested those two are probably sick in the head. They are just not good enough. There is no way they can fit into our team.

  37. avenell says:

We lost out because of those tossers too in 89′..

It really pisses me off when I see the Kop all standing up and singing and the media saying what great support they have.
And because of them the Emirates is like a libery and if you satnd up you get chucked out..

  38. avenell says:

Sorry to those held in moderation.. welcome and your comments will come straight on now..

  39. avenell says:

Schnieder.. Some have suggested them, but the main point is in the media’s eyes they can do no wrong..

They have spent more than Arsenal, finished below Arsenal yet they are loved by the paps yet Arsene gets third and the piss taken out of him.

  40. efc92 says:

I no you suffered aswell because of them, btw it must have been abit of justice to win the league at Anfield in the style you did 🙂

  41. rayman says:

Its not just how much we have spent over recent years you also have to consider our wage bill and the cost of tickets. When you look at those factors too AW has been failing consistently over the last 5 years. He has asset stripped the squad, replaced quality with dreadful mediocrity, paid way over the odds for ‘potential’, compounded it by then paying far too high a salary to players who have won nothing and show no desire to to do so.

His tactics have always been woeful including his substitutions but this season his complete inability to plan for any opponent from Stoke to Barca has been shocking.

His time is up, we will win nothing under AW he simply is not driven to win, his only target is to qualify for the CL. Arsenal is now a money making machine for him and the board and the fans can go and fuck off. But we keep showing up and paying the money, buying the shirts etc so why do anything else?

Even if SAF wins the league this year he has committed to freshening up the squad and when he says that we all believe him. AW has said that every year and then done fuck all. For every two he buys he sells three or four and brings in the likes of Eastmond or Denilson.

The deterioration of Vela since he arrived is a perfect example of how utterly unmotivated the squad is to acheive anything. Does anyone think that he could care less whether we ever won another game or not? Its just not a consideration for the board, the manager, the squad. We are the perpetual also rans, a feeder club for those with ambition to win things. Even a loss to Fulham and the Spuds finishing above us won’t affect the manager’s position, would anyone be able to produce their best work if they had such a cushy job? The whole structure of the club is poisined by mediocrity and low expectations and until AW leaves it will remain so.

  42. avenell says:

The only thing that soured it was magic Mickey t moving there the following year.. He lost a bit of cult status.

Before that though I used to watch some of the Everton games when they played in Europe it was quite refreshing to see a another team in europe.
Goodison Park is a great ground too the architecture reminds me of our beloved highbury..

  43. avenell says:

Hi rayman sorry you got held up.. You are free to blog now, thanks for a great comment.

  44. avenell says:

This is going to be a bit of a turning point this close season.. if I don’t see some action I may move to the other side with you..

  45. rayman says:

I have been a staunch supporter of AW until this year but this season has genuinely broken my support for him. The weakest Premiership in a decade and we are in danger of having the spuds finish above us.

The deterioration in the squad and the first 11 is such a sad sight. Its almost impossible to remember how good we used to be, how passionate the players who played for us used to be (Ray, Paddy, Martin, Freddie, Henry, you can go on and on…) when you look at the current team.

The sheer ineptitude of so many of the players is one thing but their utter lack of determination to win for the club, which I think is so apparent, is whats so hard for fans to take. Is the effort these players have been putting in in proportion to their salaries, let alone any feeling of loyalty to the club and fans? Compare that to the salaries of the fans and the efforts they make to attend games home and away and its just an incredible insult. The fans are the club not the likes of Diaby or Denilson, players who seem to think they are so great they don’t need to mark up, track back or concentrate for 90 minutes once or twice a week.

The manager and board owe the fans some success, its as simple as that. And unless we are very confident of AW delivering it next season he should go asap. And I have absolutely no confidence that he can delvier a trophy of any sort and certainly not the Premiership. he just doesn’t have the hunger or motivation any more.

  46. avenell says:

I agree rayman.. what happened to do it for Ramsey?

Diaby and Denilson were sweating blood to bring him the Premiership.
Don’t under estimate Arsene though.. his hands are tied for another 3 weeks and he never publicly slags his players (he might not be able to sell them for as much) but his behavour and body language tell me he may have a bit of fight left in him..

  47. Donnyfan1 says:

Thick as a butcher’s block and mad as hamsters. We need to get rid of you lot- not Wenger!!

  48. avenell says:

Donny.. try to read a bit further than the headline.. it’s pro Wenger..

    kettle,black, pot.. lol..

  49. efc92 says:

Does it also piss you guys off when the Media say things like ” Arsenal fans arent to unhappy winning trophies because of the style of football”?

  50. avenell says:

They are mainly w***ers.. They are so out of touch with the real world..
We haven’t even played good football since Hleb and Flamini left.
The only pundits I listen to is the french geezer (from Arsenal TV) whatever his name is (help!) Steve Stammers and Perry Groves the rest just talk to get attention because they know it’s good publicity to slag the Arsenal.

  51. avenell says:

Kevin get your homework done and you can relax until school on Monday..

  52. andy p says:

Lovely article, I think people are letting their emotions get in the way. Arsene has done a fantastic job at arsenal and we are extremely lucky to have such a manager. Project youth has given us top 4 status and it is time to take project youth into the next phase which is to build an unbeatable outfit. ingredients include a transfer kitty, which has been totally lacking since the move to the emirates. also we need the main first team to stick around and that includes gallas. perhaps let some of the not so good players go though. the irony is that a lot of players are being played out of position and so haven’t performed like they can, a suitable reward is not to get rid of them. First things first though, the boys need us to get that point against fulham… can’t see rottenhan finishing higher than us!

  53. JonJon says:

    oh ave nice one..

im one of those who’s had enough now..too much cloak and dagger and not enough hearts and minds..

id like him to stay and put it right…i just dont think he has what it takes anymore..its turning sour..

i dont want him sacked..he deserves to see out his contract…but he has to go back to the days of arsene trotter if he stays for three more years…currently he his here to make money and i dont think hes a winner anymore..

  54. Coadsi says:

ave i almost did not read today’s post due to the title but, i am happy that i did, nice one.
andy p, at this point all i can say is i hope they dont finish ahead of us the way we are playing. the only thing is we dont expect fullham to send out their strongest team.
that being said we did not expect the scum to qualify for the CL or to beat us either.

  55. avenell says:

    Thanks Coadsi and cheers andy..
Alwight JJ.. when is the lady of the blog back?. I thought she said today..

  56. JonJon says:

    im triffic mate..

i dunno she said thurs so i thought today too..

  57. moyes says:

wenger has done a great job for arsenal and i think given the funds of someone like liverpool he would never have cocked it up like benitez. if he’s given a bit more cash this summer, now your stadium is all but paid off, i think a more ernest title challenge could follow. you need at least one more top striker and possibly a midfield general imo to take you to the next level.

  58. avenell says:

Cheers Moyes.. It’s been a great response from you evertonians..

How do you think Arsene would do at goodison?

  59. avenell says:

What were the Everton fans like when you went there last year JJ.. “friendly”?

  60. JonJon says:

the everton fans aint too bad..i actually like goodison park and i like everton..

i think moyes is a good manager and if it werent for their injuries in the first half of the season theyd of finished above liverpool..

  61. rico says:

Oi JJ and Ave, which part of ‘see you sometime Friday’ did neither of you understand 🙂 🙂

Ave, its nice down your way 🙂

  62. avenell says:

Hi Rico.. where did you visit? anywhere good.

You were pretty lucky with the weather.. It normally pisses down if I go anywhere..

  63. avenell says:

Coadsi.. at least we have a song for him if he comes from Senegal.. 😉

    Is he crap then?

  64. rico says:

    Hi ave,

    Quintrel Downs
    Pad’stein’
all the beaches and bays around crantock and just loved it, walked with the dogs and our friends and their cute little spaniel, had just the most wonderful three days….. didn’t want to come home…..

    Learned a new word to – D’rectly 😉 😉

  65. avenell says:

I had to ask er indoors what that meant lol..

Crantock is about 2 miles from where I am working at the moment.

  66. avenell says:

Did you catch any crabs at Padstow? 😉

  67. Coadsi says:

ave i have never seen him played but when a team like saint etienne who is struggling to remain in the top flight of the french league refusing the player that speaks volume to me ave.
On another note, twitcher prem manager of the season????
on a brighter note zamora and duff apparantly out of arsenal match (as expected)

  68. rico says:

crabs !! that does not need a reply 😉 😉

    Where are you working then??

  69. rico says:

How rude of me not to have said Hi Coadsi, how you doing ..?

  70. Coadsi says:

i am doing better rico, Arsenal have pretty much done a number on me recently with the way they are performing. to compound things spuds in the CL (hey rico prolly i will just blame u for that since u were not around). but like i said rico slowly recovering and doing a bit better.
but happy to know u had a great time.

  71. avenell says:

    Next village up.. Cubert..

  72. rico says:

good to hear you are a bit better coadsi, but you can’t blame me for arsenal, they have been shocking long before i left ofr my break 😉

spooky ave, beautiful beaches…… can’t wait to go back, soon to i hope ..

suppose i goots do a post for tomorrow as i have been away 😉

  73. avenell says:

    Nice one rico.. 😉

I seem to have lost the normal crew and have got a new lot of friends from goodison..
    They are missing you..

  74. rico says:

    missing me… i dont think so 😉

i’ll do a post, but it will be a later one 😉

  75. rico says:

got some things to do, see you all tomorrow …

  76. avenell says:

Later is the new early… 🙂

    see ya 2morrow rico..

  77. moyes says:

Arsene could do a good job at goodison but it would take him many frustrating seasons to get the team playing in a style he’s accustomed to. he would like the youth system at everton; there are several talented youngsters who will break into the first team in the next 3 seasons. the fans at everton are loyal and patient like the arsenal. however, without the pulling power of the nouveau riche clubs, I predict difficult times for more traditional clubs who can’t spend their way out of trouble. Im an old school romantic though and believe in steady organic progress but that may not be enough anymore…
