Wojciech Szczęsny – will he be our No1 next season?

This morning’s post is about Wojciech Szczęsny, or Chesney , as he is referred to as its easier to spell.

Who he is?

Born in Warsaw, the Son of a Polish legend “Maciej Szczęsny” – The only Polish player to win four league’s title for four different clubs in the Polish League.

In the Summer of 2006 Chesney signed for The Arsenal, he had turned out for former side Legia Warsaw aged just 15 years old.
Liam Brady managed to snap up the youngster after fighting through a mass maul to get him due to his outstanding performances for Legia.

the 12th December 2009, where he made a number of saves to keep out Leeds United and was given the Man of the Match.
During the same month, Arsenal agreed to extend the loan for a end of season.

How Much Do I Rate Him?

He is a tall, strong, commanding goal keeper and a superb reader of the game, any saves he cant hold he pushes away from danger and
he’s up quick for rebounds. His positioning and speed across his line is quality but then i’m only going from you tube and second hand knowledge.

Many share the view that Chesney is one of most exciting goalkeeping talents in Europe.
He seems a level header good kid as well.

Quote’s from Brentford fans this season

‘He is going to be superb for you, At league1 level he`s fantastic just needs to work on keeping his concentration for a full 90 minutes but commands the box well and his reflexes are brilliant and he gives confidence to his defenders…Arsene just needs to let him stay at Brentford for another season or two so that we can work the rough edges off him for you’ 16/03/10

Another said

‘Give him 1 or 2 more years and then I believe you will see him playing week in week out for arsenal, he needs more experience and chucking him in the 1st team would be too quick for a goalkeeper who has mainly played the likes of MK Dons and Wycombe instead of Manchester United and Chelsea – Arsene Wenger would be making the right choice by loaning him to us for next season as he will play constantly and have a chance of the play-offs’ 16/03/10

Sounds like the just want to keep him and I don’t blame them.

Chesney has very different ideas, he has said his intention is to return to Arsenal, and next season he aims to take the number one shirt off of Almunia’s back, so Brentford, you have no chance!

Wojciech Szczęsny seems a very special talent. Finally we may just have a big strong tall man keeping our goal, who actually looks like he knows what he’s doing!

Is he too young? I don’t think so, after all Iker Casillas took the no1 shirt for Real Madrid when he was just 20 years old, the rest as they say, is history!

    Morning peeps

  2. rico says:

Thanks for the post rsd, its a nice one about a very talented young goal keeper.

And he plays for Arsenal, we are well overdue a top class keeper and could just be the one. I watched you BBC i/v and video of him, he looks more confident at his young age than our current 1&2..

  3. I’d like to see him go loan to a Championship or bottom half prem team. He’s developing well but needs a bit more experience There is no doubt he is the next great keeper at the club and I haven’t heard this much hype over a keeper for a long time but he has to be nurtured the right way. The last thing we’d want is to kill his confidence while he is still developing.

  4. stonroy says:

I think next season he needs a loan at either a top championship side or someone coming up to the premier league. I think he is ready for that and in a season or two he’ll be ready for the Arsenal.

  5. rico says:

Morning rant, to be fair, I can’t see the boss throwing him into the first team whilst he is so young, it cant be plain sailing where he is, but the reviews coming from Brentford are all good. It wouldn’t surprise me if he stays there for another year.

Dont want him to, I hope he is at least our No2 next year and gets to play in the FA Cup and CC..

  6. Simon says:

we’ve got to try him next season, if not, buy a new keeper. Almunia and Fabianski are way too error prone. Manone had a few good games, but I’ve seen him make some howlers too.

  7. rico says:

    morning stonroy

  8. rico says:

Brentford are sixteenth in league one and have no chance of going up – staying at Brentford next season may not be such a good idea

  9. rico says:

Morning simon, my preference is as yours, but a great keeper who would be good for two years, and Chesney no2

  10. Manx Gooner says:

Just need to tie him to a long-term contract (until he’s 30) then loan him out until he’s 28 or so. Then he can make his mistakes for other clubs whilst learning his trade.

Same goes for our young centre-halfs, but in their case, contract until 27 and loaned out until 25.

The days of bringing these vital positions through the youth ranks are sadly over as the stakes are just too high.

If Tony Adams was starting his career now, he wouldn’t make it for Arsenal as the fans would get on his back for the mistakes he made whilst he learnt how to defend.

  11. rico says:

Morning Manx, welcome to Avenell Road, not sure if he needs to be loaned out til that old 😉

  12. rico says:

I think rsd makes a good point about Casilla’s playing for Real Madrid at such a young age.

If a player has the ability and strength to perform, age is not really a problem.

The big thing is what happens if a team put a few past him in any one game, at a young age is he mentally ready??

  13. Willy Young says:

Make him no 2 for the first half of season to play in Emirates Cup CC and early FaC then loan him out

please sell one of Almunia or Fab or maybe both and replace with a top notch keeper

when you look at the amount of players we have out on loan we have a bloody huge squad!! No wonder our wage bill is so high ?

  14. rico says:

Morning Willy, welcome to Avenell Road

Fourteen I think is the total… its about time those are not going to have a future are sold on, use the money to buy David Villa…

  15. Damian says:

He looks great but i would leave him 4 at least 2 more years & bring him back almost ready to take over at a young age a game like Fabianski had could ruin him

  16. rico says:

Morning Damien, half the problem is Al and Fab have been poor and we are desperate to see a better goal keeper..

  17. chris says:

    manx gooner is mad

  18. rico says:

    Hi chris, steady on… 😉

  19. rico says:

D Day for the CL today then, just be glad when the draw is done..

  20. morning all
    just catching up

  21. rico says:

morning rsd, you have a few comments to answer 😉

  22. look at cesc i know the confidence is a big part of keeping and when its just you and the line your mistakes are magnified “tech 9 or ches” has made a couple v not hove but the game before and let in a couple.

  23. great post im sure AW has this in mind.

  24. if you good enough your old enough is how the saying goes i tinks…

    right im here now
    soz chores,
    bad night rain
    and emotive post… B&Y 😉

  25. clockendjim says:

Please Mr Wenger sign Joe Hart for next season; he is the best young (and English) keeper in the PL. Bring back Chesney as No2 and carefully feed him in ie Carling Cup and we would have two really top notch No. 1s.
My further plea is to offload Almunia & Fabianski; neither would get near to ANY PL team let alone a Chelsea or a Man Utd.

  26. or make him you only learn from your mistake fab wont pic up pass back ever again
and will be aware that a cross can come in behind you

    it’s behind you flappy
    yes judy

  27. do you really think shitty would sell him to us scrap that there so thick they brought barndoor and kolo for 40mil

  28. Baz says:

Casillas was only 17 when he made it into the Real Madrid first team.

  29. rico says:

I can’t cope with the ‘reply box’ rsd, it sends me crazy, have tried to remove it but can’t find how to
    😦

  30. rico says:

Morning Baz, welcome to Avenell Road, I will leave the author to respond to that one 😉

  31. rico
go to comments page on the top right
    under turbo next to help
    press screen options
    uncheck “in response to”
then i shall pester you know more

  32. jonners says:

Saw Chesney against the Baggies earlier this season. He was very impressive. That game could have gone either way until Thomas got himself sent off for slapping LJW. The difference imo was Chesney, I remember clearly three very good saves which I don’t think our numbers 1 & 2 would have got anywhere near.

  33. baz source me
    correct me if im wrong
He was first called up to the first team on the 27 November 1997 at age 16 to face Rosenborg in UEFA Champions League 1997–98, but it wasn’t until the 1998–99 season that he debuted in the senior side, substituting Bodo Illgner. By the next season, he relegated Illgner to the bench and became first choice. In 2000, he became the youngest-ever goalkeeper to ever play in a Champions League final when Real Madrid defeated Valencia 3-0 just four days after his nineteenth birthday.

Casillas lost his place in the side to backup César Sánchez after a patch of bad form during the 2001–02 campaign,

Casillas lost his place in the side to backup César Sánchez after a patch of bad form during the 2001–02 campaign, but redeemed himself when Sánchez suffered an injury in the last minutes of 2002 Champions League final match. Casillas came on and pulled off several brilliant saves to deny a rampant Bayer Leverkusen the Champions League crown. The Whites won 2-1 and the twenty-year-old has maintained the number 1 shirt ever since.

So when he was 19/20 he took the #1 shirt not when did he make his debut

  34. rico says:

Thanks rsd, all done – i owe you one 😉

  35. sorry baz i didn’t see that avenell have re edited the piece and put debut sorry mate :-0
    stop ruining perfect roadsters 😉

  36. rico says:

Morning jonners, welcome to Avenell Road, does his age worry you at all??

  37. MikE says:

brentford are my ‘little’ team and he is the best goalie to play for the bees in the past 40 years imho and he came out number one in a poll by brentford fans too! and brentford have had some decent keepers over the years including parks, ex man u.

but he is young and he has gone slightly off the boil these past two weeks – he cost brentford two goals last saturday when he did a ‘fabianski’.

he will be the arsenal ‘keeper for ten years or more but isn’t ready yet. maybe in 2 or 3 years.

google ‘griffin park gazette’ to read dozens of comments on him. or better still, go watch brentford ( south ealing station on the piccadilly line)and make your own mind up!!! you might even enjoy the thrills and spills of division one footie for a change – but no prawn sandwiches or £35 bottles of chardonay!

  38. rico says:

have sorted the age thing rsd, check its ok now please? it was my fault.. 😦

  39. MikE says:

PS He failed to deal with a couple of high balls —-calling them ‘a fabianski’ is very unfair on him. Sorry Chesney!!!!

  40. JonJon says:

    morning all…

manx gooner made my morning…lol top comment..

i honestly dont know much about chesney…and in all honesty i dont think alot of ppl did…

its one of those things where the GK situation has become that bad at arsenal where we are clutching at straws and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon of this kid who hasnt even played in the PL yet…

he maybe good and everyone can wax all the lyrical they want about him but what we really need is a top class international keeper whos played at the top level for years…

keepers are a funny position cos i dont think theres that many good ones out there anymore…the balls nowadays are like them plastic flyaways ones that change direction about 4 times in 10 yards…putting this lad in at the deep end would be a big risk cos he’ll be learning his trade and weve done too much of that recently..its the reason why we dont win anything..

but going for somebody like buffon and letting this kid be no.2 for a few years wouldnt be a bad thing..let him play in the cups and learn from one of the best..

  41. jonners says:

His age does a bit. The Brentford fan is right in that he needs to learn to concentrate for the full 90+ minutes our matches seem to last but as a prospect he is much nearer taking over the #1 jersey than Fabianski.

  42. just to while down the last hour

RT Staff Sgt Kim Hughes received George Cross ystrday, just read his story….quite an extraordinarily brave man

    http://bit.ly/b9khyq

    mornin jj

  43. JonJon says:

    morning mate..
    nice topic for post..

    yeah thats a brave dude..
they all brave dudes…the sooner they come home the better..

i tend not to get too involved in all the foreign affairs though..my views are quite radical and once i start i know i’ll offend so i keep quiet…

  44. dont worry the will be home for xmas
my wife ‘s BF hubby is organising the movements so get a up todate pic on it

  45. K-TR7 says:

    Morning bloggers.

  46. morning ktr7
Lool RT @Goonerere Who will Chelsea get in the draw, oh fuck, I forgot.

  47. JonJon says:

    morning ktr7

    draws edging closer..still nervous?

  48. Andrew says:

He wont be our No.1 next year
He wont be our no.1 for atleast 3-4 years so stop getting so excited.
He’s doing good in league one after that he will go to a championship side and after that a EPL side and then Wenger will decide whether he’s good enough to start as our no.1.
Not before that so stop being so unrealistic

  49. K-TR7 says:

JJ-After sleeping like a baby the nerves have calmed down.i see us getting bordeaux, mancs getting lyon, inter v barca and Cmoscow v bayern.whatever happens, bring it on!

  50. rico says:

    Welcome to Avenell Road Andrew,

    Morning JJ and KTR7

  51. rico says:

Come on then guys, game time, prediction on who we are going to draw, NOT who we want us to draw…

I am going with Inter to come out of the pot for us

    Barca for the Mancs

  52. simon says:

Casillas was in the Madrid first team from the age of 17… not 20.
If you’re good enough you’re old enough

  53. JonJon says:

    thats the spirit…

we want the mancs to get moscow or inter…either of those ties will drain them for the pl run in..

nows the time to get lucky

  54. JonJon says:

    morning rico…

    frnchies

  55. rico says:

  82. JonJon says:

    we’ll take barca…

trust me..its inter and mancs we needed to avoid..the tactial teams

  83. this what we want a real test not someone who gona sit back and try and defend inter in semi and utd in final pos we’re on our way

  84. rico says:

no one will give us a cat in hell chance to go through, just like when we drew Real and Milan, we are never better than when we are the under dogs, can’t wait for the first leg, we have every chance to winn this this….

After we do, Cesc will know why he should stay put!

got friends for lunch, be back a bit later….

revenge for 2006 will be so so sweet….

Messi will be injured too before the matches, he is due a torn hamstring 😉 😉

  86. JonJon says:

    yeah rsd

a proper game of footy..no tactics..just attack eachother..

    we got a great chance..

  87. raif says:

hey hey i think we can have barca,, and just imagine Cesc Getting the winning goal..

  88. JonJon says:

i dont like the first game at home though..

dont think either will be goaless…

    first leg 3-2 second 2-2…go through 5-4 😉

  89. you know it gona be 1-0 at home jj and 0-0 in camp nou
am so tempted to book the flight will have to talk to osasuna and see if he has room were on our way
