The summer rebuild…A fans perspective..Goalkeeper.

After watching the Premier League and Champions League evolve over the past few years its fair to say the role of the goalkeeper has also evolved…

Gone are the days where you judged a good goalkeeper on how mental he was or if he had grave digger hands…due to the speed of todays game and certain rule changes regarding the pass back, which was introduced a few years ago its fair to say that to-days goalie has to be good with the ball at his feet too…

The way we play requires and insists not only on a commanding, agile figure as our number 1, but also on quick , pin point distribution….so we need a cross between Dave Seaman and Cesc Fabregas between our sticks…and I don’t think a player like that is too easy to find….

What we do currently have is two very good goalies in the shape of Almunia and Fabianski…

Almunia has shown alot of loyalty to our club…he came to us when Lehmann was our number one…and Lehmann was our invincible keeper so it wasn’t likely that Almunia was going to dislodge him too quickly..but he bid-ed his time, worked hard in training and has achieved his target…so fair play..

Almunia isn’t too commanding…I’d say his one weakness is his reluctance to come for the high ball..leaving the defence to deal with it…this obviously has lead to certain problems as our defenders aren’t the greatest at heading…also his positioning at certain times is questionable…so its fair to say he isn’t the perfect all round keeper…he’s not what you call a ‘presense’… which alot of successful teams have…

On the other hand Almunia is a great shot stopper with quick reflexes and he is very agile…his distribution is also very good..he doesn’t just hoof it down the pitch..he picks out a free player and finds him….

There’s a certain argument that some Gooners use that Almunia isn’t a good keeper because he’s never played for Spain…hes the wrong side of thirty and he hasn’t gained a single cap…if he was that good he would of been recognised by now..but Spain’s list of quality Goalkeepers is endless and has been for a few years now…they have Casillas, Valdes, Reina all above him in the pecking order so hes not likely to get a look in…

Fabianski is classed as our number 2 keeper at the moment…at 24 he’s still very young for a keeper and has earned rave reviews from several quarters…

Unlike Almunia, Fabianski is a commanding figure in the box..he comes for everything…which is what a good keeper does…it eases the defences nerves and gives them more confidence if they know they’ve got someone behind them who will deal with the high ball…Fabianskis problem is that he isn’t mature enough yet to judge what balls he will win or lose when he does come…like what happened in the ill fated game against Chelsea when his mistake let Drogba in for an open goal…this decision making will come with experience though I feel so I don’t believe it will still be a problem as he gets older…

He is also, like Almunia a good shot stopper, and his distribution is also quite good…he looks for the early ball abit too much though…once again down to decision making…again I don’t see it as a permanent problem as he gets older…

Between the two of them I feel we have two keepers who are more than average…they both have their disadvantages but they both suit the way we play and they both have safe hands….I don’t feel uncomfortable with either of these two between the sticks, although I’d like to see Fabianski cement a first team place…

World-class keepers do not grow on trees…and if one becomes available it wont be cheap…so I think we should stick with what we’ve got for next season…

Alot of fans believe we missed the boat with Given, including me at the time…but Given was a good keeper in a shit team…still is….any keeper that gets 15 shots a game at him season after season is going to look good…I don’t think Given, although a good keeper, is any better than what we’ve got in Almunia..and what we could have in Fabianski…

What do you guys think???

    Morning Roadsters

Great post JonJon – I’m really pleased your post is about ‘keepers as yesterday I was trying to compose one myself about ‘keepers after a debate with our russian blogger……this is going to be interesting…. 🙂

  2. JonJon says:

    thanks peaches…

its all part of a ten part drama series… 😆

theres not much about and the media are talking waffle so i thought id get everyones overall opinions on the team and how we can improve…

  3. Rasputin says:

Good post JonJon…. you must be psychic 🙂

My main problem with Al is that he does not call decisively to his defenders sometimes when he is/is not coming for the ball, and that has caused uncertainty – particularly with Gallas and Clichy on a couple of occassions

  4. JonJon says:

thats why i like fabianski, rasp…

you know he’s coming…it makes the defenders job easier as it leaves the defender with one decision…to block the oncoming attacker…

you dont have to worry about winning it…you know your keepers already flying through the air…

that tactic just doesnt work 30 yards out 🙂

  5. Rasputin says:

Or alternatively, he could take the Gomez approach and just smash into his own defenders and injure them 😆

  6. kelsey says:

Just a quick post before i part with a couple of teeth and a few more thousand euros.

keepers have never been Wenger’s strog point, having Seaman in his prime, and a good young understudy in Manninger who I believe was in goal for the last 10 or so games when we won the double in 98,not sure about that. But wenger re instated an ageing Seaman and manninger never got the chance to see if he could really make it.

Another factor is that boots or slippers and the lighter ball, makes it extremely difficult for keepers to judge exactly the direction the ball is going, and a split second decision has to be made.Lehmann pointed that out with Ronaldo’s free kick against us in the CL.

No keeper has been outstanding this season, but invariably they reserve their best performance when they come to the Emirates.

Keepers will always be highlighted by their mistakes rather than their saves, but my gut feeling is that almunia is a permanent fixture..laters.

  7. Rasputin says:

Not ignoring your keeper post JonJon, but maybe the we are going to move in the transfer market earlier than expected?

“AC MILAN will make a bid of £15million for Emmanuel Adebayor this week.

The Serie A club are desperate to give their fans some positive news after Carlo Ancelotti’s departure for Chelsea and Kaka’s impending exit from the San Siro.

Milan offered £25m for the Arsenal striker last summer but the bid was turned down.

Their valuation has decreased after a mediocre season from the Togo international”

  8. London says:

I know the conversation has moved on but I just want to answer Big Raddy’s post from last night as he obviously put time and effort into it.

    Loyalty, Loyalty, Loyalty

There is always a danger of trying to carry a discussion into a following day that started the night before. More often than not the reasons as to how and why the discussion came about in the first place get forgotten. So with this in mind I would like to clarify my thoughts.

In general I think we as football supporters use double standards when it comes to applying our definition of loyalty to footballers. We seem to expect footballers to negotiate their wage deals totally different from those of anyone else we know.

Using Peaches as an example (sorry Peaches) she is uncomfortable with Adebayor wanting to maximise his income and yet would expect her daughter’s manager to do just that.

If there is one point that I disagree mostly Big Raddy it is this:

“You cite the argument of wages using a comparison between Rico and the train station Indian (Mumbai). My point is that the wages are at a point where any increment will no effect whatsoever upon the recipient, which is certainly not the case in Mumbai or near Reading.”

The Indian who lives on the station makes my point perfectly. I very much doubt that he would believe that and increase on 50k a year would make any difference to someone’s standard of living but as we know – it does. The danger here is to assume that just because we don’t believe that an increase will make a difference doesn’t mean that someone else won’t.

Onto Steven Gerrard and co, where we probably differ here is that I don’t believe that he would have got more money had he gone to Chelsea; if you cast your mind back to the final part of the negotiation Gerrard insisted the Liverpool pay him the same wage that Chelsea were offering – which they did. That to me has nothing to do with loyalty…..but everything to do with taking the most suitable deal on offer.

As to our age, I think it is relevant, I think the concept of player loyalty is a generational thing. I could write until next Tuesday about this but I am going to stop.

I hope your exam went well.

  9. JonJon says:

    good post kelsey

rasp…if ac sell pato or kaka then they better stump up more than that…

but i feel 15mil was going to be the best offer this summer unless chelsea or citeh bid…

  10. JonJon says:

    forgot to add..

good post kelsey, but that 1.5mil wenger forked out for mad jens was probably the best 1.5mil he ever spent

  11. JonJon says:

    londons on fire…

im still sitting on the fence though..loyalty in football is a rare thing…but overall i think its down to the type of player..

in certain transfer sagas theres alot of variables to take into account…weather/city/trophies/hometown club…the money is important but the variables come into play…their could be a 10k differnce in wage but the variables make up for it…some players know where their bread is buttered (kaka)..some are just mercenaries..robinho/barry/cole..

  12. Rasputin says:

I would value Ade in the £15m – £20m bracket JonJon, any more than that and I’d snatch someone’s hand off. The best scenario is to have several clubs bidding for him so we can just sit back and watch them push the price up. Its still more than possible that he’ll stay, there are quite a few good quality strikers likely to make a move this summer…..

  13. London says:

    Good post Jonjon

I played football for my school and my county but I never played in goal. If I am honest I don’t think I know a thing about keepers that is why if ever I write a match report the keeper bit gets brushed past pretty quickly. I’m left footed midfield, I kick every ball at the same time that Wilshire does. Lol

  14. Rasputin says:

I still think that loyalty is a quality that comes from inside the individual. It is a measure of that individual as to how much other factors such as money, environment, team-mates, kudos, ambition etc etc effect their choices.

All top flight players earn enough money to be comfortable for the rest of their lives during their 10-15 year career. It is admirable to want to play at the highest level and therefore for the best clubs.

  15. London says:

One man’s mercenary is another man’s hero.

There is no better example of this than SOL CAMPBELL.

  16. Rasputin says:

I don’t understand….Sol Campbell came to us to win trophies, which he did very successfully – he wasn’t being mercenary, even the totnum supporters would give you that.

They did/do consider him to be disloyal, but he didn’t leave for money.

  17. London says:

    Disloyal, Judas, Mercenary….take your pick.

  18. JonJon says:

yeah campbell comes into the category of ‘variables’

he came for trophies and CL footy…spurs couldnt match that

cole on the other hand was already in a team winning things, playing CL, with the team he loved.. he was already established as the countries left back..

he had nothing left to gain but an extra 40k a week or something…

mercenany…if i was cole i wouldnt of joined chelsea…50k a week would of been enough for me to pull on the red and white every week…

but like rasp says it depends on the individual

  19. London says:

I agree that when it comes to loyalty there are a lot of important variables, but there is one thing that I am not sure I have clear?

Robinho, a player who was no longer wanted at Real Madrid, needed a new place of employ and because he chose Man City he is a mercenary but he wouldn’t have been had he opted for the other interested party….Chelsea. Hhhhmmmm

  20. JonJon says:

sorry.. we mentioned cashley again… 🙂

i think robinho would of gone to chelsea, london…if they wouldnt have pissed madrid off by premeturely printing shirts….

he needed another way out… 150k a week was enough to take him to the bright lights of dumpchester

  21. JonJon says:

    😆 😆 😆

  22. London says:

That was really funny. Who makes these clips?

  23. JonJon says:

people like raif make them london..

riaf didnt make these but hes into stuff like this

  24. JonJon says:

    villa want hleb for 12mil???

    should we do it??

  25. rico01 says:

Morning all, nice one JJ, and spooky, Sky are doing their keeper of the season – and no Almunia, but Calamity james is in there – when are people going realise he is over the hill….

I dont think we have seen the best of Almunia yet..

What a joke that would be JJ, if he goes to Villa, cant see it personally, Birmingham is worse than London 😉 I think he will go to Germany – I sure hope Arsene doesn’t even give any thought to him after the way he behaved..

  26. rico01 says:

Perez has confirmed that Real Madrid are trying to sign Ronaldo – Reckon he will go ??

    I do 😛

  27. Rasputin says:

    Hi rico,

Maybe Ronaldo made a ‘just one more season’ deal wtih manu like Barry did at Villa? Do you know how much Real are going to offer? – my guess would be that it would have to be £50m’ish

  28. rico01 says:

I am not sure how much Rasp, but I dont think you will be far out at 50M – rumours were 46M

Also, Chelsea have come in with a ‘world record’ bid for Kaka, but Milan have said he goes to madrid or nowhere – Brazil though have refused Kaka permission to leave the national team to go to Madrid to finalise his move –

Kind of reminds me of when we bought Thomas – the Czech squad told the world that Thomas had left them, flown to London to sign for Arsenal – happy days eh 😉

  29. peachesgooner says:

Looks like we may have 2 Thomas’ soon rico! – ‘Thomas Elastic Vermaelen’, stretches from 5′ 10″ to 6’2″ 😛

Chelsea are in danger of making themselves look as stupid as citeh did when they made that huge bid for Kaka

  30. Rasputin says:

That last comment was from me rico … I’m logged in as peaches for some reason – I’m a cyber drag artist 😳

  31. JonJon says:

rumour has it that madrid has 150mil to spend…thats enough for ronaldo kaka and the reports on sky this morning were alonso too for 20mil…

    three big signings…all within reach

  32. rico01 says:

Get you clever clogs Rasp 😛

Two Thomas’ – how lovely that will be… 😆

Alonso is coming to us JJ, not Madrid 😉

  33. Rasputin says:

I’m very surprised at so much early transfer activity …. do you think Real are trying to get in before the billionnaires get involved? There is so much politics surrounding the Spanish and Italian big boys that I never know how much is bravado?

  34. rico01 says:

Take your pick then chaps and chapesses 😛

  35. Rasputin says:

    None thanks rico ……..

  36. Rasputin says:

Maybe sneijder – we don’t need De la Red

  37. rico01 says:

Incredible though isn’t it, nine players out in one go !

Eboue is now saying he may leave us this summer, dont tell me City want him too, or maybe the spuds 😉

  38. JonJon says:

    who makes this stuff up???

  39. rico01 says:

Sky news – Oooobefoobee Martins agent says we have made an enquiry for him, hope this is poop

  40. Rasputin says:

I’d take Chiellini, no way do we need Martins – Dudu’s better than him……

  41. rico01 says:

JJ – it has to be a spud!

  42. rico01 says:

Rasp – naughty Symonds has been sent home from the 20/20 – thats his Aussie career over now….

  43. Rasputin says:

We need Irish on here – she’s got a finely tuned ‘bullshit filter’ 🙂

  44. rico01 says:

Where is she Rasp? Like you, yes to Chiellini, him and that Thomas fella with the long surname, thats the defence sorted…

  45. rico01 says:

Lyon want both Paddy and Hleb – what a joke, I cant cope with all this, I have a date with a Dyson, having the kitchen spruced up and there is dust everywhere and in all the cupboards, so best i get busy….

Catch you all a little later, unless we sign a player then everything else can wait 😛

  46. Irishgunner says:

  47. Rasputin says:

That’s good news rico, he definitely won’t be in the Ashes squad now 😉 …. although I think he has a serious alcohol problem so its a shame as he was an immense cricketer – we could have done with some of his ‘steel’ over recent years.

  48. peachesgooner says:

rico – I’ve sent an SOS

  49. Rasputin says:

Hi Irish …… have we been playing hide and seek with you? 😛

  50. JonJon says:

    long are ya?

  51. Irishgunner says:

    😆 Rasputin.

My “bullshit filter” 😉 is hoping the Martins’ story is a load of rubbish.

  52. Irishgunner says:

Hiya JonJon I’m good thanks, enjoying the lovely weather 8)

  53. JonJon says:

its not so lovely today in my neck of the woods but its supposed to be back tomorrow.. 🙂

so whats the buffon rating on the bullshitometer???

  54. Irishgunner says:

    Out of a 10, I’d say 9.

City offered about £40mil in Jan and he turned it down, that and he seems very loyal to Juve having stayed with them in Serie B.

However, the fans blamed him for some bad defeats a few months back after he came back from injury so he may be thinking about leaving but Wenger splashing out £20mil on a keeper??? Hardly!

  55. JonJon says:

    exactley irish

as i said in the post worldclass goalies arent cheap and theres no way mr wenger will break the clubs record on a keeper…no way..

  56. Irishgunner says:

That and Juventus may have strange people over their transfers but Chiellini and Buffon are integral to the side and with Nedved retired, a new manager coming in, Del Piero getting older I really doubt they’d let their two lynchpins go.

  57. Rasputin says:

What about ‘Thomas Elastic Vermaelen’ Irish … that has all the hallmarks of an AW buy don’t you think? …. although £10m would seem to be way over the top unless he’s more ‘special’ than it appears…..

  58. Irishgunner says:

He seems like a Wenger buy to be honest – defender who can score goals.

He did spend £6mil on Sagna and our CB has been a problem area this season so I reckon he will spend to right that place. With Senderos more than likely about to me sold (reckon we could get about £6-7mil for him) Vermaelen wouldn’t cost much in the grand scheme of things.

  59. JonJon says:

isnt the news channel that broke the TV story the same ones that said M diarra had signed for us when he was 2 weeks into a 6 month layoff??

  60. kelsey says:

help, i need sympathy, loving and general looking after.

the 2 implants and roots out took under 12 minutes. the do’s and don’t took 40 minutes. 8 days of anti biotics, pain killers when required, no solid food only cold drinks for 48 hours, no excitement,no bowls also for 48 hours, all for the price of a good two week holiday in mauritus.

  61. Rasputin says:

How are you going to survive without any excitement for 48 hours kelsey? 🙄

  62. JonJon says:

ive got some excitement for you kelsey…

we are signing buffon chiellini alonso and sneijder…

  63. peachesgooner says:

Oh kelsey, poor you, no excitement, no bowls, no food – at least you’ve got us to keep you cheerful 🙂

  64. JonJon says:

    here you go kelsey…

  65. Irishgunner says:

I fear for the youth of Ireland 😦

  66. Rasputin says:

JonJon….I reckon all those headers and that kick on the nappa must have damaged a few brain cells – but someone tackles shown there that had you up out of your seat 😉

  67. Rasputin says:

I’m off for a bit … catch up later folks……

  68. peachesgooner says:

    Hello – anyone about 🙂

  69. peachesgooner says:

Hello you – where’ve you been hiding 😉

  70. avenell says:

I’ve been in with the stinging nettles and behind the mole hills.. 😦

This gardening that you love so much??

  71. peachesgooner says:

I wouldn’t recommend that kind of gardening for a summers day – you want to be doing that when you’re all covered up 😆

Its fun though don’t you think 😛

  72. avenell says:

It’s gone quite chilly down here tonight, that’s why I tackled it..Fun .. unsure.. 😦

Where is the rest of the gang? Where’s Irish gone? 😦

  73. peachesgooner says:

Did you make an effort to speak to her earlier…….

  74. avenell says:

    No.. 😦 I had to go out…

  75. London says:

I was trying to think of the five biggest lies doing the rounds in football today, a bit like:

My future is here with Arsenal (Adebayor)

We are going to build a new stadium (Tottenham board)

Can you think of any others?

  76. Rasputin says:

    Tsssk tsssk

  77. peachesgooner says:

I’m sure she’ll try again tmoro sweetie 🙂

Rasp went to cricket practice – rico went to do some house-work – raddy must be chilling after his exam – and poor kelsey was a bit shell-shocked after his dental ordeal today 🙂

    Hows everyone in your house…….

  78. London says:

I promise not to argue (London)

  79. London says:

    Night, night.

  80. Rasputin says:

Bad timing – my tsssk tsssk was aimed at ave – apologies folks

  81. avenell says:

London…. Barry .. I joined Man City coz they are going places..

Peaches, I have been told to bore you with Mill’s last nights events, she came 3rd in the school fun run for under 8’s, she is only just 6..
A proud mum has been telling me I have to tell you.. 😉

  82. avenell says:

    London .. you win!!

  83. peachesgooner says:

rasp – it was a good thing you were on when Irish appeared, at least she had someone to talk to…..and JonJon too 😆

Well done to Millie – thats not boring at all 🙂

  84. rico01 says:

    Morning all

Well done Millie – 2012 for you 😉

  85. JonJon says:

    guten morgen mein amigos….
