The summer rebuild…A fans perspective..Defence.

Now then boys and girls, today we get to put our Tony Adams thinking caps on!!

The Arsenal defence at the minute seems to be a bit of a weak spot in our team..and Sir Wenger Obe Cbe AFC would seem to agree…

The Arsenal defence conceeded 37 goals in 38 PL games….breaking that down further to 16 at home and 21 away…For a top four side challenging for the PL title that is simply not good the PL table suggests…

Manutd conceeded 24, Liverpool 27 and Chelsea 24…

A successful team not only has to be good with the ball, but without the ball too…If we want to catch our rivals next season these figures have to improve in our favour…in simple terms..we need to tighten up…

Personally…i cant understand why…if we break our 1st choice back four down..we have two fullbacks who were both in the PL team of the year 2007-08… we have an experienced French international whos won many trophies with Chelsea and on his day is probably one of the best CB’s in the world…and we have Kolo…Arsenal through and through and was part of the invincible defence….

On paper we have probably one of the best defences in the world…even Carlsberg would do well to better that defence…

My opinion is that we have too main problems with our defence….

1…No quality arial presence..

2…No quality backup for injuries…

So what do we do???

If we look at our defence next season and break it down we have…

LB…Clichy, Gibbs, Troare.

RB…Sagna, Eboue

CB..Gallas, Kolo, JD, Song, Senderbramble, Fishhead.

Gallas and fishead can play LB and Kolo can play RB (not very well)…Its fair to say Gallas is the only one who can adapt to the FB position…

We have too many average CB’s, we have too many players that cover the LB position and not enough quality at RB

We dont need Troare..Clichy is the first choice and Gibbs has impressed as an able deputy..Troare is surplus to requirements…Senderos has proved that he isnt quick enough to handle the PL..and he is mentally weak and has moments of madness so hes out of the door too…Fishead is over the hill..he isnt of top 4 quality anymore..either 1st choice or backup…thats why Fergie got rid and thats why we should too…Eboue has pushed the fans to the limit this season…time and again we have been subjected to some woeful performances and he should be sold…

So thats Troare, Senderos, Fishead and Eboue….That looks like an awful lot of players but we are still left with the first choice defence…

So who do we bring in???

Sagna will need cover at RB…so how about Glen Johnson??? Or Micah Richards…with Richards we get a gooner and a RB/CB all in one go so maybe hes the best option??? Or both..we could use Troare as a makeweight for Johnson????

The CB positions are still pretty strong with Gallas, Kolo, JD and Song…but we still need a ball winner and my shout is Lescott…strong, quick and good in the air and the mainstay of Evertons impressive defence in recent seasons…then Wenger gets his wish of last season of a dominant CB who’s left footed!!!!!!

That leaves us with a defence of

RB…Sagna, Johnson, Richards

LB..Clichy, Gibbs, Lescott

CB..Gallas, Lescott, Kolo, Song, JD, Richards

Now we have a more balanced stronger, quicker defence with arial presence and quality backup for places…

Over to you Roadsters…or Roasters…Or Roosters…depending on what part of the country your from!!!!

    Morning JonJon,

Good work – a thought provoking post! ….. it would get you lynched elsewhere 😉

Do you think players like Johnson and Richards would be happy as back-up? Johnson has been sidelined before and has really improved with regular first team football. We want players with ambition – being happy as back-up with a big team isn’t great for a career – even Pleb has realised that 😛

  2. JonJon says:

    hi rasp…

i agree….i dont think johnson would be happy playing second fiddle…but i think with richards being a gooner and gallas ageing he could be convinced to join us…

  3. Rasputin says:

I haven’t seen much of Richards that has impressed me this season. The potential he showed a couple of years ago when he broke into the England team was immense. Maybe he needs the right manager (AW?) to get him back on track. I don’t think AW has ever publicly expressed interest in Richards.

Today we’re linked with Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko as an £8million replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor…… hhmmmmmm?

  4. rico01 says:

    Morning Roasters 😉

Top notch JJ, that is going to take some thinking about 😉

The post is clever, only one part of our team have been broken down, and our defence have been exposed – plenty of players, most of which are not up to the standard we need.

Going on from that, I think our whole squad is the same, we have a few great players, a few pretty good players – and then we have Ade !!

I would definately go for the Traore/Johnson swap 😛

  5. rico01 says:

And Eboue wants to go, as does Senderos

  6. rico01 says:

I think Richards is really unhappy and his game reflects that – he needs a change 😉

The Sun suggest we are going to get Yaya, and Arsene has said he would play CH !!

  7. kelsey says:

Well that’s a first a sentence half in German and half in Spanish(see earlier comment this morning)

not easy to write a post at the moment as everything is about speculation and no hard facts as to see who is staying and who is leaving, and then that again depends on which direction Wenger will point his radar for reinforcements, because in my mind we have to reduce quantity and add quality.

the tabloids are having a field day with Kaka still being touted as the World’s most expensive transfer target(my money is still on Real Madrid) whilst the UK is in turmoil with a government trying to oust it’s own leader.

Kolo is still being linked to city and YaYa to us, a bit bizarre. then we have more speculation about Eboue being linked to Inter for 24 million. yes 24 million.

IMO the only way we will challenge is to tighten up the defence first and foremost, and that includes Almunia(as we won’t get another keeper) commanding his area and developing a better understanding with his defenders.Having said that through injury we have not always been allowed the luxury of our first choice defence, which again is subject to debate.

So as i see it, Gallas and Toure need to stay with AN Other coming in to interchange with either of them.

I think Ade is going, because we are being linked with a number of strikers.hopefully RVP will get sorted one way or another, and not have a Flamini situation in a yers time.
Iwould get rid of Silvestre(but i doubt the boss will as he has no transfer value, Senderos appears to be in no man’s land, and Djorou still is work in progress.

i know many are crying out for Vela to get more first games next season(only one PL start) but don’t be surprised if he is either loaned out again or only gets occasional games.Nic, has finally got his head right and if Ade goes the other option is that no other striker will be bought, providing RVP stays.

Its just opinion, from a fans point of view.

  8. Rasputin says:

    Morning rico,

Have your Roosters got wet plumage? 😉

  9. JonJon says:

i agree again rasp…richards has immence potential and can be improved in the right team…

i dont know anything about he any good??

  10. Rasputin says:

    This is from NN

“Arsenal are favourites to beat Manchester City to the signature of Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko as an £8million replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor.

Bosnian striker Dzeko, 23, hit 26 goals in 32 games in helping fire Wolfsburg to the Bundesliga title and Arsenal have registered their interest with his club.

Gunners coach Boro Primorac has been out to watch the 6ft 3in target man and has given glowing reports to Arsene Wenger.”

  11. JonJon says:

    morning rico.. thanks 😉

kelsey… the german/spanish thing was intentional.. i normally say bonjour mein amigos but i fancied a change 😉

as for yaya… why would he leave barca??

  12. JonJon says:

    thats interesting rasp…

    tall prolific and a winner….

  13. rico01 says:

Not yet Rasp, but I don’t think it will long, its very dark here and looks like the rain will soon set in. Annoying the workman is finishing the kitchen off today, the paint smells and the windows are open – and I am bloomin cold …

I wonder if Robinho will stay at City, he isn’t very happy is he – and I really dont think they are going to be a club that attracts big players from abroad. Any player who is prepared to play in the North of the country will always choose Manure & Liverpool over them surely ?

  14. rico01 says:

JJ – to play alongside his brother 😉

  15. JonJon says:

who would want robinho???? especially for those wages???

i think he’s stuck at citeh

  16. Rasputin says:

    Morning kelsey,

On the CB pairing of Kolo and Gallas…… Gallas will be another year older and Kolo is good again but not as good as he has been in the past – will he ever regain that form? – and in what state will he return from the ACN I wonder? JD has always improved when he has had a run of games, but that is not likely when the other two are fit and available.

  17. JonJon says:

rico…your rays of sunshine are shining brightly this morning.. 😉

  18. rico01 says:

Dzeko sounds like a good one, and a realistic target as he is pretty cheap – and he won’t be missing for the ACON ( unlike Ade who has been missing all season )

  19. rico01 says:

Chelsea will go for him JJ, they wanted him last season i think – he will be like Anelka and probably sulk to get a move 😉

  20. JonJon says:

we need to keep gallas no matter what…if that means letting kolo go then so be it but i hope they both stay as gallas only has a couple of years left in him… and the new CB should be the partner for gallas..for now…

let kolo fight for his place back…if he loves the club that much and he still has what it takes he will succeed…if he doesnt…the decision to buy a new CB will be justified…

  21. JonJon says:

your probably right rico…chelsea wont get kaka so they’ll settle for robinho..

  22. Rasputin says:

If there is any truth to ‘yesterday’s rumour’

“As negotiations between Ajax and Arsenal continue regarding a potential summer transfer, Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen is reluctant to comment on whether he will move to Emirates Stadium.

Vermaelen, 23, has emerged as a likely summer signing for The Gunners as Arsene Wenger finally looks to recruit the commanding centre back that he first identified as a priority 12 months ago.”

…. it could be that either Gallas or Kolo are offski.

I can’t see Yaya joining us. He was trialled in 2005 and I can’t see Mr Stubborn paying for a player he could have had ona free….

  23. rico01 says:

The Dippers are in the S*****s then 😛

  24. rico01 says:

I think it will be Gallas Rasp, hope I am wrong though – he has had a season of turmoil, his outburst, losing the armband and having to read that Kolo doesnt like him… 😉

I wouldn’t be surprised if his injury wasnt as bad as we all think, and he just had enough. I also have a feeling he will go to PSG and join up with his old mater Makalalee (spelling)

  25. rico01 says:

Steve Bruce wants Darren Bent at Sunderland. Its funny isn’t it, having listened to peaches talk about Bent, I have really felt for the guy – I hope he heads north and gets treated a lot better..

  26. JonJon says:

if we lose gallas we need a dominant CB in there who has proved himself…this is were i think the lad from belguim would be a risk…

yeah rico…the dippers are in the poo poo..oh well.. 😉

  27. London says:

Jonjon good post and good theory but for me it is beyond the realms of believability that Kolo would accept being third choice and with it long periods sat on the bench.

If he expressed the slightest interest in leaving I reckon at least four top European clubs would be vying for his signature tomorrow.

This is the biggest problem that any club face including United; finding quality defenders who are satisfied sitting on the bench for what could be the best part of the season.

  28. Rasputin says:

How many of our squad had a good season based on their won standards?

    Almunia – OK
    Gallas – OK
    Kolo – OK
    JD – patchy
    Sylvestre – patchy
    Clichy – not his best
    Sagna – patchy
    Cesc – not his best
    Theo – disappointing
    Nasri – OK
    Denilson – OK
    Song – improved
    Ade – disappointing
    RVP – improved
Nik – not good 1st half, much better in the second

We’ve actually done quite well if my assessment is accurate, but why have so many of our players been so ‘under par’ this season?

  29. Rasputin says:

    won standards = own standards

  30. Rasputin says:

    Left out

    Diaby – disappointing
    EE – patchy

  31. JonJon says:

i agree it is a problem in practice…but with the ACN coming up we will lose both kolo and song…

are silvestre, JD, and maybe senderos good enough???

id say no to 2 of the 3..

which leaves us only two quality CB’s at a key period of the campaign…id say we need another…

and if we lose gallas…we need two…

  32. rico01 says:

Rijkaard is now the manager of Galatasary !!

  33. JonJon says:

you was right the 1st time rasp…EE and diaby need to be left out…

  34. Big Raddy says:

    Morning All.

Let’s be honest here, any player leaving WHL is going to a better place. I would rather play for Yeovil than Sp*rs.

    Good post JJ.

I have written many times that it is not the personnel that cause our defensive problems, but their organisation. How often do we concede headed goals? More than other teams? I think not. It is the distance between the defenders that causes our problems.

This I put down to having such inexperienced DM’s, who just do not give enough cover. Whilst accepting we are an offensive minded team, we also have to learn how to insure against counter-attacks.

I see the solution being to introduce a ball-playing CB in place of Kolo (perhaps Song) and sign a proper, experienced DM – Yaya would be great but unlikely.

I would give WG one more year and hope that JD can improve with say 15 games a season, to the point where he reaches his potential..

Glenn Johnson is a fine player, which shows what happens when a player is forced to re-assess. He was rubbish at the Chavs because of his arrogance.A spell at Pompey and he has returned to the player who looked so great at WHU.

Same seems to be the problem with Micah Richards. I would love to sign him, but he could be an expensive disaster.

  35. London says:

Silvestre has one more year on his contract my guess would be that Wenger will just let it run down.

Silvestre will still make good back up for the back up the problem is that Wenger needs to buy better back up because the back up we have is not strong enough.

I couldn’t resist that: it made me laugh as I thought of it.

  36. Big Raddy says:

    What connects

    Alan Sunderland
    Charlie George
    Fran Jeffers
    John Hollins
    Brian Marwood
    and Jimmy Rimmer?

  37. Rasputin says:

Morning Raddy – are you advocating that we employ the services of a defensive coach to sort out the organisational problems? Do you think Arsene will work with another coach who is involved in decision making? He described PR as ‘backroom staff – we don’t have an assistant manager…

  38. Big Raddy says:

Thanks for your reply yesterday. I accept your points but remain in conflict !

To be taken up at another time perhaps

  39. rico01 says:

Nice one Rasp – isnt it sad that none can be reported as having an ‘outstanding’ season 😦

So much has gone on prior to the saeson and during it, and I think it has really ‘got to’ the whole squad. The Ade summer, the Gallas stuff, the booing of Ebooe, Kolo ‘Mr AFC’ saying he wanted to go etc etc

This summer is so important, if Ade, Eboue and Senderos truly want out, then they need to be gone within the next couple of weeks – we cant have another summer full of uncertainty and speculation.

Nik has really sorted himself out, he has made it clear what his intentions are, and where he wants to be. Many of our team could learn a lesson from him. You may not know this, but I have not ever been a real fan of his 😉 But if his attitude is backed up by his football next season, I may very well become his biggest fan next season. Also Theo has ‘bigged’ himself up, and like Nik, we could be in for a treat next season with those two

  40. Big Raddy says:

Absolutely Rasputin. I would look to sign a top International defensive coach immediately. And I would give Fabio Capello a call to ask who he would recommend.

  41. rico01 says:

    Morning Raddy – Ipswich ?

  42. London says:

ACN…..Damn…must admit the reality of loosing Kolo and Song had not hit home…….hhhmmmmm……my worry meter is rising.

  43. Rasputin says:

You’re right rico and AW himself blamed the poor early season form on the disruptive influence of the summer shenanigans. We did make some mistakes last summer -its up to Ivan to ensure we don’t get a repeat performance. So far its 10/10 for the AA deal 🙂

  44. rico01 says:

mmmmmm – i know i am wrong, what is it Raddy

  45. JonJon says:

    morning raddy..

its fair to say we need a defensive coach…

wenger seems to leave defensive organisation out of training.. 😉

london that comment had me in stitches…backup for the backup 😆

  46. Rasputin says:

They all played for England only once…..

  47. peachesgooner says:

    Morning all

Have the head-ache from hell this morning so treat me gently please 😉

London – which top four clubs do you think would want to sign Toure tomorrow?

  48. Rasputin says:

    Am I right Raddy?

  49. peachesgooner says:

rico – is that true, you weren’t a big fan of Nikki, our very own Pink Fairy 😉

  50. Rasputin says:

Morning peaches – sorry to hear you’ve got a bad head – I’m typing this very gently so it whispers to you… 🙂

  51. kelsey says:

They all had their wisdom teeth removed to avoid groin strain, Raddy 🙂

  52. rico01 says:

    Morning peaches 🙂 SHOUT!!!! (sorry 😉 )

Perez has now announced they are going to try and get Ribery, and he also says that AW told him he was committed to Arsenal and is not looking to leave – thanks but not thanks – pipe and smoke it come to mind 😉

  53. peachesgooner says:

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha – thats very funny kelsey 😆

  54. peachesgooner says:

Guess what – when Ades agent had a meeting with AW this week they didn’t talk about selling him because there aren’t any offers for him 😦

  55. Big Raddy says:

    Very good Rasputin.

    Here’s an easy one….

    Our first £1m player?

  56. Big Raddy says:

Why are they called ‘wisdom teeth’?

  57. London says:

I think a new defensive coach is a brilliant idea. Wasn’t Keown employed in the role for a while. I wonder why he stopped? The only reason I can think of is that Wenger didn’t see it as being benificial enough to want to continue. But it’s hard to imagine that the post was such a failure that it was deemed no longer necessary.

  58. London says:

Madrid,Juventus,Milan,Inter,Valencia,Sevilla…I could go on but the most significant team that could be added to this list is Barcelona.

I assume your reason for posing the question is because you doubt the premise….as many have just said above….with a decent defensive coach….Kolo could be so much better and I suspect the coaches of the teams that I listed are well aware of that.

  59. kelsey says:

    Raddy explanation:

Wisdom teeth are commonly extracted when they affect other teeth—this impaction is colloquially known as “coming in sideways.”[3] Most adults have four wisdom teeth, but it is possible to have more or fewer. Absence of one or more wisdom teeth is an example of hypodontia. Any extra teeth are referred to as supernumerary teeth.

Note “coming in sideways” to avoid groin strain

  60. peachesgooner says:

In 2006 when we got to the Champs Lge final we had progressed through the latter stages with a patched up back four. The little shit was injured and Flamini had fulfilled the LB role, Sol Campbell – swooooon – was injured and Big Phil was Kolos partner with EBOUE at RB.

We had the best defence in the whole of the Champs Lge!!!!!!!! Was this because this group of players were the best back four imaginable in the whole of Europe???? I don’t think so. I think the defence was solid because the midfield was strong and able to defend when required.

We need the best defenders we can get our hands on but their strength also lies in the mid-field IMHO

  61. rico01 says:

I know Raddy, I know – its because they grow when one is at an age to be getting wise 😉

  62. rico01 says:

woops – should have F5 before answering 😦

  63. JonJon says:

it is true that keown was our defensive coach during the 2006 CL run where we didnt conceed for 9-10 games

and that was with a defence of EE senderos kolo and flamini

rumour has it that wenger didnt want him to continue because of his disciplined approach and his battlecry techniques..they were upsetting the players…plenty of mental strength then????

  64. rico01 says:

peaches – spot on, we used to have a strong pacey midfield – now we have Song who is a tad sluggish, Denilson who passes to a teamate nearby to ensure his stats are good, and Diaby who looks the part, but sadly isn’t –

Song has the ability to be a ‘Gilberto’, Gilberto wasnt quick, his passing was sometimes dreadful. But Gilberto could read the game as easy as i can read the Beano, and if Song could grasp that his pace, or lack of it wouldnt be so much of a issue.

I actually wouldn’t be terribly sad if Diaby or Denilson left

  65. Big Raddy says:

I like that explanation Rico. Kelsey’s is too intellectual – and it didn’t explain why they are called ‘wisdom’ teeth !

Or what happens to one’s wisdom when they are removed. I guess we will get an idea from Kelsey’s future posts 🙂

  66. London says:

I couldn’t imagine there is a single Arsenal supporter on the planet that would disagree with that statement….well, apart from the swoooon bit.

  67. peachesgooner says:

London – I questioned your statement because as far as I remember no-one came in with an offer for him when he announced in January that he wanted away.

I’m hoping that Gallas is going to stay, but I expect him to have more time out with injuries so Toure is going to have to step up isn’t he? If the partnership is Toure and Song that will leave us trully in the shit when the African cup takes them both. You already highlighted the problem of buying a defender to sit on the bench a few weeks ago in your post……..its a problem

  68. peachesgooner says:

Oh London – don’t you just love him too 😉 I wish he’d kept his head together and we’d still have him 😦

  69. London says:

Kolo wasn’t seriously put on sale.

  70. rico01 says:

    Thats funny Raddy 😉

Many people have said that good old sentence to me ‘ You aint ‘arf thick’ – I say, thats because I have only had half of my widsom teeth remaining 😉

London – Sol is a fine looking chap with huge legs (calm down peaches) his looks seemed to vastly improve to, once he donned the red and white – he never seemed to look so suited to a white shirt 😉

  71. peachesgooner says:

JonJon – I already said that in my 11.11, keep up 😆

  72. Rasputin says:

    I’m off for a while – catch up later…..

  73. London says:

Campbell asked to leave, something about wanting to make a new start…boy friend problems I think.

  74. peachesgooner says:

rico – I agree with you on Song, I’m hoping hes going to excel at reading the game in the way that Gilberto could. Gilberto was so good at ‘mopping up’ – often he mopped up and then gave the ball away but then went after it again…..fantastic…….Oh I miss him too now 😦

  75. peachesgooner says:

Bye rasp – have fun 😆

  76. Irishgunner says:

    Morning all.

    Good post.

If I were AW I’d do the following:

Sagna/Eboue – Fine by me (so that means keeping Eboue)
    Clichy/Gibbs – Fine by me

The problem is at CB so try to hold on to Gallas and Kolo and try to find a way of keeping both happy.

Bring in a top quality, big mad angry “I’ll break my face to clear the ball” type, have Song and Djourou as back up too, sell Senderos and Silvestre and hire Martin Keown again.

    Simples 😀

  77. peachesgooner says:

London – we have an unwritten rule that we don’t discuss Sol Campbell – swoooooooon – in that way 😉

  78. Irishgunner says:

Where did my post go? 😕

  79. peachesgooner says:

Morning Irish – how are you? Sorry I missed you tesyerday

  80. peachesgooner says:

    😳 yesterday

  81. rico01 says:

morning irish, sorry about your comment, its up now 😉

  82. Rasputin says:

    Released you Irish…. laters………

  83. Irishgunner says:

    I’m good Peaches thanks.

I wrote a long post there (well medium to long) about my defensive strategy and it disappeared 😥

  84. Irishgunner says:

    Thanks Rasputin

  85. JonJon says:

top of the morning to ya irish…

  86. peachesgooner says:

Wow – so many cooks – what shall we have for lunch 🙂

  87. Irishgunner says:

    Cheers Rico 😀

We got the chickens but they were being bold, have settled now though.

  88. Irishgunner says:

Top of da morning Jon Jon be jaysus tis a good one 😀

  89. peachesgooner says:

Irish – are you somewhere different today, your IP is not the same as yesterday, maybe thats why you didn’t come straight on………

  90. JonJon says:

To be sure to be sure…irish

wheres rico gone?? did she see my link and faint???

the VillaMan could be up for grabs… 😉

  91. Irishgunner says:

Nope I’m still at home, same computer, same address.

We had a problem with our broadband and the telephone company had to fix it, would that have anything to do with it?

  92. Irishgunner says:

What is Zapata like? We are been linked with him again.

  93. JonJon says:

Zapatas supposed to be the dogs bollox in italy…

strong and quick…loads of people wax lyrical about him but ive only seen him play for columbia…he was ok…good in the air…

  94. Irishgunner says:

I don’t think I’ve seen him play, for Columbia or Udiense.

  95. rico01 says:

JJ – I have read that link, wouldnt it be wonderful if we could get Villa and Silva 😛

Irish – glad the chickens are settled – one of ours has that bloomin old red mite, she looked very funny last night all powdered up before bedtime 😉

  96. Irishgunner says:

Its terribly novel London ha ha

I’m more a glass half full person myself, no point in being miserable.

  97. Irishgunner says:

Ours kept trying to escape Rico so we had to cover the whole top of the coop with mesh. Bold birdies….

The cats haven’t seen chickens before and are intrigued by them ha ha they just stare at them.

  98. peachesgooner says:

I reckon David Villa would love to come and play with Cesc – only I’m sure I was saying that this time last year 😦

  99. Irishgunner says:

Peaches – I can think of another forward who would love to play for Arsenal, some young French guy, now what is his name again? 😉

  100. peachesgooner says:

    Its ok I am only joking…. 😆 😆 😆

  101. peachesgooner says:

    Mmmmmmnnnnnnn – Benzema 😉

  102. rico01 says:

Cats and chicken are a fun mix – ours make a real racket when the neighbours cat comes over, and he then runs runs off scared, but very different for you with your own..

  103. Irishgunner says:

    That’s his name Peaches 😆

Rico – there is a bully of a cat in our area, always picking on my babies 😈

  104. rico01 says:

Irish, the chickens will soon fight back, trust me 🙂

  105. Irishgunner says:

No its the big bully cat at my cats 😦

He is a horrible cat, if I catch him 👿 he runs when he sees me coming

  106. rico01 says:

Interesting – womens footie is really taking off at last

  107. Irishgunner says:

There was meant be a better women’s league starting in England next season but it has got postponed. It will be the year after I think.

The WPS in America seems to be going well, Kelly Smith is doing really well over there.

  108. Irishgunner says:,19528,11670_5364993,00.html

This is interesting enough. It seems Perez was only ever interested in Wenger or Pellegrini and as I’ve said before and Perez alluded to, they are both similar managers in so far as working on budgets and bringing in young players.

Maybe Perez is more serious this time although still buying the big names.

  109. JonJon says:

perez wants to build a future at madrid and not just keep buying stars …he wants to create stars too…but he doesnt want to wait 5 years before they win anything so thats why the 100mil plus is coming into play now…

    first they buy a team…then they create a team…

  110. Irishgunner says:

That’s what I’m thinking too Jon Jon

He seems to be going down a different path to his first term and by all accounts AW seemed impressed by what he wanted to achieve.

  111. rico01 says:

Come on you lot, keep up, I put that about Perez and Wenger earlier 😉 😉

  112. JonJon says:

    sorry rico… 😆

  113. Irishgunner says:

    My apologies 😆

  114. JonJon says:

newsnow is saying that yaya is valued at 12mil

im sorry but i cant see barca parting with yaya for just 12mil

  115. rico01 says:

  116. rico01 says:

I wish we had swapped Hleb for him last summer JJ, when is Yaya’s contract up, that may be why he is valued at just 12M

  117. rico01 says:

If he signed a three year contact, its up next summer 🙂

  118. JonJon says:

    really rico??

theres a chance then..but do we need another african??

  119. rico01 says:

I dont know how long a contract he signed in 07, but often they are 3 years, so fingers crossed JonJon.

I have heard or read somewhere that the ACON is moving to the summer months after the 2010 one, so at least it would only be for one year. I think Yaya is the best out there for us, especially as he can play both CH and CM – and Wenger loves those players 😉

  120. Irishgunner says:

If its Yaya Toure then we need another African 🙂

  121. London says:

Where, oh where did that comment go….hhhmmmmmm

  122. peachesgooner says:

London – I took them both out, yours and mine as I thought it was agreed that we wouldn’t be alluding to other sites anymore 🙂

  123. peachesgooner says:

    Top post Irish 😉

Its really heart-warming when you see the pictures in the Arsenal programmes of the players doing good work for charity.

They don’t get enough recognition in my view, well done to you for drawing attention to it 😛

  124. Irishgunner says:

I’ll draw attention to it if anyone reads it 😆

  125. JonJon says:

i think when footballers put something back into the community it has to be admired…

at such a young age too…

    much respect…

  126. kelsey says:

you really are a great person to have blogging with us.You are articulate, write good varied posts, are up for a laugh, do not offence easily. All the attributes of a good person.Well done.

Reading your article,as you well now, tabloids sell when they can uncover some scandal or whatever, good things people do,don’t generate sales, but I really wish our footballers and their agents were literally banned from talking to the press on what appears a daily basis. Most things get taken out of context and often are contradictory.

  127. kelsey says:

    sorry….. offend easily.

  128. Irishgunner says:

Thanks Kelsey, that’s such a nice thing to say 😳

It is probably written in to some form of contract that the players and managers etc have to speak to the media which is fine except they all have an agenda.

Wenger’s and Cesc’s words get misconstrued so often which is bad enough but what is worse is people are so ready to believe it.

It is an evil we have to live with I’m afraid.

My cousin used to be a deputy editor with a leading tabloid in Ireland and she told me they literally just care about making money, her job was to make money not to tell the truth or inform the public. She has since left to freelance but she said sadly that is the way of the world and if she wanted to keep her job she had to conform.

  129. JonJon says:

im sorry guys but im nipping that converation in the bud before it gets out of hand…

when peaches returns we’ll talk about this properly but until then we’ll keep it arsenal…

  130. JonJon says:

just to let you know i didnt mean you conversation irish/kelsey 😉

  131. Irishgunner says:

Anymore about us signing this Belgian Vermuealen?

Seems to have died in the water a bit.

  132. JonJon says:

i think it was a cae of your media theory Irish

tonay adams mentioned him and the media jumped on it…

  133. JonJon says:

    tonay??? 😉

  134. Irishgunner says:

It only really appeared on and spread a bit from that but even the tabloids didn’t jump on it too much.

Even they must think that Arsenal buying a player in the first week of the transfer window is stretching the realms of belief 😆

  135. kelsey says:

i will tell you a true story, but I have to be careful what I say as it effected me,my wife and my kids.

Lets call my wife A, who had been in the public limelight some 30 years ago, even front page news.Anyway from time to time she was asked to appear on television or more recently a national tabloid would want to run a story about her,and her life today (30 years later) and i stress the article was meant to be about our family life NOW. Anyway this journalist spent all day at our house taking pictures of us, our house, our children etc.the following week the article appeared it was actually the Female section in

the daily Mail, and the content had nothing to do whatsoever with the interview my wife had given, and it was libelous .Several of our friends had read it and telephoned or wrote in to the then editor, and we threatened legal proceedings(having taken legal advice) and eventually an apology was written in the Mail and they settled out of court for a considerable amount of money.

Not trying to be cagey or trying to impress you, just to let you know that we have experienced the media and their various exploits several times. In general, not a very good impression.

  136. JonJon says:

how much do you think the dzeko in ade out story is true???

    i give it 60-40 against…

  137. kelsey says:

i just posted a long comment to irish, and that has disappeared.Any reason.

  138. JonJon says:

cheers kelsey.. much appreciated mate 😉

  139. JonJon says:

its on kelsey… i dunno why it didnt appear straight but its on…i didnt even have to release it maybe the comments are slow…

  140. Rasputin says:

I don’t know who wrote this line but it’s priceless 😳

“Half the Tottenham team seemingly incapable of finding anyone else to sleep with but Danielle Lloyd.”

  141. Irishgunner says:

    That’s awful Kelsey.

You trusted someone and left them into your home and this is the thanks you get. I hope it is settled now.

Actually the Daily Mail is one of my pet hates. Both in Ireland and England it is racist and xenophobic.

Oddly enough I wrote a bit of a rant about “Hatchet Man” that works on their website a while back.

  142. Rasputin says:

Hi JonJon … I’m sure you are aware that line is one of Irish’s little gems!…

  143. kelsey says:

All settled now, interesting rant.Unfortunately the Daily Mail is the biggest selling UK paper over here and the Sunday papers never have the colour supplements.I believe they are all printed in Madrd. I don’t but newspapers anymore.

  144. Irishgunner says:

    That was me Rasp 😆

  145. avenell says:

    Afternoon Roadsters..

Welcome to Avenell Road Irish, it is a pleasure.. 😉

Kelsey.. I have been releasing your comments they are going into spam for some reason..
there was no banned words and your IP address is not in any moderation.. so bear with it.. It isn’t anything I have done..

  146. Irishgunner says:

Cheers Avenell – thanks for having me

  147. JonJon says:

Yes rasp, i thought id seen the comment before….i was trawling the comments to find it…

  148. Rasputin says:

    Pasted from NN…….

“Ashley Cole will be rewarded with a new contract at Stamford Bridge in an attempt to ward off interest from Barcelona.”

….. interesting, the little weiner – and Cheryl in particular, may well fancy the glitz of Barcelona. If it were true (and I very much doubt it!), it would be very funny to se him walk out on the chavs…..

  149. JonJon says:

    afternoon ave….

have you been trimming the bush today??

  150. kelsey says:

I have another spam and chips, spam and eggs and spam and spam comment yet again in moderation. maybe the distant from here to Eire is effecting my last comment..Too many people on the controls, perhaps.

  151. JonJon says:

if barca told cole they wanted him and were to offer him more he would go…we all know that for sure…

  152. Irishgunner says:

Chelsea were after Dani Alves a while back and Barca tied him down to a contract to ward them off.

At least Cole is a very good player but I don’t get this thing about Dani Alves, he can run very quick and …….

  153. Rasputin says:

Is that ave or is my computer about to crash? 😳

  154. avenell says:

Yeah, I’m about Rasp.. How you doing?

Kelsey, your comments are going into spam straight away.. If it was a setting that one of us have put on they would go into moderation..

There are no settings against you, your name, your IP address or your Email address.

Sorry, but I cannot see why you get picked on..

  155. Rasputin says:

Irish – talking of hacks amd newspapers in general, we know that the Mail and the Sun are garbage, are tere any reporters/papers you do give credence to. I used to like Henry Winter but peaches says Martin Samuel is better?

  156. JonJon says:

sorry guys but you know what happens when we talk about cashley

  157. Rasputin says:

I’m good thanks ave. Did you get all your car problems sorted?

  158. Irishgunner says:

I buy the Sunday Times, I like that newspaper and in particular the magazines in it.

I do admit to reading The Daily Star on a rare occasion after a big game to see what Eamon Dunphy has to say, he’s very funny – can’t decide on anything.

  159. Irishgunner says:

I like Winter and Samuel although I don’t read Samuel as much now.

Ron Liddle is funny just because he has to work in a dig at Leeds any way he can.

  160. Rasputin says:

You’re gonna upset rico JonJon if you keep putting all these youtube clips up that slow the site down……. We may be treated to one of her brilliant mini-posts, the last one was Grrrrr, I suggest that lookinmg out of the window, the next should be entitled BBrrrrrrrr!! 😆

  161. avenell says:

The car went to France on time, but with one door lock working on the passenger side and when they get back I have to fight to get some money back from the parts supplier.. 😦

Sorry Jonjon.. Hi mate.. you okay?
Keep your eye in the spam, Kelsey seems to get stuck in there for some reason.. It is frustrating when your comment doesn’t appear and you cannot hold a blog conversation.

  162. Rasputin says:

Leeds and Newcastle are such soft targets – and of course the spuds…. how many ex-players can we buy back this week? Most successful manager of late – Martin Johl, got them to 5th place twice so they sacked him and brougt in Ramos …. priceless 😛

  163. Irishgunner says:

    I see you Kelsey 😉

  164. kelsey says:

  165. Irishgunner says:

The Spuds have had 13th managers since AW came is it??

Jol was doing well for them and they messed it up big time.

  166. Rasputin says:

Spud managers during AW’s reign … its pitiful…

    Gerry FRANCIS 1994 – 1997
    Christian GROSS 1997 – September 1998
David PLEAT (Caretaker) September 1998 – October 1998
    George GRAHAM October 1998 – March 2001
    David PLEAT (Caretaker) March 2001
    Glenn HODDLE April 2001 – September 2003

    Martin JOL (Head Coach) 6 November 2004 – 25 October 2007
    Clive ALLEN / Alex INGLETHORPE (Caretaker) 25 October 2007 – 29 October 2007
    Juande RAMOS (Head Coach) 29 October 2007 – 25 October 2008
Clive ALLEN / Alex INGLETHORPE (Caretaker) 26 October 2008
    Harry REDKNAPP

  167. Rasputin says:

Can’t decide whether Pleat or Hoddle is the biggest fruitloop on that ‘distinguished list’ 😆

  168. kelsey says:

    Thanks ave,

but it is a bit pointless as you say trying to have a conversation if one goes continually into spam.

    informe, informe.

  169. Irishgunner says:

    Gerry FRANCIS 1994 – 1997
    Christian GROSS 1997 – September 1998

  170. Irishgunner says:

At least Hoddle is trying to do some good now with his football school

  171. Rasputin says:

Beat you to it Irish 😕

I remember they brought in Gross because Wenger was already working miracles for us an they thought that all foreign managers would be the same hahahahah….

  172. Rasputin says:

True and Pleat is a convicted kerb crawler……

  173. Irishgunner says:

I added a bit to the list you put up Rasputin 😉

  174. Rasputin says:

So you did 🙂 – now I look stupid 😳

  175. Irishgunner says:

    Its my future prediction 😆

  176. Rasputin says:

‘Arry back to Portsmouth???? – surely they wouldn’t have him. Even better, ‘Arry back to Pompey and takes Keane and Defoe with him……

  177. Irishgunner says:

‘Arry to Hull to save them from relegation next season?

  178. Rasputin says:

    I’m off again for a while roadsters … there’s not much happening …. hope I return to a ‘love-in’ later…. 🙂

  179. JonJon says:

    hi guys im back sorry..

had to travel home from work

  180. Irishgunner says:

I have to go for a while – must go and vote, I’ll be back later 🙂

  181. London says:

  182. Irishgunner says:

    Anyone here?

  183. London says:

Yes, hello Irish, I hope you had a good Friday night, drinks in a bar with friends, onto a club, danced till 4am, then home with someone special. Well, that would have been my idea of a good Friday night, I blogged then watched Jonathan Ross. Lol

Where do you stand on the issue of loyalty in football? Do you think that it is an out dated concept, an honourable trait sadly fading from the beautiful game or perhaps a different take on it?

  184. Rasputin says:

    Morning Roadsters and Roosters,

It’s bitterly cold and wet here and I’ve got to go to the other side of Essex to play cricket 😦

No new transfer rumours of any merit except those blaggards at the Mail trying to upset us again with this….

“Arsene Wenger snubbed Real Madrid’s offer to make him their boss despite meeting the Spanish giants THREE times.”

  185. JonJon says:

Rasp…i think wenger did meet with Real….but his intention wasnt to join them..his intention was to scare the board into pulling their finger out this summer and help him more than what they did last year…. can copy and paste that comment to irish onto the NEW POST…hahaha see what I did there?????
