‘Heroes in waiting’ he said, but….

On a morning with not much gossip in the world of football, I thought I would reflect back on another article from Arsene Wenger written in 2003, a year that saw us beat sides like Manchester City 5-1 at Maine Road but then lose to Blackburn Rovers at their home ground 2-0.

The team that beat City was Taylor, Lauren, van Bronkhorst, Keown, Campbell, Gilberto, Vieira, Pires, Wiltord, Bergkamp and Henry. Substitutes for the day were Ray Parlour, Edu, Jeffers, Cygan, Warmuz.

I wish we still had a few like that playing for us today, not Jeffers, no, but a Vieira, Pires or Keown would be welcome and of course, so to would be Henry and Bergkamp…

Back in the same year though we started to hear from Arsene about how well the Youth Academy was doing and how important it was for the FUTURE of our club.

This is what he said,

‘I personally feel that we have about nine or ten players who are really close to the first team and to able to say that is fantastic’.

‘I am talking about the players who are aged between 18yrs and 21yrs. For example we have, David Bentley, Jeremie Aliadiere, Ryan Garry, Jerome Thomas, Sebastian Svard, Moritz Volz, Jermaine Pennant, Graham Stack, Kolo Toure and others too, there is also a young Swiss defender Philippe Senderos who will be joining us in the summer’.

‘When you look at that list there are ten or so players who are the top level, that is great for the future of our club and is a guarantee for us. The condition of our young players look tremendous.’

Arsene also said back then ‘I’m in a situation now where I can look at the younger players coming through, which I couldn’t do so much when I first arrived at the club, I had to buy players.’

All very interesting I am sure, but apart from Kolo Toure and David Bentley – just where are the players now?

Aliadiere – Middlesbrough

Ryan Garry – Bournemouth

Jerome Thomas – West Bromich Albion

Sebastian Svard – Roda JC

Moritz Volz – No club

Jermaine Pennant –  Real Zaragoza

Graham Stack – Hibernian

Phillipe Senderos – I don’t think anyone really knows what’s going on with him.

My point is, in 2003 Arsene Wenger was telling the world that we had so many play ready to play for the first team. Well, not many of those he bragged about back then went on to play for us on a regular basis, only Toure and Senderos and I wouldn’t call either of them a hero.

Has anything really changed since then? – Are there a few Heroes in waiting right now, or will they go the same way as some of the players above?

  3. rico says:

morning ptts, but we know about them, what about beyond??

  4. Invincible says:

Toure, key member of Invincible team – not a hero, please!

  5. pilgrimage to the title says:

barazite, coquelin, bartley, aneke, eastmond, lansbury… you cant look beyond 18 year olds as you get into the realms speculation. the youth policy is not something to worry about. We are now in the reverse of the article where we this time need to blend experience into youth, we will find out if it work better than the reverse or senderos’s left foot.

  6. rico says:

morning invincible, is Toure in the list of where are they nows????

  7. rico says:

pttt – not looking beyond 18yr olds, just asking people who they think could be at our club for a long time and be big hits – rather than show promise only to leave having been not good enough…

for wenger the summer must be like his first, he has to buy…

  8. Erick says:

Howdy the youth must be mixed with some experience or else we will just be another club wishing to win trophies

  9. Erick says:

For me Wilshere, Eastmond, Merida are looking promising

  10. pilgrimage to the title says:

i agree he has to buy, and that is blending experience with the youthful talent we have. But the clubs youth system is top 5 in the world without question, in terms of infrastructure and current talent, so unlike the youth teams of the past there is genuine talent there to play.

This is where your argument becomes grey, because on one hand you want there to be players in the youth team who will become legends and on the other hand you want to buy players that halts the progress of the youth.

… our squad down to the youth team will grow to be great world beaters. But we need those players to show us how to win.

  11. rico says:

Morning Erick, sadly it seems Merida is off 😦

pttt – no, not grey at all – its all about the right balance, denilson, almunia, diaby, silvestre, fabianski need shipping out – replace them with great players and still have the youth coming through…

i want us to win, youth alone will not do that… nor will having sub standard players..

  12. Since1979 says:

We must sign some experience this summer to help bring on the youngsters cause at the moment the youngsters have very little help from top experienced players, Arshavin said that we needed top players and how right he was he may speak to much but he always seems to say what every fan is thinking.

  13. rico says:

morning 1979, spot on about both, how can younger players learn from players who have not ‘been there and done it’ – Sol and Silvestre apart…

  14. pilgrimage to the title says:

im goin to defend some players-

DENILSON is the most frustrating player at times and it seems as if he is trying to become gilberto. When he first appeared on the scene he looked like the new Cesc, but alas, i think he was intimidated by Cesc’s youth and ability so decided that he would never make it in this team playing the same role as cesc. Despite this, he will grow into a very intelligent midfield engine who players the simple game, a good squad player regardless. HE ALSO WAS ONE OF THE ONLY PLAYERS WHO HAD THE BALLS TO PLAY ARSENAL FOOTBALL AGAINST BARCA.

FABIANSKI- if you sat thierry henry on the bench for 4 months then told him to go and score goals, what do you think would happen? Fabianski needs a chance to be no.1 for a bit to get into a rhythm. It cannot be denied that he a a good shot stopper and his enthusiasm to play sweeper keeper and to come for every ball will with a run of games become sharper and his decision making will become clearer… hes a good player.

Diaby- The one difference between him and a good player is his vision, i question whether he will ever develope this.

Sylvie, Big Al- Cursed need to fuck off now! i bet their wages is huge as well!

  15. kuehlapis says:

well i would say szcesny is one for the future too ^^

  16. rico says:

pttts – do you need confidence just to catch a ball when your occupation is a EPL Premiership Goal Keeper?

Denilson – the crab, side ways and backwards passing, scores the odd great goal and has the odd very good game.

Diaby – too many times does he bomb forward and end up losing the ball. he has not a clue when to release it, when to see the best option for the pass and he forgets that he is allowed to shoot…

  17. JonJon says:

kolo was not a key member of the invincible team

  18. rico says:

morning kue – agree about chesney…

Morning JJ, hope all is going well

  19. Edmond Dantes says:

    Morning all

Wilshere is looking like the real deal. Watched a few Bolton games of late and I was impressed with him.

Does anybody think he will be a first-teamer next season or still be at Bolton?

There are some things he can learn at Bolton that Arsenal can’t teach. The so-called “dark arts” of the game. Mind you, Coyle’s teams usually play good football.

  20. rico says:

Hi Edmond, I think its time for Jack to play more a role in the first team, he has showed at bolton he is ready for the tough games.

  21. Edmond Dantes says:

Rico. I would like to see him in our first team next season. It also might depend on who Arsene brings in this summer.

  22. JonJon says:

wenger will sell jack and play denilson and diaby still next year..

things are topsy turvet this wek rico but still hanging in there…

  23. Edmond Dantes says:

JJ. Arsene has been very consistent in the last 5 years…

ie. Never failing to let us down on a consistent basis.

He’s just testing our faith though.

  24. Edmond Dantes says:

*Let me re-phrase. It sounds ambiguous. What I meant was that he always lets us down.

  25. rico says:

JJ, you better be joking, i think i would end up in the priory if he did that!!

  26. rico says:

real sorry to hear that jj, big cyber hug coming your way…

  27. Edmond Dantes says:

He’s (AW) succeeding in separating all the believers from the non-believers. You’ll find all the infidels down at “Le Emirates” blog.

  29. Edmond Dantes says:

Ok people I’ve got lunch now. My entree of foie gras and brioche has just arrived. I’ll be back soon.

  30. rico says:

Edmond, leave out the le emirates please….

  31. Armourist says:

To be honest it just proves that the judgement of what constitutes a good young player was wrong at that stage in 2003, it appears to be better now, but unlike Barca’s academy it hasn’t had the time to make those errors and start building blueprints of the players that need to be coming thru, though the attack side of the team seems to be further ahead of the defensive side.

I honestly think that the team reflects Arsene persona, I would love to see him swallow his pride and ask graham back as a defensive coach.

  32. rico says:

    Hi Armourist, or Adams, Keown…

  33. Suhail.TV says:

Arsenal need a psychologyst too.. Mentally they are unfit contrary to wenger’s say.

  34. Suhail.TV says:

The medical team need to be some good..

  35. Armourist says:

I don’t think the medical team is the problem, we are missing a layer of players for the level the team trains at.

If they train as hard as they do, they need adequate backup not youth team players as back up, I think the depth of the squad in relation to how we train and the games we play need to be looked at, rotating players might also reduce wear and tear.

We have effectively done an Aston Villa and run out of steam just before the finish line.

  36. rico says:

Afternoon STV, that will come from winning a trophy and getting the bug, getting them to win something first though is the tough part

  37. Suhail.TV says:

Afternoon rico, from where we get some winning mentality.. Why cant we win after lost one.. We.. lacking some winners like u said.

  38. Erick says:

Armourist and its not the first season the steam ends in the most crucial part of the season. STV whats up

  39. Erick says:

We need to win something even if its the carling but Aw throws it away 🙂

  40. Suhail.TV says:

Erick, fine? Exams intruding on life..

  41. Suhail.TV says:

“For me carling cup is exclusively for youngsters and fa cup is some thing to win.”

  42. Suhail.TV says:

Am leaving .. Bye for all..

  43. Erick says:

    Enjoy STV good luck mate

  44. Erick says:

Arshavin back for citeh oh Song???

  45. rico says:

    Sorry guys, busy old day…

AA hopes to back, not sure on Song Erick, have you heard anything??

  46. Erick says:

Nothing Rico but am crossing my fingers still we need him baaaaaaaaaaaad

  47. rico says:

too true we do Erick, hope Robin is fit to start to…

  48. Erick says:

AA and RVP can be vital we can’t afford to loose Rico we need to go for it

  49. rico says:

we will win Erick, i bet you a milkshake 🙂

  50. K-TR7 says:

    Wassup!miss me rico?afternoon erick.whats new?

  51. rico says:

Where you been ktr7, every time i mention wordpress you leave, of course i missed you ….

  52. W.A.T.H says:

    That’s another bet ur loosing Rico…. 😛

  53. rico says:

😆 Wath, good afternoon to you, where you been…

  54. K-TR7 says:

I will sort it out ASAP rico.AW should’ve learnt a couple of things from mourinho…

  55. W.A.T.H says:

    Been busy Rico…… am sure u didn’t miss me….! 😉

    How’s pups..?

  56. W.A.T.H says:

Need to stuff my face back in a bit….! Oh…. am thirsty as well 😉

  57. Erick says:

Did I hear milkshake 🙂 Sailor you know i never loose am that luck K-tr7 Barca were there for the taking we failed we needed to be a bit physical and commited Mourinho for Arsenal

  58. JonJon says:

rico wenger has no patience with english players and he treats them all like shit

name me one english prospect that has made it at arsenal???

besides cole the answer is none…and he was he was treated like shit if we are honest…we may all take the piss now about him crashing his car over 5grand but he was the worlds best leftback and still is..we should have give him the money…

the only reason theo gets all the games he does is because he cost wenger 12mil and wenger wont back down …but if theo came from the actual arsenal academy he would have been shown the door by now…

  59. Erick says:

    Lucky I meant

  60. rico says:

wath, they are miserable, whinging, sleepy, grumpy, in fact name the seven dwarfs and our two pups are them!!!

  61. W.A.T.H says:

JJ, President, chairman and head bottle washer of the Theo Walcott fan club……….. 🙂

  62. JonJon says:

and no the medical team aint the problem..

    the problem is

    A..we over train our players

B…we dont have decent backup in certain areas so some players are expected to play 70 games every season, when they pick up a niggle wenger rushes them back because he hasnt got the depth he bangs on about and it starts all over again..which is why our defenders, cesc, and rvp never make a full season..

  63. JonJon says:

im also head cheer leader.. 😉

  64. K-TR7 says:

Did you know barca ran 10km less at the sansiro compared to at the emirates?inter’s tactical discipline and quick breaks were admirable…wonder if aw was watching…

  65. JonJon says:

i thinkthat was more down to the fact barca had to travel by coach to milan…

cant be nice being cramped up for 20 hrs before a game of footy

  66. W.A.T.H says:

Tell you what K-TR7 hope Wenger wasn’t watching that Balotelli crap artist cos that is one lazy fucker with a serious chip on his shoulder and no fuckin way do we need another arsehole like that in an Arsenal shirt…!.
CHeer leader JJ…. well we know u look good in ya pvc eh mate 🙂

  67. JonJon says:

lol i was just about to write that wath

and i agree we dont want ballotelli…or watever he called…we want worktate not attitude..

  68. K-TR7 says:

Inter are very well drilled in terms of organisation, with three quick forwards they could break with pace.i think aw has the same idea re chamack, rvp and AA.perez and madrid mob must be really angry with themselves by letting sneijder go for kaka, what a player sneijder is and could be in the final against robben…

  69. W.A.T.H says:

I cannot for the life of me understand why we never went for Robben……………! Pure quality…!

Crapotelli I reckon he called JJ…. what an attitude the little arsehole has…! Not surprised Maureenya is happy 2 let him go, surprised he not wrung his neck…!

  70. JonJon says:

i bet wenger is kicking himself sneijder went for 11mil

    i am

  71. JonJon says:

im not surprised they boo him

he wouldnt last 2 mins at emirates…

he wouldnt have lasted 2 secs at highbury

if wenger signs him then i wont class that as the signing we are looking for

  72. JonJon says:

yeah inter are well drilled…anyside under jose are well drilled but to be fair barca looked knackered

  73. W.A.T.H says:

JJ, Imagine AA – RVP – Robben up front for us…? Now thats a forward line…!

  74. W.A.T.H says:

If Wenger signed Crapotelli I’ll be counting the days til his first strop…. I do not want the fella end of…!

  75. JonJon says:

sniejder and robben would have fitted our style perfect..but wenger didnt want to kill the likes of denilson and diaby..but they perfectly capable of killing thmselves…

i wonder out of the four who actually goes to the world cup..

  76. JonJon says:

with a midfield of cesc song and sneijder…

  77. K-TR7 says:

WATH-hold your horses mate!that has got to be pure fantasy footy, even barca would be envious!the dutch will have rvp, sneijder, vdv, robben and elia at the wc!pure fantasy!to be fair rvp,AA and chamack is a complete attack in each and every attacking aspect…

  78. W.A.T.H says:

No way we’d buy sneijder him and RVP hate each other 😉

I’d be happy with that Sissoko fella we looking at in France !! Another big lump next to Song that allows Cesc free reign…!

  79. W.A.T.H says:

It’s not fantasy though is it K-TR7 Robben was available and as usual we had our thumbs up our arses…! So it would of been possible…!

  80. JonJon says:

yeah i know wath thats prob the reason why wenger didnt go for him..

but do we put the team first or a player???

cole and sherigham hated eachother for years but fergie dint give a toss cos they were class and they won the lot

  81. W.A.T.H says:

Again still think Sneijder very similar to what we have mate…. I want a big fuck off lump central midfiled who kicks lumps out of ppl wins headers tackles and can play a bit….! that with a similar type at centre half and any goalie who can actually catch the ball and we A for away…!

  82. JonJon says:

i still want 2 of them midfielders WATH

    and two of those cb’s

    and that keeper..

but id have sniejder too 🙂

it all about squad depth 🙂

  83. W.A.T.H says:

If AW sold either diaby or denilson I think I’d die of heart failure from shock so noway will he buy 2 for central midfield…! maybe 2 at the back depending on who we lose and how many and don’t forget Djourou will be like a new signing 😉

as for Goalie my gran said she fancies a go….! Anything’s better than what we got…!

  84. K-TR7 says:

The allianz arena is state of the art…the problem with robben is he like rvp often ends at the sickbay where our little morzart has some furniture over there i heard…

  85. JonJon says:

we are being silly anyway mate 🙂

    he wont sign anyone

chamaks our lot and thata only cos he free

  86. JonJon says:

    id like gourcuff too

  87. JonJon says:

    thats true ktr

robbens ankles are made of glass, he’d get no protaction playing for arsenal, he didnt even get it at chelsea

  88. W.A.T.H says:

Overmars had glass knees he served us ok for a few seasons JJ…………

Yep a few players who don’t spend a month in the sick bay after a game would be a good start….!.

We’ll see……….. All hyperthetical anyway cos as u say JJ we’ll end up buying 5 16yr olds with HUGE potential cos we got such a great squad…. bla bla bla bla…………… Ok I’m off got a few things 2 do may catch ya lata if not see ya 2moro…! Be good…!.

  89. Erick says:

JJ and Wath you guys are funny but Jose knows the game he make 3 or 4 signing and uses what he gets so well tried of the triangles we need to win from the Carling cup to the champions league AW shld respect tradition of this cups

  90. Erick says:

Crapotelli ha ha ha ha Wath do you have a dictionary of funnies cheers mate

  91. W.A.T.H says:

Erick u bandit…………. vodka milkshake works like a charm mate go try 🙂

    C’ya soon….!

  92. JonJon says:

    seeya wath

yeah erick weve said it for a while..its time wenger took those cups more seriously..if we want to breed a winning mentality then we must start winning things..

the PL and cl are too hard…we are trying to walk before we can crawl…

if we won one of the ‘little’ cups the side would know what its like to win and get the taste for it

i still think we’d need signings to win those cups though 😉

  93. Suhail.TV says:

Evening jj… You make a point. I still con not forgive for that squad fielded against chelsea in carling cup final. Did wenger really think of winning with that against chelsea..

  94. K-TR7 says:

I think a strong cm to partner song to allow us to play both AA and cesc in the middle in a 4-3-1-2 which would allow us to be compact in big games with cesc abit deeper to dictate the tempo…

  95. Erick says:

True JJ its about time AW listened up or goes home we need take games seriously even its a pre-season any news on Song JJ

  96. Erick says:

K-TR7 nice Idea but Diaby can’t defend to save his life

  97. JonJon says:

    evening suhail..

the problem wenger had with that final was that it was the kids that got us there…

so wenger was in a dilema..does he reward the kids for getting to the final but lose the trophy…

or does he go all out and field his best 11 and go for it…

sometimes wenger needs to be more ruthless…looking back in hindsight its easy to say now that he should have fielded his best side as we didnt know we were gonna go 5 years without a trophy..

nonetheless..wenger needs to be more ruthless and put the club first and not his experiment..

  98. Suhail.TV says:

Ktr7, toulalan could be a great addition.. Is’t it..

  99. JonJon says:

if that situation ever arose again i would definately play our 1st 11..

we should learn from our mistakes..unfortunately history tells us wenger never does..

the domestic cups will always remain an experiment under wengers reign

  100. JonJon says:

we definately need another midfeider ktr

ive said it for ages we need a box to box duracell bunny who can roll up his sleeves get stuck in and cover the gaps left by the full backs..

we dont necesarliy need anyone skilfil..of course he must be able to pass a ball but speed, endurance and workrate are the attributes we lack in cm

    we never replaced flamini..

  101. K-TR7 says:

Erick-i said we need a new cm ‘flamini type’ for big games letting diaby play vs defensive sides/cc/fa cups where he would learn slowly…ribery has just got sent off!

  102. JonJon says:

    no news on song erick

but i wouldnt risk any of song Aa or rvp v citeh..

we are not going to win that one anyway..we dont have the pace or workrate to deal with tevez or bellamy and our geriatric cb’s will get crushed

we should let them rest against citeh and bring them back FULLY fit for the last two games..get 6 points and cement third

  103. JonJon says:

ribery tackle a bad one..deserved to go..

diaby should be sold..he doesnt have it between the ears..if wenger cant drill it into him in the four years hes been here he never will

diaby 24..hes not a kid..hes passed the phase of learning the basics..

  104. Suhail.TV says:

True jj.. If some one like denilsen diaby and almunias fails to perform in a match and drags the team in to danger he will gives them another chance, if they again did so he gives them another chance… till some one of them gives a good game.. and them their places secured. But it is their mistakes and lack of commitment that cost us (esp diaby) . He is not pragmatic enough these days as his old days.. If a 4 3 3 formation did’t work he though continues to stick with it. A mid field of denilsen diaby eboue is not a great at all..

  105. K-TR7 says:

AW has been quiet all week…hope he lost his voice screaming at the players after 3 losses in a row…

  106. JonJon says:

we played a 442 last year with denilson diaby and eboue for about 20 games last year…

yes we didnt lose but we couldnt score either so what makes wenger think they will do better in 433…

same creative boringness but more goals conceeded cos 433 gives up more space..

  107. K-TR7 says:

    Robben just scored a beauty!

  108. JonJon says:

deflected of mullers head..lloris read the innitial shot and would have saved it without diving but got wrong footed..

  109. JonJon says:

but if you dont shoot you dont score 😉

  110. rico says:

Robben, just how good is Robben??

Just how unlucky was Toutelan (spelling)

  111. JonJon says:

    evening rico

thought id missed you.. cyber hug accepted..

    robbens class..ran the show

  112. rico says:

i have been doing tomorrows post, its got nothing to do denilson or diaby 🙂 😉

I hope we prize Loris from Lyon, he is world class…

  113. K-TR7 says:

    @rico spot on!lloris is quality!just what the doctor ordered…

  114. rico says:

    hi jj

the dogs have been demanding then one of them knocked a glass over, and it was full of wine 😦 😦

big huff when he went off, he’s not on a free at the end of the season is he?? 😉

  115. K-TR7 says:

@rico spot on!lloris is quality!just what the doctor ordered…watching robben run the show makes you think of what would’ve been with rvp+AA…

  116. JonJon says:

ive been watching lloris properly tonight for first time..

    i like him

    unlucky for the goal..

need to see more of him though..hes probably valued at 20+mil so id like to see him properly before i bang his drum..

  117. rico says:

i havent watched all this game, but, when did you last see any of our players show this kind of fight untiul the end….

ktr7, he and robben would be good to start with… 😉

  118. rico says:

last second slight deflection jj? even then he was cm’s away, he looks really good –

    not a lot better than almunia, but better 😉 😉 😉 ;0

  119. JonJon says:

robbens the proper winger/striker we need at the club.can play in the middle and take on the wings and more importantly score goals

we have none..and theo isnt nowhere near ready..

    robben is like overmars..

i think WATH was right, i think we could of got some serious seasons out of robben

    i really like lahm too..

  120. JonJon says:

yeah rico it was a slight deflection of muller..

he was already on his way to save the shot but got wrong footed..

and your puppies need to behave..

you know WATH gonna turn up now.. ;)its like the magic word to that bloke

  121. rico says:

lahm?? didn’t see him, was he bayerns keeper?

just hope the tiff with van gael is the end then and robben walks, straight to the emirates… 😉

  122. rico says:

😆 JJ, thankfully he’s out for the night, probably recording a follow up to YMCA 😉 😉

All bloody night JJ all bloody night and just for attention!! Little *******’S

  123. rico says:

I would rather Robben than Ribery..

  124. JonJon says:

    managers like that rico

they like it when a good player hates coming off..it shows passion..

thanks jj, didn’t watch enough 😦

i have to go now, but…. How come Townsend says Ribery’s tackle was a disgrace, dreadful, leg breaking etc etc…..

Yet, our players who have suffered horrific injuries after worse tackles, have to listen to –

‘ I am sure there was no intent, it was late but not as bad as it looked’ etc etc…

    what a bloody joke!!

  127. K-TR7 says:

AA should be running the show robben style…combine with rvp…
