The Eve of Destruction..

I was not going to put this post on just yet but as it was topical  I have gone ahead and done it..

I have always had a small piece of admiration for Manchester City’s fans, they have to live in the shadow of their glorious neighbours since Man U got promoted to the old first division in the mid seventies. The only high point I can remember from City was reaching the FA cup final in 82’ish.

They was getting 25,000 supporters at home games in the second and third Leagues, but now they have gone down in my estimation. They have turned into the Northern Chavs..  Talking like thay deserve this influx of money.

These players that go to Man City are signing their career death warrant.. Okay they will be rich and  I am jealous,  but the empty feeling when they look back on their career and know they never won the medals, just 10 mins here and there as a sub.

The way I see it I am proud of the way Arsenal are running things.. we could do it 3 ways. Get a Sugar Daddy, keep heading further and further in debt and hope winning the League helps bail you out .. Or the Arsenal way.. I see this backing as a form of cheating from a sporting perspective

I think it will go back their are only so many silly cups to win.. When the richest has won them all year after year the other teams will go skint because of the lack of interest from their fans. Also some clubs are trying to keep up with the ‘Jones’s’ by borrowing, this is something that I don’t think Arsene or Arsenal are prepared to do, this has got to be a better way in the long term but it is also a dangerous game as we need to stay competitive, some fans are also not very understanding when it comes to this policy.. I can foresee the day when the big teams will have no competition so football at the top level will have gone playing to empty stadiums.
To me it’s like playing monopoly with 3 friends and one is being fed the finance under the table to buy the hotels in Mayfair. I know it’s business at the end of the day, but it is a business that prays on fans loyalty and morals.
If you have the morals of a cuckoo you would be prepared to win at all costs. Not for me I am afraid I like football, sport and sport should always be played on an even playing field. Or winning is shallow and meaningless. Like hiring a Ferarri and pretending It’s yours for the night to impress the girls. You are shallow and you are not living in the real world, you are cheating yourself in the end.

I want to see City fall on their asses and every player that signs for them to fail, I believe that the only reason John Terry never went there was because someone sat him down and said long term you could be the future manager of Chelsea (like that other tosser Alan Shearer was a messiah at Newcastle) long term you would be better off staying, but he kept his gob shut for ten days though.. and his image is tarnished.
It’s okay saying Man City are alright, no threat to us,  but wait until they steal Jack Wilshere off of us, Don’t say it won’t happen, If he is offered £250,000 a week most people would think about it. .Okay it may not be Jack.. but it will be one of our favourites.. Man City’s owners can afford to pay all their players a million pounds a week and not bat an eyelid, just put the price of oil up half a cent..
In fact Man City owners can probably afford to pay every player in La liga, The Premiership and Serie A  a million pounds a week but where does that leave the game of football?

As I said last night the day we get taken over is the day I stop supporting Arsenal in the way I do now, I support the solidarity amongst the fans the fact that the club need our money to survive,
What some are really supporting in a lot of cases now is a gangsters plaything and to be honest that is not something I want to be a part of.

The very heart of football has been slowly eroded as far as I am concerned, bit by bit, the game I loved as a child has been ruined by money and the day is drawing nearer that it knocks on our door..

Man City F A Cup was 1981, & they lost the replay. I watched the final in Edinburgh.

The future is nuclear, oil is shit, & guess who has 3/4 of the worlds uranium deposits. So enjoy it while you can arabs, coz it ain’t gooner last 😆

And you are right, the long term future of The Arsenal is what matters. The future of football will be a Euro League type thing, & when the time comes to picking the 20 teams to play in it, there will be The Arsenal with its sensational revenue earning state of the art stadium, & with plenty of money in the kitty. The Arsenal will be in that comp, because of the work being done during the Wenger era. Sure I’m as pissed off about the state of things now, probably not as afffected as you all over there coz those other fans are constantly in your face, as are the media, but, The Arsenal will have the last laugh, coz they will be one of the 1st picked for the new future League.

I cannot see how Man City are not a threat to Arsenal or any other premier league team for that matter. They have got the players and their only weakness could be that they do not have a manager who have won a title before as manager. Lets see when the season starts – its going to be interesting.

    thats a top post…

theres alot of well balanced post about but i prefer the rants if im honest and that seemed like a rant…passionate to the point and i cant agree more…

it wouldnt be the same in any sport if we started having unlevel playing fields….

its like watching a boxing match and one bloke has gloves and the other has a cricket bat…but you hope the dude with the gloves beats the living shit out of the guy with the bat….

you want the cheaters to fall on their asses…always…

im happy with the way we are and im proud of the level playing field we keep…

if we were to spent 250 million and won the lot i wouldnt be proud…it would mean more to win it doing it the way we are…the point of the game is taken away…the sport is no longer a sport…its like being a bully…

i know i was on about spending money on the last post..but i didnt mean to go out and spend 100mil that we dont have…

i just want a new midfielder that will complement cesc and for less than 10mil i think we could get him…and i wont believe it if someone told me we dont have 10mil

if we have the money for hangelaand and chamkakak then great but lets stop wasting time and just get them…

i hate citeh and i hate chelsea and i hope barca stuff madrid in la liga too…

    Morning Roadsters

Tip top ave – the annoying thing with Arsenal is that none of us really know who much money we have, all we are able to do is calculate how much we gain from selling and then think ‘why don’t we spend that money’ – I know I think along those lines.. But the club leaks conflicting stories about finances, they always have done..

Because of that, all we see is us to be is, sell sell sell, and then go on a bargin hunt every now and again for a player..

But I don’t want to be like Citeh, Chelsea, Manure, Madrid etc etc – because one day they could all do a ‘Leeds’ and they will break all our hearts.

Looking back when we won our titles under AW, it was before all the takeovers – we are not a club in financial crisis unlike the others, and one day, we must and will reign again, and hopefully without a Russian at the helm…

Interesting one worth a read 😛

These are cycles – we had Chelsea, now we have Citeh. In Europe, we have Madrid, in cycles.

Chelsea has backed off the spending. Roman is hurting.

I feel very sorry for Pellegrini, though. He is under too much pressure.

I would have liked to see him succeed Wenger, whenever Arsene gets kicked upstairs.

  6. PDT says:

I don’t think we would have bid that much for Subotic.

  7. JonJon says:

i dont think weve bid for him at all…

    Morning Wes

The reality is that Man City are a threat, it’s just that we are not ready to admit it yet.

  9. rico says:

Where do they get all these rumours from 😉

Good to see you PDT and wes

  10. Big Raddy says:

Of course City are a threat.

But think on this – they absolutely thrashed us away last season, how much worse could it get?

They will take points off our Top 4 rivals as well.

As long as we cure our current addiction of making the “easy” games difficult (Stoke/Hull/Fulham/Sunderland/WHU etc), we will be fine. Champions? Maybe not, but our problems CAN be sorted. Had those games resulted in the 3 points we assumed they would, we COULD have been contenders !

And being a cup half full chap, I believe we will have a decent season. My prediction is for a poor start to the campaign and then a long run of unbeaten games. 10 points by the end of Sept, and then we will steadily rise up the table.

  11. rico says:

    Morning Raddy

  12. Big Raddy says:

    Morning Rico.

I used to be a big fan of City ,they were always my second team. Bell, Summerbee, Lee, Corrigan etc.

I went up to see them a few times – crap pitch, horrible town, and we rarely got a result up there. Great kit in those days as well.

There seems little difference between what is happening at MC and say THFC, Newcastle, AV, or L’pool. And let us not forget that MU have 3 players that cost £30+m. It is a money game. That AW and the Board choose not to compete is both admirable and foolhardy (IMO)

  13. rico says:

I remember you saying that before Raddy, when Sven started out as manager there, I thought they were going on to good times..

The one man who needs to watch his back (imo) is Mark Hughes and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him out by Christmas – he has a lot of ‘big’ players to try and keep happy, and of course, I hope he fails 😉

  14. London says:

    Morning Roadsters

A very good, thought provoking post Ave, I am going to answer it honestly, which will be from a different angle to your own, it is not meant to be argumentative, it is just the way I see things and I am sure you wouldn’t want me to agree with you for the sake of it; although you might joke that it would make a pleasant change once in a while 😉

If I have understood your post correctly you don’t like City because of their new found wealth, you used to have a soft spot for them when they were broke but now they can compete you want to see them crash and burn. You miss the days of your youth when football business seemed to be conducted on a more level playing field and fear that the financial imbalance that City bring could ultimately lead to empty stadiums.

I bet if I looked hard enough I could find a City fan who wrote exactly the same thing about Arsenal in the 1930’s when we had the biggest Sugar Daddy of the day; a man who went about spending more money on players than anyone else; which, as I am sure you know, led to winning the league three times on the trot.

Many supporters still view us as the big financial bullies, look at Fulham, I feel certain that they are unhappy about the financial pressures we can impose on one of their players in an attempt to lure him away, where is the equality there? There is none; we are the ones with the cricket bat and they are the ones with the boxing gloves and how many Arsenal fans have we heard say we shouldn’t buy Hangeland because that is not fair to Fulham.

It is worth remembering where and how City got this new found spending power. The club was for sale and was bought by a Middle Eastern business man whose interests are not solely in oil, are we to limit how much someone is worth? The idea is ridiculous. If this middle eastern business man’s equally wealthy best friend went and bought Newcastle I would say good luck because that is how football evens it self out now.

I think the image of City fans driving their light blue Ferraris around Manchester showing off to the red half of town is hilarious; because, what has happened is a bit of that equality that you pine for Ave has returned.

United have been buying the league for years, why weren’t people crying foul when they were spending 30 million on players? The only thing that most Arsenal supporters cry is why can’t we spend some of our money? Why do we always have to look for bargains? I accept the financial system that Arsenal works within but if Kroenke wanted to spend 250 million on players and we won the league I would have no problem with it at all.

  15. Big Raddy says:

I don’t Rico. (hope he fails). My hope is that MU find they cannot replace Ron/Tev and fall away. I would also like to see AV and Everton become more competetive.

Sure I love to see AFC in the CL, but I also am bored with the Top 4. I want more competition, not a guarantee that we will get a CL place – more a possibility.

I realise I am in a minority, and I don’t want the club to go backwards, but the trend across the whole of Europe of having a League that can only be won by the G14(+) is killing football as a spectator sport. You only have to look at the attendances (apart from UK/Germany)

  16. avenell says:

    Morning Roadsters..

London, I feel that football clubs should generate there own finance not get it from outside sources as it will ruin football.
The pressure we put on Fulham has come from money that has come from within our fanbase and the quality of football that Wenger has produced to keep us in the Champions league..

Although I know about our success in the 1930’s, I know little about our finances and if it came from an outside source.

Raddy.. In case you never read it the other day welcome back mate..

Wes, Hi thanks for blogging and reading Avenell Road..

  17. London says:

It’s good to have you back BR, I can finally take this jealous image out of my head of you wandering around the beautiful Italian country side.

  18. PDT says:

    Hi Rico!

BigRad, you are a glutton for punishment!

  19. London says:

    Morning Ave

Why should we have an advantage over Fulham just because we have a bigger stadium? We are trying to make the rules to suit ourselves.

  20. PDT says:

The whole rishes thing is cyclical. Sometimes we have it, most times others have it.

You can’t compete on money alone. Hughes isn’t going to be able to transform himself, hence Man City will not change mch either.

Pellegrini can do an excellent job if given time, but with the stars and egos at his command, I doubt if he will last through the winter.

  21. PDT says:

  22. PDT says:

I keep getting a messsage saying I am posting too soon….!!

  23. PDT says:

Avenell, does that mean that we shouldn’t have taken a loan to build the stadium? In a sense, the bank was our sugar daddy….

  24. PDT says:

Sorry, looks like I am monopolizing the conversation….

  25. rico says:

Raddy, I bet you are not in a minority when it comes to hoping Manure fade away – for me though it has to be The Dippers, my hate for them runs very deep, so lets hope its the both of them 😉

  26. London says:

    Monopolise away PDT

You have some very interesting thoughts

I was trying to think of something more to say to Ave but you have just delivered the coup de grace.

  27. avenell says:

    Hi, PDT..

Only if we don’t have to pay the bank back like Chelsea or Man city ..

London .. the bigger stadium thing is wrong if Fulham had a 60,000 seater stadium they wouldn’t fill it.

  28. rico says:

    Morning ave

Off for a while, catch you later when Hangeland is a Gooner 😉

  29. avenell says:

    Hi rico.. bye Rico..

  30. rico says:

Nothing you said ave, just there is a birthday in the house and i must be good 😉 😉

  31. avenell says:

Okay.. have a good day Rico.. 🙂

  32. Big Raddy says:

Italy was f-fabulous as always London.

Banks/Arabs/Russians/Americans – what’s the difference. True, we self finance, but what is so great about that? The traditional Good Old Arsenal no longer exists – we have a French manager, a team of foreign mercenaries, a Board that can get rid of Nina and replace her with foreigners.

It seems to me that we are in an uneasy transition period, a new Arsenal will arise – financially healthy and streamlined. More akin to Ajax and Bayern.

  33. Big Raddy says:

…… but will the fans wait without silverware? It is no good being a model club without a huge and expanding fanbase.

For the first time in many years, there were no fake AFC shirts in the Italian markets – they don’t sell anymore. This is a problem that needs addressing NOW. There is a reason why the top clubs go to Asia for friendlies, and our marketing dept need to clue in fast.

  34. JonJon says:

i like the concept of self sustaining but it is a concept that was forced on us by wenger and the baord because of the current situation…

before the move to the emirates we were told we were moving to help us compete with the other big clubs…

now we are here and we are being told we need to save money…

    basically its aload of spin..

as i said i like the concept of self finance better than a sugar daddy…

but all this talk of we shouldnt spend more than we earn is over exaggerated sometimes because we already have…..

we have spunked just as much money as what chelsea and citeh and manure have…money that wasnt ours…money that belongs to someone else….only it want on team…it was on bricks and motor..including a proprty venture which we are told is ringfenced just so we dont kick off abot money not going into the team

so why is it ok for us to spend half a million quid that isnt ours on banging a few buildings together but it isnt ok to spend 10million on a player that will improve the team….?????

we are a football club after all not an estate agents…

and whats this talk of building a new sports centre??

how much is that gonna cost us….???

no wonder we arent buying anyone….

ade and kolo have been exchanged for a set of windows and a few door frames

  35. Big Raddy says:

    LOL JJ

    All you say is true.

Plus we are desperate for a Big Name signing and have been so since TH left. It isn’t about halting the progress of the kids, in fact it is the opposite. What does JW think when he walks into the Ist team dressing room? F me, I am sitting next to Alex Song ? Not quite the same as when Clichy went and sat next to TH14, is it?

  36. avenell says:

    Morning jonjon..

But we have spent £28 million pounds on players, We haven’t spent £500 million pounds which isn’t ours on a new stadium.. we have spent £200 million which is ours and borrowed the other £300 million that has to be paid back to the banks, which was lent to us because we have a solvent buisness..

No we are not property developers but why should other companies make the money out of Highbury Square when we can have those profits ourselves?

We have to build this sports centre because I imagine it is part of the deal with Islington town council where they allow us to build a new stadium and we put something back into the community.

  37. PDT says:

Big Rad, I’d call Arsh a big name signing..

  38. Big Raddy says:

That he is PDT. But his name is never on the shirts abroad – Fab is the face of AFC, and he is hardly a media star.

    Chavs – Fat Lamps/Drogba
    MU – Rooney/Berbs(?) (was Ronnie 🙂 )
    L’pool – Torres/Gerrard
    Citeh – Robinho

  39. avenell says:

I would say a lot of that is down to media coverage.. The fact that we don’t pay £25 million pounds plus for a player to them means he is not world class..

We are always put down by the media..

  40. PDT says:

Give it a year, Big Rad….the Arsh will shine!

  41. gnarleygeorge9 says:

BR is back I see. Howdy

I just checked out some of those new kits. What is going on with that horrid manure Home & Away. & Evertons. Gotta say I like man city’s though. & I don’t like collars on The Arsenal’s, I prefer the type on Charlie & Raddys avatar 🙂

  42. Big Raddy says:

Hi GG. Absolutely gutted by the humiliation in the last Test. I was all ready to give it large, and then we self-destructed. Fools

Ave. That is my point – media coverage. A player like TH carries the media with him. I know it is mad, but I would take Becks for a season. I am sure he would prefer it at THOF than in Milan (as if!), and he is used to being Theo’s understudy !

  43. bops says:

    Wow.. That was deep.. 🙂

  44. avenell says:

Raddy… if we win something this year that should be the answer to most of our problems..

How are you feeling about our chances? I am pretty positive..

  45. avenell says:

Hi Bops.. sorry you was in moderation..

  46. London says:

    Hi Bops

What are your thoughts on Ave’s headline post?

  47. London says:

When you are good, you are great Jonjon, LMAO

“ade and kolo have been exchanged for a set of windows and a few door frames”

  48. avenell says:

I’m a bit gutted we paid £6 million for him now..

Former Aston Villa, Celtic and Bayern Munich star Alan Macinally has labeled Manchester City’s purchase of Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor as his ‘bonkers buy’ of the transfer window. Following in the footsteps of former Everton striker Tony Cottee, the player-turned-pundit told Sky Sports that the Togo international was certainly not worth the huge sum paid out by Mark Hughes.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Macinally stressed:

“I wouldn’t have given you £2 million for Adebayor, yet they spent £25 million.

“I would say Leroy Lita to Middlesbrough but that’s not in The Premier League! Let’s just say Emmanuel Adebayor to Man City because he’ll throw his toys out the pram.”

  49. chaf says:

JJ – those windows we got for Toure, were they double glazed?

    Evening….

  52. London says:

I was trying to watch the Scottish implosion but the standard of football was so bad I couldn’t stand it anymore. I noticed an interesting piece of Keystone Cop defending from Hangeland in the first half but now that the Scots are down to 10 men there is nothing for him to do and therefore no longer any point in me watching it.

  53. London says:

    Nice one Chaf

Good to see you on form. I can’t think of a follow on but I suspect in a pub with Bob P and a few others we could make that one run, in between fits of laughter, for about an hour.

  54. JonJon says:

    evening all..

ave…yes i exaggerated the finances with the amount borrowed but the principles the same…

weve been banging horns over this for the past two days and in all honesty i really dont know why we are having this debate because weve spoken about this so many times before and i agree with all the sentiments you make….

the stadium, the highbury land, the sugar daddy, the keeping the level playing field, practically everything…

ive said when we signed TV that i would be unhappy if he was our only signing before the start of the season….and this looks like the situation we are facing..so im unhappy…

becuase after last season we obviously needed a new CM more than anything….something again we both agreed on…

and im not saying lets go out and spend 100mil on a new cm….but the thing that gets my goat is our transfer policy…

wenger admitted he needed to strengthen in certain areas….hes been quoted as saying he would like maybe 2 players and he has all of the 40mil if he wants it…

so why when he has all that money at his disposal is he haggling over a few quid and waiting until the last minute….lets use the hangelaand situation for example just for the sake of debate…wenger likes him…he would probably come and he would definately be an improvement on the current defenders we already have…wengers probably said i value him no more than 10mil….hodgsons come back with 15….wenger says no, 10…so hodgson, with a little player and agent power might say ok i’ll meet you half way..12.5mil….wenger still says 10…. why??? why are we stalling over the sake of 2.5mil when he has the money just to pay the full 15mil in the first place??? its money hes created himself with player sales so its not like hes borrowing from anyone or spending what we dont have…he’d still be working within his means…

it doenst make sense…not when wengers prepared to pay 12mil for theo and 5 mil for ramsey without batting an eyelid….these are players that wont be ready for 5 years..in walcotts case it could be another 5…and youve said yourself your unsure about ramsey(which i agree with)

surely paying 17mil for two kids who have hardly 10 first team games between them is overpaying….so why when it comes to the real thing do we take our time and mess about over the sake of a couple of million on a player who would be ready now and have at least 5 good years left in him…???

    thats what pisses me off….

  55. JonJon says:

  60. raif says:

ill believe the Hangeland roumors when i see him holding our shirt

  61. JonJon says:

    london…

that would make sense…senderos leaves for everton but only after weve played them…then we replace him with the norweigan…hes already played in europe so ican see his price not being as high…but why would hodgson do that knowing he could be expecting a bid…unless he thought it would put arsene off????

    what german bloke raif???

  63. JonJon says:

i still think that the defence is not a priorty area… TV and hangelaand would make sence with kolo and senderos leaving and gallas and silvestre contracts up next year and will be excellent additions…but the midfield really worries me…especially with nasri and rosicky out…

i had a knee jerk reaction after rosicky was injured but we have jacky and barazite so im not that worried over our attacking options…

but we are relying heavily on denilson or diaby will do a flamini in the centre and i dont think either of them have it in them…

  64. raif says:

he plays for Dortmund his name is Neven Subotic and his 6ft 4

i heard his the best CB in the Bundesliga

  65. JonJon says:

    wow london

looks like gazidis has being putting alot of overtime in behind the scenes into creating a better atmosphere in the stadium….

  66. JonJon says:

hes only 20 though isnt he raif….???

i dunno if hes what we need when wenger was pinpointing experience as one of our problem areas..

  67. JonJon says:

well..i take that back….i say im not worried about our wide attacking options but it depends if wenger gives jack a chance or he sticks with eboue or diaby…

  68. raif says:

Jonj.. check him out on this video..

his a giant tho we could use his hight

  69. JonJon says:

it doesnt show him defending though raif…just heading a few goals…

i want to know what hes like in our own box..

  70. raif says:

lol i know i know.. i just wanted to show you his hight.. he will look like a tower block next to our players hahaha

  71. JonJon says:

haha…yeah raif we could put AK on rosickys shoulders (if his legs can take it) and they still wouldnt be as tall…

  72. London says:

    hahahahahahaha

yeah ave johnson was garbage…17mil now that is overpaying… 😉

come to think of it most of the team was… thank god none of our players played for england… it would tarnish their reps….come to think of it again maybe england need some of our lads now… 😉

are we cool ave or do we need to step outside… 😆

london he wasnt anything special…i think the sub was an agreement with wenger cos he didnt seem injured…

  82. London says:

You guys are so hard on RVP when it comes to his free kicks, who is better? RVP you should be like?

  83. London says:

    Jonjon

I reckon our team on Saturday could look like Rasputin’s nightmare, I’m not quite sure what to say? It is going to include Denilson, Song, Diaby and Eboue.

  84. avenell says:

How many free kicks has RvP scored in the last 2 years again?..
Considering he takes anything within range..

Nah step outside Jonjon.. There’s a lovely moon out there..

  85. London says:

    Ave

I probably asked for that, but who would you prefer to take them?

  86. JonJon says:

london but i cant remember the last time he scored from one…and hes supposed to be the clubs no.1

every other teams no.1 freekick specialist scores at least 4-5 goals per season from them…

i dont think robins hit one in 3 years…lol

his deadball crosses are spectacular and unstoppable but his shots from dead balls are crap…

i domt know who should take them..nobody else has ever been given a chance.. 😉

ave..at least take me out for dinner and buy me flowers first 😉

  87. avenell says:

Arshavin, Nasri, of Fabregas even.. just break it up a bit.. not just the same old RvP just over the bar..

RvP must of had one free kick a game, That must be 60 free kicks no goals.. surely we can give someone else a go..

  88. JonJon says:

    london..

rasps nightmare is also my nightmare…that same midfield was poor last season….

that midfield makes me feel queezy…

we’ll see how we do but i reckon everton manure and mancity will be too strong for them…

  89. London says:

    fair enough

I will be off and let you two have some privacy. Night, night.

  90. avenell says:

    Cheers London..

  91. JonJon says:

i was really looking forward to a mifield of nasri, cesc, another, rosicky

but we havent signed anyone and nasri and rosick are out…

so we are left with eboue/theo cesc song/denilson/ramsey AA/diaby….mmmmmm plenty of options but as we saw last year crap options..

    personally…id go with jack,cesc, song,AA

screw the rest…we stand more of a chance especially without eboue and diaby..

  92. JonJon says:

    night london…

so what you reckon ave…you reckon wengers gonna go with what hes got???

save the cash and see where we are by xmas and then decide if we need to spend…

i think thats looking the likely option..

  93. Rasputin says:

Did I hear my name mentioned? 😉

  94. avenell says:

We are signing Hangeland by saturday jonjon.. so no ..

As I have said before if a player we are after comes into Arsene’s valuation we will buy..

    Evening Raspno

  95. JonJon says:

    evening rasp….

    ears burning.. 😉

  96. Rasputin says:

I dunno about the eve of destruction, but before a ball has been kicked in anger in the prem … our injury list stands at

    Rosicky
    Nasri
    Djourou
    Fabianski
    Walcott (minor)

A certain person who could not possibly say ITYS … stated ” with the squad weaker than last season, we will need to be lucky with injuries to have a chance of winning anything”

The ray of hope is …..

    “Breaking News….hangeland in by Saturday!

Just been reported on talksport by the reporter of the Norway v Scotland game, that in the morning norwegian papers, it will be splashed all across the back pages…….

He reportedly will sign by Saturday for the Gunners……..

    …where’s that bloody straw gone?

  97. Rasputin says:

    Evening JonJon,

The fat lady’s looking across to the conductor who is tapping his baton on the music stand as the orchestra prepare to strike the first note……..

  98. peachesgooner says:

….a member of the audience has been taken ill so there will be a slight delay in the proceedings…..

Evening chaps – hows the mood in the camp 🙂

  99. peachesgooner says:

Hangelaand in by Saturday – a small smile might spread across my face 😉

  100. Rasputin says:

    Hi peaches,

We’re happy as Larry – pass the strychnine …….

  101. JonJon says:

hangelaands good news…it will mean senderos is leaving…

our rays of hope are AK cesc and dudu..as well as jack..

if those 4 play all the games and they turn it on we should be ok until nasri and rosick get back…

  102. peachesgooner says:

I’ve just had the evening from hell – driving the singing ones possessions to bloody Bow – got lost on the way there and more lost on the way home……. 😦 if no-one is going to talk to me I’m gonna sulk in a big way …… 😦 😦 😦

  103. peachesgooner says:

Thankyou JonJon – my ray of hope ….. we have so many options for a fabulous mid-field that I’m going to cheer myself up with the thought of huummmmmm
    AK Cesc Song Theo????

  104. peachesgooner says:

See you’ve all buggered off cos theres a grumpy woman in the house…… 😉

I’m gonna be chilled soon – I’m having a glass of wine 🙂

  105. JonJon says:

if wenger picks the right players peaches we shouldnt have too much of a problem…even with the injuries we have..

its having eboue and diaby in the midfield that worries me the most…and wengers more likey to play them now more than ever..not to mention playing nikki on the wing….

  106. peachesgooner says:

I saw the Statman today – my son was having an interview at the Emirates and I was waiting in reception. Hes not very big – Denilson that is….. 🙂

  107. peachesgooner says:

JonJon – did I read someone say that Diaby could be the beast we’re looking for in mid-field, it wasn’t on here I don’t think actually but sometimes I wonder how much football some bloggers actually watch.

Diaby has been abyssmal for the last 2 seasons – its more scary having his name on the team-sheet that Eboue IMO – no actually they are both as bad as each other in different ways

  108. Rasputin says:

    JonJon,

Do you think AW has had some kind of ‘conversion’ and will not carry on picking the same sort of teams as he did last season?

  109. peachesgooner says:

…..I just noticed you mentioned Nikki on the wing – madness complete madness…..

see the wine has kicked in too many actually’s in that last comment … 🙂

  110. peachesgooner says:

    rasp – 🙂 do you?

  111. JonJon says:

i know hes one of the pygmy members of the squad..bless him..

  112. peachesgooner says:

Do we think this Hangelaand story is real?

  113. Rasputin says:

    No 😦

He’ll be overprotective of LJ, he’ll play Denilson and Song, and possibly Diaby Too. He’ll start with RVP and Nik instead of putting Dudu up front….

  114. peachesgooner says:

My son on the other hand is a beast of a 19 year old – 6′ 2″ and stacked – only problem is hes not very good at football 😦

  115. JonJon says:

    rasp…

    thats what scares me… 😦

  116. peachesgooner says:

    rasp

thats what scares me too… 😦

  117. peachesgooner says:

I’m sure he’ll use LJ and Dudu as impact subs though on the stroke of 18 minutes to go – I don’t think its fair for LJ to have to come on and change a game though I’m sure thats what shattered his confidence last season.

  118. JonJon says:

    peaches…if senderos leaves then possibly…

  119. peachesgooner says:

Oh but JJ I love Senderos …… he could be so good, I’ve watched him really carefully…… do you think the two are connected?

  120. Rasputin says:

Senderos didn’t want to com back to us … I think he’d rather play in Italy or Spain, but no-one from there has come in from him. He’s only had interest from the prem as far as I know, and he doesn’t seem to fancy that.

  121. JonJon says:

i think jack should be ahead of theo and eboue in the pecking order…thats how good he is…he plays wengerball perfectly….he understands cesc and AA and he links up play, takes men out of the game, has a final ball and is dangerous in front of goal…

theo and eboue offer nothing in comparison…yes jack will get targetted and fouled alot..but hes a dribbler and dribblers always end up getting fouled…

he should play…i dont remember everton having a problem playing rooney even manure didnt have a problem playing rooney…

barca didnt have a problem playing messi…

jack needs to play because if i was as good as jack and i had to sit on the bench every week and watch eboue play in my position instead id probably slit my wrists…

  122. peachesgooner says:

JJ – I couldn’t agree more, hes such a talent – even this time last year a lot of bloggers wanted him to play more – remember how good it was that he had a first team squad no?

  123. JonJon says:

unless senderos has learned to keep concentration hes no good to us…

hes good in the air but those concentration lapses are costly and he doesnt organise too well…

dont forget this is a guy who broke down after a couple of costly mistakes in an important game….hes not good enough mentally or physically…

hangelaands a much better defender..fulham conceeded less goals than us last season and hangelaand was their orgniser….that tells me everything i need to know about him…

  124. peachesgooner says:

While I was waiting at the Ems I wondered if The Hangman would arrive…….

  125. Rasputin says:

Good news … Dudu scored for Croatia tonight … RVP didn’t = conclusion…. Dudu is our best No.9

  126. Rasputin says:

The spuds are cockahoop about their strikeforce … all 4 seem to be on form and with Defoe getting both of England’s goals, they’ll be bleating on about finishing above us in the prem again no doubt. I’m glad they’ve got pool first game of the season.

  127. peachesgooner says:

RVP only played half a game – how about Dudu?

  128. Rasputin says:

It was a typical RVP performance… a couple of moments when you went “oooh that was classy”, but no goals 😦

  129. Rasputin says:

    MAYDAY MAYDAY … ATTENTION …RED ALERT …!!!!

It’s about time we started taking these ‘Cesc to Barca’ rumours more seriously. He hasn’t come out and made his customary denial, and the reports are not being refuted. If he goes for £40m, we will not spend the money on players anywhere near his quality this late in the transfer window. His money will be added to that of Ade and Kolo and go towards debt/developments …. now that really is something to be depressed about…..

  130. Rasputin says:

I was listening to the pundits discussing who would win the prem after the England game, and we weren’t even mentioned 😦

  131. raif says:

    Rasputin

dont be suprised mate.. we never get a mention and if we do its how were going to crash and burn

  132. gnarleygeorge9 says:

Sorry Irish about the result, but when Timmy Cahill is in the mood 😉

  133. rico says:

    Morning Roadsters…

Rasp, don’t be worried, it’s coming from Barca rather than mis quotes from Cesc, I don’t think he has anything to deny this time…

  134. gnarleygeorge9 says:

    BR

Re Cricket. Its still up for grabs now. But I spose we have an away goal sort of thing if The Oval is a draw.

  135. gnarleygeorge9 says:

    Evening rico

  136. rico says:

    Morning george 😉

It will be a strange old test, your boys hit such heights last match and gave us a lesson, seems the ECB are now going to panic and there is talks of Ramps the gooner, Tres or even Key being bought in for the match. We should be going all out for the win, so should be a good game, or another battering for England 😉

  137. gnarleygeorge9 says:

The word from here is that Ricky is desperate to rewrite the wrongs of 2005. Anyway, I hope its a flat track, a draw will do me 😆

  138. rico says:

Just listening to Sky Sports News, the chap who reports for them on the transfer gossip has made few comments about Arsenal and Arsene..

He says that the talk on Hangeland has gone quiet, he says that Arsenal are the worst club to try and get any information from, and we are the journalists worst nightmare.

However he does say that the club have confirmed that some talks and negotiations are going on with transfer targets, but they wont reveal who with.

The reporter says that Arsene is happy with his squad, yet he expects additions. Also the suggestion is that AW is waiting to see if we get past Celtic, however as the second tie is the 26th, he worries over the little time left to complete transfers..

  139. rico says:

Sadly george, I think it will be a draw, the weather will see to that 😦

  140. gnarleygeorge9 says:

    rico

    😎

  141. gnarleygeorge9 says:

Tx gossip re The Arsenal is obviously just made up then if the media say stuff like that about getting info from The Club.

  142. rico says:

Exactly george, it’s all b******t that is written about us, confirmed by the paps, they obviously hate us for not giving them any info and either make up stupid stuff or drag up old news – just like the Barca stuff with Cesc..

PHW supposedly talks with The Daily Star, so I tend to take to take reports in there a little more seriously, but not too seriously 😉

  143. rico says:

Take the Chamakh news in the Sun this morning. They say we are no longer looking at him etc etc – what they mean is AW won’t tell us what he is thinking, mme, lets make it up and see if we can get a response that will give us a headline… Huh, they get diddly squit 😉

  144. gnarleygeorge9 says:

Well its taken me 2 off seasons of blogging to have this confirmed. Now I know to take 95% of Arsenal transfer gossip as made up.

  145. rico says:

george, I used to read all the paps and would get my hopes up, only to have them shattered, I remember all the hype about Baptista before he signed for Madrid, ITV announced we had signed him on their teletex channel – he was such a massive player then and I was elated, I learned a lot from that 😦 Remember last season too, when Woodgate was off to Spurs, Sky reported that we had come in with a better offer at the 11th hour – anyway, its good to hear the club have confirmed that things are happening, just guess we will have to wait and see who the player(s) are..

  146. chaf says:

Morning all – don’t believe the hype. Everybody has to make a living, papers to sell, TV ratings. Even the presenters on Talksport try to be controversial so you ring them. Theres only 90 minutes a week that really counts..

  147. London says:

    Morning Chaf

Never a truer word, there is only the 90 minutes that counts; the rest is hot air.

  148. rico says:

Morning chaf, I don’t believe anything anymore until its announced on AFC.Com 😉

  149. chaf says:

    Good morning London

Must say though, I like hot air, it usually comes with sunshine.

  150. chaf says:

    Morning Rico!

  151. rico says:

The below is from jeorge birds youth site

Arsenal have submitted their squad list for the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League campaign, naming 48 players, including all but one of the young professionals outside the first-team squad.

Newly-signed professionals Luke Ayling, Craig Eastmond, Cedric Evina and James Shea have all been included in the squad for the first time, whilst returning loanees Kerrea Gilbert and Gavin Hoyte have also been named.

The players have been allocated squad numbers in order of their surnames- hence Ayling takes no.32 all the way down to no.54, Sanchez Watt. This is with the exception of no.52, which is Nicklas Bendtner’s new number.

The club’s only major summer signing to date, Thomas Vermaelen, will wear no.5, with Kieran Gibbs sporting no.28. Luke Freeman, despite signing professional terms last season, has not been included in the squad. Philippe Senderos has also been included, despite Everton making an offer for the Swiss centre-back.

In order to qualify for the Champions League group stages, the Gunners must first negotiate a tricky two-legged tie with SPL runners-up Celtic.

Despite their high squad numbers, Fran Merida and Wojciech Szczesny are both part of the first-team squad having attended the photocall at Emirates Stadium last Tuesday.

  153. rico says:

Oh well, no-one wants to talk to me so I am off…

  154. PDT says:

Good morning, good roadsters, and good morning Rico!

So much for Mark Hughes! Adebayor is off injured on international duty!

  155. PDT says:

I read the story about Fran, but there has been no news about it after that one day. Do you know which day the first team photograph was taken? Was it after the 9th or before?

  156. PDT says:

Rico, if you read this, you have company. No one wants to talk to me either.

  157. PDT says:

The good news is that I don’t get called names here, like I do on some of the other blogs.

“PDT, did you or did you besmirch the name of the holy Arsene on so and so date at such and such time? You are unwelcome, so @*%$#@%$# &^$$#* and be off whence you came!”

  158. PDT says:

So I’ll be back…till then, au revoir!

  159. avenell says:

    Hi Roadsters..

Sorry I just missed you PDT. I was out..

Are we getting Hangeland before Saturday still?

  160. rico says:

    Afternoon Guys

PDT – Sorry I missed you, I know how it feels to have no-one speaking to you 😉 Come back 😛

    How you doing ave ?

  161. rico says:

The paps in Norway suggest we are, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the defender we get is someone totally different ave

  162. rico says:

This is a strange one if it holds any kind of truth….

    http://www.newsnow.co.uk/A/363835714?-19387

  163. raif says:

eboue to barca. that would be the day. same goes for ac milan.

  164. rico says:

Hi raif, it can’t have any truth in in, surely – can it ? 😉

  165. raif says:

hey rico.. i dont think so to be honest,, they would rather get a decent spanish bloke then a substandard eboue.

  166. rico says:

Its a quiet old afternoon, no news other than Citeh are still trying to get Lescott, lets hope he loses focus at the weekend and has a dire game against us 😉

  167. rico says:

David Bentley has been charged with Drink Driving….

    Oh Dear Oh Dear 😛

  168. raif says:

he hit a lamp post haha..

harry must have told him his days are numberd

  169. rico says:

What a twit he is, he was on his way before this, now he is definately on the look out for a new club – Brucie likes drink drivers, maybe he would like him… He looked after jailbird Pennant 😉

  170. raif says:

hahahaha thats true.. if they sell him does that mean we get some cash aswell 😀

  171. rico says:

I don’t think so raif, we had that when he went to the spuds – but lets hope I am wrong 😉

  172. rico says:

Bentley could very well get a prison sentence 🙂

After all, our Big Tony did…

  173. raif says:

now that would be great to see.

spurs would have a player they couldnt shift on or play haha..

  174. rico says:

    Wouldn’t it just raif 😛

  175. London says:

    Afternoon all

Why won’t Hangeland sign before Saturday? Becasue if we lose there will be a tidal way of people shouting at Wenger saying why didn’t you play Hangeland, where as if he signs on Saturday there is no chance of this happening……I don’t know, of course, just a guess.

  176. rico says:

Hi London – I haven’t a clue, it was the papers in Norway that have started this latest rumour, personally I think its rubbish – I don’t think even if he signed today he would walk into the side for Saturday unless TV is injured – I am not even sure if there is any substance in AW being after him anymore..

  177. rico says:

I still worry about where our goals are going to come from… 😦

  178. London says:

It’s difficult to know Rico what’s going on with Hangeland.

I have great faith that Eduardo is going to come up with the goods this season; although, I don’t expect him to start on Saturday neither do I think he should, better to wait until the play is compressed in their half and then bring him on, that way he will still be fresh for Celtic.

  179. rico says:

Did you see my comment first thing London from one of the journalists who reports for SSN’s?

I think Eduardo got injured last night – but I agree if he stays fit, and in a 4-4-2 format he is one who could score many goals, but I think his first full season back will be a tough one for him. I would love to see him and Arshavin up front together. Play the short sharp pacey passing with two deadly strikers at the end of each attack….

  180. Rasputin says:

    Afternoon Roadsters,

I think we should start all prem games with our strongest possible side (unless we are 10 points clear with 3 games left!)

Every prem game is of equal importance. We’ve shown that we can lose to the best teams and to the worst teams. If we are cruising by 3 nil at half time, we can rest players for up and coming games.

If AW has said that its not the end of the world if we don’t get into the CL, is he covering himself in case that happens? or is he placing greater emphasis on winning the prem?

  181. rico says:

Hi Rasp – Eduardo would start every game for me 😉

  182. rico says:

have to pop out for a hour, back shortly

  183. Rasputin says:

Hi rico, of all the strikers, Eduardo would be my first choice when fit. I’m not sure what the best combination is. I feel he plays better with Nik, do maybe RVP could play in midfield (wide?). This would be possible if we had the strong midfielder we’ve all been hoping for….

  184. PDT says:

Top scorers for Arsenal this season (all competitions) :

    Arshavin – 25
    Eduardo – 20
    RvP – 20
    NikB – 10
    Vela – 8
    Rosicky – 5
    Nasri – 5
    Cesc – 8
    Theo/Wilshere – 8
    Gallas/rest of defence – 5
    Gallas – 5

  185. PDT says:

Plug in Diaby/Denilson/Song etc. for another 5.

  186. Rasputin says:

All out of the Everton game so far ….

    WALCOTT – back injury.
NASRI – may be available in October
    DIABY – groin injury
ROSICKY – hamstring, possibly back in 2 weeks……
DJOUROU – knee injury, out until September
    FABIANSKI – he’s had knee surgery,out for 2 months.

TV – may play but has a niggling injury

We have more injuries now and a smaller squad than we did at the end of last season……..

If we are pissing around with the Hangeland deal for peurile PR reasons, we should be ashamed…

  187. London says:

The not getting into the CL comment is designed to cover himself and the club. The reality would be, as everyone knows, an absolute unmitigated disaster.

  188. London says:

    Hey Rasp

Ave has offered me the opportunity to write the post Everton report but as I have done the last two match reports I thought it only right that I should offer it to you and Peaches, would you like to write the report?

  189. rico says:

Rasp, thats a lot of injuries, have the club confirmed those? We are doo doo already and the season hasn’t even started 😦

  190. Rasputin says:

    Hi London, rico,

London… to be honest, I am not in the mood to write anything at the moment. I’m sure you’d make a much better job of it so please feel free……

rico … those are just bits I’ve picked up. Theo may be available. We can’t rely on the Arsenal web site for any up to date news…. We are in doo doo, and if we beat Everton 4 nil, we will still be in doo doo…. Soeone on here forecast that we will have 7 points at the end of September … I’d see that as our poorest ever start to a prem season.

  191. London says:

    PDT

I have been studying your expected goal tally, it makes a great deal of sense. The only alteration I would make is to lower Arshavin to 20 and increase Bendtner to 15 but I realise that I am probably splitting hairs.

  192. London says:

Wenger has just given an interview explaining who is and who isn’t injured, Djourou out for a month was a bit of a surprise, Diaby, groin but could possibly play Saturday, Walcott out, but only days away, so he will play at Celtic. Vermaelen back and no mention of a problem with Bendtner and Eduardo. So Wenger’s team for Saturday will be:

    ———Almunia
    Sagna,Gallas,Vermaelen,Clichy
    —Denilson,Fabregas,Song
    —-Bentner,RVP,Arshavin

  193. rico says:

Rasp, sadly I think your list is spot on 😦

We need a flying start this season, not only for the points factor but for confidence.

Ok then, lets all list who WE would like to see start on Saturday 😉

    Mine is

    Almunia

    Sagna TV Gallas Clichy

    Jack Song Cesc Merida

    Arshavin Eduardo

  194. rico says:

Newcastle have had an offer of 4M for Damien Duff from an EPL unamed club – I bet that is from us, cheap offer and unamed club 😉

  195. Rasputin says:

London, I think your line-up is the one he will choose 😦

    rico, I’d much prefer your line-up 😉

  196. raif says:

rico – it cant be us as we only do undisclosed fee’s

  197. rico says:

Ah, good point raif 😉 😉

  198. rico says:

Thanks Rasp, I say hit them with slick football and that line up can do it – I am so chuffed that Merida has been named in the CL squad, I keep trying to get an answer about his loan to Levante, but I get nowhere..

I just think we need to get back to the bobby days, I guess that’s also known as Wengerball – play Arshavin and Eduardo up front and the hoof up top stops, we pass, pass and score 😛

  199. Rasputin says:

Spot on rico. I’m not antti Denilson in any way. I think he’s a good squad player, but Merida looked far more comfortable, effective and creative than him in the Emirates cup. I think Merida is as ready for his chance as Denilson was at the start of last season.

  200. Rasputin says:

Peaches saw Denilson on Wednesday and was shocked at how slight he was. Merida looks powerful and plays powerfully…..

  201. JonJon says:

    evening guys…

that injury list is pretty horrifying to say we havent even started the season yet..

at least it doesnt include gallas cesc AA or dudu…

  202. rico says:

I saw that Rasp, how lucky was peaches, and her son is going for a job at THOF – hope he’s a gooner 😉

Telling you Rasp, Merida is the replacement for Cesc, and I think he will be better – he is bigger and stronger and I reckon he could just prove to be our strong HM …..One day 😉 And of course, Ramsey will be alongside him, just remember it was little old me who typed those thoughts 😉 😉 😉

  203. peachesgooner says:

    Evening all

Maybe this is all a bad dream and we’ll wake up soon and find its the 1st of July and the transfer window is only just opening……..

  204. JonJon says:

for everton i think we should go with

    jack,cesc,song,AA
    nikki rvp

and bring dudu on after an hour

    but we’ll probably see

    eboue denilson song diaby
    cesc
    robin..

    oh joy of joys

  205. rico says:

    Evening JonJon and peaches ..

peaches, could you honestly go through this last transfer month again 😉

  206. JonJon says:

    a couple of positives…

celtic will be a breeze no matter who we play…im that confident…

everton on the other hand could be difficult..but they are slow starters..they dont normally start climbing the table until october/november…

so lets hope this seasons no different…

  207. London says:

I would argue that Denilson wasn’t ready for his chance at the beginning of last season, too much was asked of him and that is what went wrong, causing many people to turn against him. If Denilson wasn’t at Arsenal and our PL hopes were resting the same amount this season on Merida’s shoulders as they were last season on Denilson I would predict that it would take about three weeks before people started turning on Merida and cursing Wenger for not having bought more midfield experience.

We are now in a situation in which Denilson does have that extra experience and it is going to be interesting to see just how much he has improved. My hope naturally is that he has improved a lot, last season I got the impression that he was under strict instructions to always play the simple pass which I suspect lead to him getting the nick name Crab but the interesting thing about his play the season before was that it was far more adventurous. I am hoping that he starts showing off some of that Brazilian flair this season.

  208. London says:

    Evening Peaches

Ave has offered me the opportunity to write the post Everton match report, but as I have written the last two I thought it only right to offer it to you, would you like to write this one?

  209. Rasputin says:

We’ll have to agree to differ London, I think at their current states of development that Merida has more to offer the team than Denilson. They are similar in some ways, but Merida is more creative. Ramsey was fantastic for Wales the other night … he ran the game … but he is maybe a year away from a regular place in the side.

  210. London says:

I’m not sure we actually disagree, Rasp. I like Merida a lot but do you think he has, at this stage in his career, more to offer defensively than Denilson; I am not trying to say that Denilson is anything special, just that at least he has some.

I didn’t see the Wales game but I am very encouraged by what you say about Ramsey.

I don’t really mind which one shines so long as one of them does and if it is Denilson then so be it.

  211. Rasputin says:

It’s more the Denilson/Song combo that doesn’t work for me….

  212. peachesgooner says:

London – you go ahead and write the match report…..I might be watching from behind the couch 😉

  213. peachesgooner says:

    Hi rasp 😛

Song/Denilson definitely the scariest combination and hopefully not necessary 😉

  214. Rasputin says:

    Hi peaches,

We need to find a balance to the side, and that can’t be achieved if players are played out of position. For the triangles to be effective, everyone has to be comfortable on the ball and that doesn’t happen when players are out of position.

  215. rico says:

    So subtle, thank you….

  216. Rasputin says:

Sorry rico, I don’t understand, has someone written something that has upset you?

  217. Big Raddy says:

I was just thinking about May 26 1989. One of the best nights of my life, and certainly the best impromptu street party ever.

Would Mickey Thomas get in this current AFC side ahead of Denilsong – I doubt it.

  218. Rasputin says:

    Hi Raddy, welcome back…

Probably most of the team wouldn’t displace their current counterparts ….. Football’s moved on, but I crave the simplistic naivety of the game in those days. Sadly, we can’t turn back the clock 😦

  219. peachesgooner says:

rico – wouldn’t it be better to wake up tomorrow and find that Ade has gone and Arsene has a long realistic shopping list….. and that no-ones injured …..yet…. 😉

……and my son enjoyed telling the guy who interviewed him that hes not a Gooner 👿

  220. Big Raddy says:

    Thanks Raspautin,

Adams, Bould, definitely Seaman. I would take Smudger as well.

  221. Big Raddy says:

    oops…. it was Lukic wasn’t it ! A Senior moment…

  222. avenell says:

Hey I don’t like to be picky but we had Lukic in goal in 89′ ..
    Alright then I do.. 😉

  223. avenell says:

Haha you beat me to it..

I used to love Mickey T though, he sort of bounced along like he had springs on his feet..

Why he went to the dippers I don’t know..

  224. Big Raddy says:

Must have been GG. Remember how he destroyed Rocky’s International career by showing him who was boss, and number one at AFC. He used to drop him in the run up to Internationals.

GG may have been a fine manager but perhaps lacking in humanity

  225. Rasputin says:

    Raddy,

Are you of the same mind as me in thinking that Almunia is one of the weaker links in the side?

  226. avenell says:

Do you remember when we had nine players in an England team.. we still got slated by the media.. lol.. Must have been 90′ ish..

and that pre season tournament in Miami, we were quite advanced really.

And when we played the France first team on a warm up for them playing scotland.. and we beat them 2-0.. 🙂

  227. Rasputin says:

It’s weird how a moment of humiliation can effect a players career. We’ve seen it with Senderos, but I don’t think spunky was the same after the Ronaldinho World Cup goal from the corner or that spud twat lobbed him from the halfway line in the UEFA cup. Robinson lost it after the own goal pass back against Croatia…

  228. Rasputin says:

Raddy – terrible news … Les Paul has just died …..

  229. Big Raddy says:

I agree Ras. I have little confidence in our keeper, he doesn’t have the gravitas needed. I would take EVDS, Reina or Cech anyday.

Spunky just played too long , and at the end he believed the hype, but for a few years he was awesome. ‘Seaman, Seaman do the twist’ …. happy days

  230. Big Raddy says:

Yes RAs. I have a Fender amp signed by the great man. He was in London at a trade show and I got him to sign it.

Thinking of momentos – I had a guitar signed by Jimi Hendrix, sadly some toerag stole my car with the guitar in the boot. They could have kept the car for all I cared but the loss of the guitar was tragic.

How I got the signature is another story….

  231. Rasputin says:

    Raddy,

The best guitar I ever owned was a Gibson Les Paul tobacco sunburst, like all my guitars, I had to sell it when I fell on hard times. It would be worth a fortune now. You’ll have to tell me the Hendrix story some other time 😕

  232. avenell says:

    Raddy..

A spud mate of mine, his secretary is the daughter of Marshall the amp man.. her dad isn’t very well either. strangely enough the family are closer together now.. 😉

  233. Big Raddy says:

Gibson Les Paul, Marshall amp ….. fine combo.

Looking for the same from AA and Eduardo

  234. avenell says:

    Raddy..

Is a Fender better than a Gibson.. or is it just personal choice?

  235. Rasputin says:

It would be nice to hear him talking about his new signings too 😕

  236. Big Raddy says:

    Avenel. They are both great.

There is an interview with AW by Martin Samuels in the Mail today – due to be published at !0. Looks like a good read, and will provoke an enormous amount of spin (as usual).

BTW how did Eboue get a Belgian passport? I would like two passports ….

  237. gnarleygeorge9 says:

Les Paul is dead, heres Oz’s tribute

  238. gnarleygeorge9 says:

“The very heart of football has been slowly eroded as far as I am concerned, bit by bit, the game I loved as a child has been ruined by money and the day is drawing nearer that it knocks on our door”.

IMO the PL will become a 2nd tier comp as a super Euro league is formed. Everything else in Europe is going that way, football will follow. Its not a matter of if, its more when.

  239. Big Raddy says:

Thanks GG. One of my all-time favourites.

  240. gnarleygeorge9 says:

Howdy BR. Yes mine too, driving down Swanston Street Melbourne Circa 1977.

So are you up for tomorrow? I’m a bit flat about it all really. Not as keen as this time 12 months ago ):

  241. gnarleygeorge9 says:

    😦

  242. Rasputin says:

    Morning GG,

How is it that Angus hasn’t got brain damage after 30 years of dressing like a schoolboy and headbanging for 3 hours every night? 😛

  243. gnarleygeorge9 says:

    G’Day Ras

Maybe he can afford good rehab/medico’s.

  244. Rasputin says:

Hi GG … I’m not happy … a rant of mine reproduced from elsewhere…

“I keep hearing what an honourable club we are because we don’t spend money we don’t have and are ‘doing things properly’, but that sense of fairplay doesn’t seem to extend to being honest with the fans.

The defense offered for lying about finances/player negotiations is that if you tell the truth, you will push the price of a player we are trying to buy up, or the value of one we are trying to sell down … so selective lying is OK 😦 – but it can also be a smokescreen for hiding the truth.

I get worried when I hear statements released that are preparing us for the worst such as ‘it won’t be a financial disaster if we don’t get into the CL’ – I don’t give a hoot about a financial disaster… I’m talking about a footballing disaster. If the Cl is worth £30-£40m, buying a player for £15m that could possibly keep you in the CL seems like good business to me…”

  245. gnarleygeorge9 says:

I’m with you there Ras. Just watching the build up to the PL season down here, The Arsenal don’t even get a mention now. Its all about Liverwurst, Man City/Utd & Chelski.

12 months ago I was counting down the hours/minutes till the 1st gooner kick off, now I feel blaise about it TBH.

  246. gnarleygeorge9 says:

AW is running out of excuses to keep the fans @ bay, about why no big names are coming in. They still might, but I’m 75% sure he won’t sign anyone substantial.

A month ago I was upbeat about the season, now I’m wishing they would just pay the stadium off so we can all move forward. The future is looking good, distant future, but now is average. Sort of mid ’90’s and/or mid ’80’s. Anyway thats my opinion.

  247. gnarleygeorge9 says:

Ok, no one about, its beer o’clock & I’m off to cook a Thai curry for all & sundry.

  248. Rasputin says:

    Have a good evening GG….

  249. peachesgooner says:

    Morning all

This Arsene Wenger interview is certainly going to put the cat amongst the pidgeons – watch out for flying feathers…….I’m off to read it in full.

  250. Rasputin says:

    Morning peaches,

Its PR spin, a preemptive strike in case it all goes tits up!!! …. making our excuses in advance 😦

  251. Rasputin says:

The Spuds signed Bassong for £8m. He can play CB. He’s young and will retain that value for resale or even make a profit …. why didn’t we show any interest?

  252. peachesgooner says:

Hi rasp – I fear you are probably correct in that aassumption, what a shame that he has to do that…..looks like there wasn’t any money afterall 😦

  253. Big Raddy says:

    Of course there is money.

It totally depends upon your long term outlook. MU and the Dippers are prepared to borrow to maintain their CL position – we go another way. So far, it has worked as a business model, but with the rise of MC this may well change. Saying we can survive without CL football is nonsense. We have a huge stadium to fill, and it depends upon the success of the team on the pitch, not the balance sheet.

The assets at THOF far outweigh the debts, so why not borrow against the equity? If one charges top dollar to watch the team, then it behoves AFC to deliver a top dollar team – not 7 great players but 11.

  254. PDT says:

Don’t hold your breath tomorrow. The real season starts after the Celtic return leg.

  255. PDT says:

Anyways, I expect Arshavin to take us to a 2-0 win.

And no, we will not concede.

  256. avenell says:

    Afternoon Roadsters..

    Hi PDT..

I need to decide if I am going to subscribe to ESPN.. is it a good deal?

  257. avenell says:

Haha I love the way the press have a dig at arsenal..

Bentleys wonder goal.. £17 million ffs.. highlight of his career.. lol

    http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Tottenham-s-David-Bentley-faces-100-000-fine-over-drink-driving-arrest-article114367.html

  258. Rasputin says:

    Hi ave, Raddy, PDT,

Everyone keeps talking about the threat of citeh, but Sunderland could be the team to surprise a few this season.

I think Villa are weaker, the spuds will probably finish in the top half, the chavs, pool and manu all slightly weaker …. and we, as we stand with injuries at the moment are also slightly weaker.

So forecasting is difficult. I think we should play every prem game with our best possible 11 as points dropped now will be critical come the end of the season because we have a pretty thin squad. The idea of resting players at the start of the season is ludicrous.

  259. avenell says:

Hi Rasp.. I thought that about portsmouth last year but they never did any good even before they lost ‘arry and the players..

  260. Rasputin says:

    Hi ave,

It’s all to find out, the waitings all but over. If you’ve been listening to the phone in on talksport it has been virtually unanimous that we are not going to finish in the top 4. Not many gooners called in to argue the point. I agree that we always do better when we’re the underdogs, so in a way it is going to help us.

  261. avenell says:

No I haven’t been listening to TS.. I did hear Brazil write us off this morning..

It’s funny but you have been one of the most pessamistic on here recently, but it still hurts when ‘outsiders’ slag the team or write us off..

  262. JonJon says:

    evening boys and girls…

28% of voters said manure and pool are the favs
    19% chelsea
    14% us
    11% city

so they all think we’ll finish top four at least….

lets show em but we need to win tomorrow…

and ive never wanted the spuds to win so much but i want them to stuff liverpool…

spurs will fade away and are capable of a 5 games losing streak…we could do with the dippers hitting the hurdles from the off…

  263. avenell says:

Hi jonjon.. what happened to the post you wrote?

  264. avenell says:

Who did the other 28% of dreamers vote for?

  265. JonJon says:

ive got a couple ave…i had three but one sort of resembled the one you did….so that got binned..

    but

1..i cant get on at work anymore
2..ive been having a shitty internet connection the past week..it takes half hour to post comments..and its cuts off for hours on end at times…
3..ive had issues with mrs jonjon thats been taking alot of my time…(you know what about)

between all of them…i havent had a real chance to get on and put them up…as well as blog properly…

if no-ones got a pre match i can do that…and im off to the everton games so ive got the post match covered…

then i can use what ive got next week…if the situation hasnt improved i’ll try email them to you…and you can put them on

they need sorting though, spell check and such…every time i get backstage i get cut off…so i cant get them on and i havent had the time to wait 4 hours between refreshing….im having to copy and paste all my comments cos ive lost loads…its a pain in the arse trying to keep up with a debate…so i just dont bother half the time..

    very frustrating….

and by the way mrs jonjon has to go for her scans at the end of the month…

oh and my phones dead…i dropped it in the chip fat and i can hear people talking but they cant hear me…i would of phoned you and told you instead of this comment thats taken me 15 minutes to get on… 😦

  266. JonJon says:

    ave.. hahaha

    28% for manure
    28% for pool

sorry should have made it more clear…like my last comment 😉

  267. Rasputin says:

    Hi JonJon,

ave – I don’t feel I’ve been pessimistic, my view is the same as the majority of non-Arsenal supporters and a good percentage of Arsenal supporters…. I have said all along that we’d have to be lucky with injuries to be able to mount a challenge for the prem … sadly we’re already starting the season with too many injuries.

I don’t think we have enough depth in the squad. I don’t think we have a good enough goalkeeper. I think we are two players short of a prem winning squad …. and what concerns me most of all, I don’t think AW knows what his best team is.

We could all pick the first team for the chavs, manure and pool and probably get every player right. We can predict what team we expect AW to pick, but very few of us would pick that team as a first choice … it follows on from last yearis experience.

  268. avenell says:

Is that all jonjon.. 😉 lol.

    You bloody northeners fry everything..

  269. JonJon says:

oh and ive got espn on my package…

if you do it via sky on line (press the red button on the remote on the espn channel and follow the instructions) they knock a 5 note off the 1st months payment…and you can cancel it after the 1st month if you want to…

  270. JonJon says:

    i still ate the chips… 🙂

what would i have had with my eggs… 🙂

i burned my hand though like a right wally….instinct told me to put my hand in and get it…i dont think it wanted to but my head told it to get itself in there… it hurt just a tad… 😦

  271. chaf says:

    Evening all

JJ did the phone stick to the Mars bar?

  272. avenell says:

Jonjon .. London is doihg a match report too, I suggested he did the first one on Sunday.. Then you can do another with your hands on view on Monday if that’s okay.. If you want a pre match.. I’ll put your name down in the widget.. I’ll put it on for you and check it not a problem..

Rasp.. We’ll just have to go with what we have got now..
I do get frustrated with the playing some of the players out of position.. and I bet dudu is on the bench.. 😦 Everton are his favourites..

  273. avenell says:

Oh and jonjon let me be the first to congratulate you on yours and Mrs JJ’s great news.. 🙂

    Hi Chaf..

  274. JonJon says:

    hi rasp…

i think if wenger plays the right players we will be saying we have too much talent…

but as weve discussed before the chance of him playing jack over eboue is tiny…

    at least diabys out too…

and it could be worse…apart from rosicky theres nobody in there that we class as important..nasri is a loss but we can cope….

if it was dudu cesc AA gallas or sagna id be really really worried…

    hi chaf… hahahahaha

the first few bites of them mars fritters are nice but they get sickly after a while…especially if a samsungs stuck to them..

  275. JonJon says:

    thats all good ave…

and cheers mate…im getting used to the idea now…

im not fussed about what it will be…but im kinda hoping that in 16years time we’ll see the next jack wilshire… 🙂

  276. chaf says:

My opinion is reasonably the same as most on here. We are playing for a CL place, and its even harder this year. I’m disappointed we haven’t made more signings, another CH and a DM, but as London says they are all a year older. What gets me is they have a months holiday, a few internationals and a kickabout and we expect them to be better…

I say play Jack. Play him like they played Fab in his first season. And put Merida on his shoulders…

  277. chaf says:

    And congratulations JJ.

  278. peachesgooner says:

Congratulations JonJon and Mrs JonJon – what exciting news 🙂

  279. JonJon says:

    cheers chaf..

i agree jacks gotta play…hes too skilful to sit on the bench and watch eboue in his role instead…

jacks got the ability to unlock any defence, dribble and score goals…

something we lack in the wide area especially with nasri and rosicky out

id have AA on one wing and jack one the other with cesc in the middle with song anchoring…

stick dudu upfront with either robin or nikki and we should be ok….

but something tells me we’ll eboue nikki cesc all played out of position for the first few games and it scares me….

  280. JonJon says:

    cheers peaches..

  281. PDT says:

Someone (Rico?) was asking about Fran yesterday. Looks like he is not going on loan…

  282. JonJon says:

    hi PDT

i gotta pop out for a bit guys i’ll try be back later if not i’ll be on again in the morning…

  283. PDT says:

    Have fun, JonJon…

  284. Rasputin says:

    JonJon,

So sorry for being thick … I completely missed your big news. Welcome to the club mate, don’t listen to all those mates who’ll tell you its the end of your freedom … its the best thing in the world becoming a father …many congratulations

  285. avenell says:

We have already decided on the name Rasp.. ‘Lil Jack Yorkshere’.. 😉

Don’t know what Mrs JJ will say..

  286. Rasputin says:

    Haha ave 🙂

I bet he’ll be great at dribbling 😕

  287. avenell says:

and poor Mrs JJ with a left foot like that..

  288. Freire says:

    Hello everybody,

I’m new to the blog, but I’m always reading everything here. Great post Avenell!
Gonna try to post more in time

  289. avenell says:

Hi Freire.. Thanks mate and welcome to Avenell Road..

It would be great to hear from you and your views, do you really come from the other side of the world, wow?

  290. Freire says:

    Yes, I’m really from Brazil.
Me and some friends are trying to establish a supporters club around here … it’s being quite difficult.
My English is not so good as you all use here, but I try to understand everything. 😛

    Thanks for the welcome!

  291. London says:

    Jonjon

I just noticed that you are going to the Everton game; a match report from someone who went to the game is always more credible than from someone who didn’t, so why don’t you take it and I will do Celtic? But please confirm. I wish I was going….

  292. London says:

    Hello Freire

Where in Brasil are you from? Which team do you support?

  293. London says:

    Jonjon

I thought everyone was congratulating you on getting tickets for the Everton game……..only joking, congratulations.

  294. Freire says:

    Hi London
    I’m from São Paulo.
The only team my heart beats and I cry when the lose is Arsenal FC, but when Arsène and his little boys are in vacations, I support Corinthians. Do you know them? Corinthians owns the biggest supporters club of the world ..they are quite known everywhere.

  295. London says:

    Freire

I know the name Corinthians but very little else; we don’t get a lot of Brasilian national football here. Are Corinthians the biggest club in Sao Paulo? Who is the best player and who is your up and coming star?

  296. London says:

Toure: ‘I left Arsenal to win trophies’

Kolo, do yourself a favour and just shut up.

  297. Freire says:

    London

I reckon Corinthians is the biggest club in the world, because there are supporters clubs all around the world, even in Japan .. believe me, Corinthians is fucking big!

And our best player now is Ronaldo, that Ronaldo who played for Inter Milan, PSV, Barcelona, Real Madrid, etc … and I think our coming star is Dentinho … he’s thin and fast, and he scores when you think he won’t.

But Corinthians is passing a not too good phase. We’ve sold Andre Santos and Christian to Fenerbahçe, and our mid-field is empty now …

  298. London says:

It’s time for my bed Freire, good talking to you, Boa Noite

  299. avenell says:

I must confess I know very little about Corinthians, we are sometimes linked with players from there.that is all I know.

If you don’t mind me asking Freire.. why the Arsenal?

Is it our style of play, because it was mentioned on here the other day we don’t really do the worldwide marketing like Man U or Real Madrid?

    Evening London..

  300. Freire says:

Hahaha, ok mates… I’m going to bed too. See you all, boa noite.

  301. Freire says:

    Avenell,
I can’t tell you why, mate. I don’t know really. I started to watch EPL some years ago, and Arsenal got my heart deeply. I have no one to talk about Arsenal around here, and that makes me sad sometimes, but I don’t mind ….

Arsenal is bigger than you think, mate.

  302. avenell says:

I have spent hours trying to work out why I do too .. lol..

    Nice talking to you..
I am going to hit the sack too.. I am going to watch as much football as I can this weekend .. luvverly jubberly.. 🙂

  303. raif says:

hello,, am i to late? lol

  304. Rasputin says:

    Morning Roadsters and Rooster,

No expectation that there will be any transfer news today. I’ve just read this convoluted but perhaps correct logic …. Arsenal will buy 3 players (the ones we’ve been strongly linked to) but only if we secure CL qualification?

rico – looks like Everton are after your man Steven Taylor 😦

  305. rico says:

    Morning all

Hi Rasp – I cannot believe we are not after him, a big 😦 indeed…

Brighter note though, Merida stays 🙂

Did you see Arsene in his interview yesterday Rasp? He looked a very relaxed, confident man – and its good to finally hear him tell Barca – Ok, if you want Cesc, I will have Messi in exchange…

  306. rico says:

JONJON … drum roll and fanfare when you log on…

In words of a Cliff song……

‘Congratulations’ to you and Mrs JonJon 😛

  307. rico says:

One signing I reckon we will make this week is

    ‘Moses’

  308. gnarleygeorge9 says:

Woke up this morning, as you do, My team Richmond were to play our neighbours Collingwood, we are shit (Richmond) I said to the Gods. “I would rather The Arsenal beat Everton than Richmond win”. Richmond lost by heaps. Kharma says The Arsenal win 3-1. I don’t know, I’ve just got that feeling. lets wait & see 🙂

  309. rico says:

Morning george – at least one Collingwood is on form then 😉

  310. gnarleygeorge9 says:

Off to a 50th tonight; heap of rugby blokes there. Our game starts @ 2.30am. I reckon I should still be there, when I tell them to switch it from the Rah Rah to the footie. Come on you Reds!!!!!

  311. gnarleygeorge9 says:

    Yes rico, like it 😆

  312. London says:

    Morning Rasp

I suppose that does make the most sense. Our lure to Hangeland, for example, is that we can offer him Champions League football, so we need to get it first in order for him to take the bait and really want to play for us.

The thing about the three players we are after is that I wouldn’t have expected anyone of them to play today.

I expect to qualify for the CL, I expect us to sign the three players, or at least two, and I expect them to be eased into the team between now and Christmas, ready to play their respective important roles when the injuries start coming thick and fast.

  313. gnarleygeorge9 says:

    London

Last paragraph: Hope you are right.

Thats it, off out now. Chamoneeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

    Everton 1-3 Arsenal

  314. rico says:

Have a good time george, catch you later

  315. rico says:

    Morning London

The offer of CL to Hangeland, lets hope we get through the group stages aswell, he can’t play until then 😉

  316. London says:

    Morning Rico

    Thanks, I forgot about that.

  317. PDT says:

Congratulations, JJ! Welcome to the right side of the tracks!

  318. rico says:

Morning PDT, great news about Merida, both he and LJ have a big part to play this season – Barazite is another who could just get a few sub appearances

  319. rico says:

    Tricky one today….

    Chelsea v Hull OR
    Aberdeen v Celtic

  320. London says:

Well, I am going for a cowardly 2-2 draw.

  321. London says:

That’s me being cowardly by going for a draw, not the team.

  322. JonJon says:

    is ave about??

ive sent you an e mail mate.

  323. Big Raddy says:

    I am going for a little 1-1.

  324. London says:

  325. JonJon says:

yeah sorry london…ive got it covered if thats your choice…i dont mind… 🙂

  326. London says:

    It’s all yours Jonjon

    Enjoy the game.

I will do the Celtic game unless anyone else really fancies doing it.

  327. avenell says:
