Experience wins games, just ask Roy Hodgson

I know it’s not Arsenal, but it’s relevant in my humble opinion….

Wenger – Hodgson’s my Manager of the Year

Fulham have punched above their weight more than any other side and Roy Hodgson should be named Manager of the Season, according to Arsène Wenger.

The Cottagers defeated Hamburg 2-1 on Thursday night to progress to the Europa League Final where they will meet Atletico Madrid.

Fulham’s only honours to date are an Intertoto Cup success in 2002 and a brace of English second-tier titles. Their only appearance in a major final came in 1975 when they lost 2-0 to West Ham United in the FA Cup Final.

Hodgson took charge at Craven Cottage in December 2007, with the club stuck in a relegation battle. He saved them from the drop and then secured a seventh-place finish last season before taking Fulham to the cusp of European glory this term.

That’s why Hodgson will get Wenger’s vote for the end-of-season individual prize.

“Fulham and Roy have been fantastic,” he said. “They are the ones more than anybody else who have punched above their weight. And maybe that’s why Roy deserves it [manager of the season].

“Their intelligence, experience and his scouting has been good. His buys have been good. He’s bought players who aren’t not in the top three or four but have the level to flirt with it.

“Zamora, Duff have played at top clubs, Murphy has played at top clubs. They have players who can play at the top level but at some stage lost out.

“Hodgson is a fantastic manager – but there’s no secret. You need good players and they have good players.”

Well Well Arsene, I agree about Fulham, but what about us…….

Zamora, Duff, Murphy – if they had been Arsenal players, you would have either let them go on freebies, or told them they are too old!!

Its about the player, if the player WANTS to play then he will, and those three do, and that’s why they are in the final. Fulham players didn’t ever give up the fight, just ask Juventus!

Credit where credit is due, Hodgson has done a fantastic job at Fulham, no doubt on a restricted budget. Fulham could have been facing a Liverpool side who recently have thrown dead money after dead money on players, but no, they got knocked out.

Its not always about how many you buy, its more about who you buy and who you keep. Sometimes I think we have sold the good and kept a few of the bad… Arsenal need a couple of players with experience, by which I mean players who have ‘been there and done it’ and still ‘want it’ – not some old has been who been cast aside by his club because he is no longer good enough!

Look at Danny Murphy, Fulham bought him when he was thirty, today he still plays like a 25 year old. What does Wenger often do with our thirty year olds – invariably lets them go or won’t give them anything more than a new one year contract.

All I want to say to Roy Hodgson and Fulham is, Good Luck for the Final, I truly hope you win – you deserve it..

    Morning all….

    Morning Rico,

Could this be the time when Wenger finally admits the folly of his over 30 policy? You really cannot win anything with just kids, you need at least 5 experienced players mixed with the kids to be successful. Everybody keep pointing at 1999 Mancs, but have a look at that team, they only had 4 or 5 kids in the starting line up.
Look at some of the over 30s that Wenger chucked out, some of who have enjoyed another 3-4 years at the highest level. At the point when we should be reaping the rewards of years of experience in the EPL he shows them the door!

  3. rico says:

    Morning Mustang

I for sure hope so, and not a player on a freebie like Silvestre, players like Murphy are different, he was in his prime, we need the right mix, three should do it 😉

  4. rico says:

I’m off for a bit, catch up after lunch….

  5. I don’t think there’s anyone with a bad word to say about Roy Hodgson or Fulham.

There’s no doubt in my mind we’ve lost players we might have done better to keep. Gilberto Silva springs to mind, one can only hope the boss has learned his lessons.

  6. Suhail.TV says:

    Hello every one ..

  7. Suhail.TV says:

    Any one ?!

  8. rico says:

Afternoon, haven’t missed anything then 😉

Hi STV, its a quiet old day…

  9. W.A.T.H says:

Might as well have an echo competition on here………. Evening all 😉

  10. rico says:

Evening WATH – see the spuds and citeh both won again 😦

  11. K-TR7 says:

    Afternoon…

  12. rico says:

they play eachother on wednesday i think, i can’t decide whether i want the spuds to get 4th so they get battered in the CL, or citeh who will no doubt spend mega bucks to win the CL…

  13. rico says:

Evening KTR7, what do you know….

  14. W.A.T.H says:

I want a draw so it goes to the last game and then heartbreak 4 the yids although if they finish 4th and then get knocked out the qualifying round I’d piss myself laughing even more 🙂

  15. rico says:

As long as they suffer, thats all i hope for…..

  16. K-TR7 says:

Evening rico.nasri wants to emulate pires,AA says he has been off form for 5 years…

  17. agirlaguner says:

Hello, all. Fulham have had a great run… But I hope they don’t put in a good shift against us on the final match day seeing how the spuds and citeh both won.

Jack had some brilliant runs today. He’s gutsy if a bit of a hothead. He was booed everytime he touched the ball but still went toe to toe against the spuds. Loves it!

  18. rico says:

saw the nasri comment, its good to see he has a great role model to look up, the day he gets as good as bobby, we’ll all happy, but nasri is young in comparrison to pires when he was on fire. wenger needs to sort out his best position and stick with him there, not keep messing him around…

oh, he needs to do that with all of them… 😉

as for AA, i am sick of tired of hearing stuff from/about him….

  19. Suhail.TV says:

We missed pires for ever.. What a player he was. Rico, wenger was not fare to him. Wondering why he doing these sorts to keep a 33 yr old gallas now. Each time when I see scholes or giggs am thinking about pires with pain.

  20. K-TR7 says:

Pires was my favourite player in the invincibles squad.i was gutted when he was subbed in the cl final,it wasn’t fair to him.he and freddy were a joy to watch especially in counter attacks.pires scored 15+goals each season and i will always respect him,a true LEGEND…

  21. rico says:

Hi STV, I don’t understand the Bobby departure either, he had so many years left in him, as proved to this day.

I want Gallas to go and Silvestre, replace them with one great (Alex) and another big monster with the attitude of sol…

  22. rico says:

Pires and Freddie were Wenger ball, now we try and play the same tactics with players who cant play that way….

I too loved them both, especially Freddie in his CK’s 😉 Bobby was shocking in his first season, but after that he flew, at his peak he was one of the worlds best, then along came the Newcastle game 😦 😦

  23. Suhail.TV says:

It was a bizzarre transformation for us turning the invincibles to just invisibles. Compare the team in 04 05 to one started the 06 07 season. Every thing completed a year later. The face of arsenal was changed then.. Pires was my favourite too ktr7,. I was equally stunned by that decision.. Wenger was unfair with gilberto too.. He could be our makelele.. He replaced all these great players with mediocres..

  24. agirlagunner says:

Hallo, all. I think I have a comment in moderation, Rico. I used a different email addy. Just ignore it.

Nasri always sounds enthusiastic about our club. I like that. Pires was always all over the field and his’ stats were the envy of strikers. Freddie in his CKs? Oh my.

  25. Suhail.TV says:

No such players either.. Agag.. in this squad.

  26. agirlagunner says:

Hola, STV. Pires was my no. 2 in the Invincibles squad. I was always an Henry girl. I loved seeing their interplay. Yes, even that infamous penalty cock-up.

The Invincibles were so readily dismantled, it left everyone floored. I think we’re building something really special with our mostly little and very young men, but if we don’t supplement the squad with quality players who will not buckle in high pressure games, the ones here now, will leave.

  27. rico says:

Hi AGAG, comments out so if you use the same email address it will not pop you into moderation…

Pires won us the invincible title all on his own, at Pompey 🙂

  28. Suhail.TV says:

    And you like ck ljung?

  29. rico says:

spot on agag – not ten players, just three or four will get us back where we deserve to be….

  30. Suhail.TV says:

    When is our game rico?

  31. agirlagunner says:

STV, which red-blooded female doesn’t like Freddie in his CKs?

Rico, so one of our fantasy signings seems en route to Barcelona? Oh nooooo.

  32. Suhail.TV says:

Am hopefull of next season. Chamakh would be a ready made adebayour, and if we get torres too.. We’ll piss off barca..

  33. Suhail.TV says:

Agag !!.. He was an icon in that squad and a special player too..

  34. agirlagunner says:

I am excited about Chamakh as well. Barca’s pissing me off trying to sign Villa. As if they don’t already have the best players in the world?!

Cesc has the summer to be whispering into Torres’ ear all the great things about our club.

  35. Suhail.TV says:

And also not to be whispered by pique iniesta and xavi.. I cant wait for the signings to be revealed..

  36. rico says:

    STV – Monday, 5.30pm away at blackburn…

AGAG, Freddie 😆 which player is off to barca, not Villa, please say he is not 😥

  37. agirlagunner says:

Of course, he was STV. That squad had quality in all positions. Even people coming off the bench were great, not just good ones.

Rico, it’s just rumours right now, but yeah, it’s well… your Mr. Villa. He has said that he does not want to talk about his future and only wants to concentrate on Valencia though. (How that helps, I don’t know)

  38. agirlagunner says:

“And also not to be whispered by pique iniesta and xavi…” Haha, stv.

  39. rico says:

Oh no agag, but to be fair on him, he has always said he wants to stay in spain, i have just been hoping for the last two seasons.. he is just what we need imho…

STV, i keep thinking that this summer will be the signings summer, but then i remember how many times times wenger has said he will go into the market…

on the plus side though, he has never been quite so forth coming about what he plans to do, so he has this summer only for me…

  40. Suhail.TV says:

Wenger always went for window shopping rico.. Hope for a heavy one though this term.

  41. rico says:

Wenger in the transfer market is just like ladies on a diet….

We look at the menu, but never buy 😉

  42. Suhail.TV says:

Agag.. Hw u spent holy day.. GG involved ?

  43. agirlagunner says:

Wenger should surprise us with a really good signing. TV5 was quite the rabbit out of the hat, but if Gallas leaves, we need another no-nonsense and hard one.

As for Villa, awww. Shame he doesn’t want to move. Where will they slot him in though? If they’re looking for balance, I think, it’s their defense that needs to be sorted out.

Torres staying in Liverpool is tricky. What do the dippers have to play for? And with their massive debt, it would be suicide for them to splurge…

  44. agirlagunner says:

STV, I haven’t had a drop of alcohol since January. Just tanks of coffee. I slept mostly since work has been hell. And you? Off to vacation?

  45. Suhail.TV says:

Not yet agag. Just completed a 6 hr long exam today. And am on it since i want some relief ha ha…

  46. rico says:

agag, i havent had a drop since five minutes ago 😉

bloomin heck STV, thats a long exam 😦

I agree re TV agag, he was some signing, and especially for wenger, apart from Campbell on a free (first time) i dont think he’s signed a good one….

  47. agirlagunner says:

Well done, STV! Are you like taking the bar or the medical boards or something? That’s some exam! Bottoms up! Have a shot for me!!

Good for you, rico!! I overslept and missed this thingie at a local bar. Pfft.

  48. Suhail.TV says:

Rico.. lol.. I havent it since am hour ago.. That was on practicals and a bloody long one.. I hot it you’re off frequently for that ! ha ha ..

  49. Suhail.TV says:

    Got it not hot it

  50. agirlagunner says:

Hmmm. Is that why you pop off now and again, rico? A sip of the cooking sherry to forget Denilson’s last sideways pass? Hah.

  51. rico says:

    you two…. 🙂

No, i have chickens, two dogs and two guinea pigs who i love and need to care for, thats why i have to pop off, oh, and to shop, clean the home, do the ironing…… the list goes on, but i wish it was for a tipple 🙂 🙂

  52. rico says:

would take more than a sherry to forget denilson’s passing agag 😉 😉

  53. Suhail.TV says:

Ho.. Agag, i have it already.. For you.. Dont sleep too o much agag.. It gives too much dreams..

  54. Erick says:

  55. rico says:

STV, back in 1988, i had a massive exam to take, my career depended on it, a friend and i went out to the pub, then went to chapel, then snuck back into ‘school’ and got tiddled, then we studied…. I passed with flying colours 🙂 🙂

To this day, I dont know how…..

  56. agirlagunner says:

We have five cats and three dogs and I frequently feel like i’m earning just to pay for shots and meds and the occasional operation. But I love them to bits.

I haaaate ironing. The worst thing in the world.

  57. rico says:

  65. agirlagunner says:

Hey, Erick. Talking shop, and GG, and fantasies (Purchases who will greet you with Hola, Que tal? Me llamo Fernando Torres/David Villa.)

That’s a good story, rico. I had to tke a series of exams some years ago, and on the third exam weekend, my roommate had a panic attack 1 am-ish (and she’s unflappable) and I did not know what to do, but I convinced her that some fresh air and chocolates were all that we needed. We padded out of the hotel in sleepwear and bought some ferrero rocher. And when the results came out, she aced those exams.

  66. Suhail.TV says:

You got nice ideas agag.. The friend should remember you

  67. Erick says:

  69. agirlagunner says:

Rico, I have mongrels and a persian, two siameses, and 2 manxes. The dogs are named after football players and the cats after handbags. Haha.

Tough question, rico. If my cats understood football though, it would be an easy one.

Haha on the 88 exam, STV. You’re really young!!

  70. Suhail.TV says:

Agag rico off to get a shot again.. hi hi

  71. agirlagunner says:

Erick, I’m sort of really still holding out for a fantastic purchase. Then AW will announce the signing of another 15-year old. Good luck on finding the girl who’ll iron your shirts for you. That’s the most tedious thing on the planet.

  72. Erick says:

STV, Aw will give you a chance all season just impress in training ha ha AGAG can i get a phillipine(spelling) girl to do some ironing for me hook a brother up

Haha. STV, if you get to London, impress AW, are put in the reserves, then on the first team (since there will be injuries)— you have to distribute tickets. Save me one for the home game v. United.
