Vulnerable, Scared, But a Bit Dirty!

When all the rumours were in the papers the other day about Arsene and Real Madrid, I first thought “Oh my god what are we going to do without Mr Wenger OBE” even though I was 99% sure it was all taken out of context.

Then like when you are allowed out one night to the  “discotheque Au Go Go”  and that blond girl in the size 10  mini skirt walks past and turns your head and your mind wanders ” I wonder what that would be like?” You know it is no better than what you have, but it is different,  a change.

So I had a few naughty thoughts .. If Arsene left us..  😉

So who would you choose if you have too?  A  manager from this country .. David Moyes.. nah wouldn’t bring the big names in.. too direct.. So we look abroad Mourinho.. nah . knob .. Bergkamp .. no use on long away trips to Europe. van Basten mmm Hiddink nah tainted now.. So I thought about the squad and our limited budget at the moment . So  we can’t have a cheque book manager .. so who?  That geezer from Croatia , Bilic,  Slaven Bilic he could be the man  good football, technical players playing  “Bilicball”.

The transfer window would be a frenzy,  players who thought they signed for Arsene FC would be heading south, a few unknown Eastern block players coming in, the newspapers would be dedicated to us, whatever way you look at it more excitement than the mundane fourth place finishes and cup  semi finalists that we should be grateful for at the moment.

I know Arsene is a genius, or so I am told, but I don’t know why..Or can any manager take over this squad of players??  It isn’t his formations or his substitutions during games, they baffle me.. When he joined Arsenal he had 90% of the 98′ double team in place, he was also streets ahead with his knowledge of French football so bringing in a few choice French players wasn’t rocket science exactly..Is his longevity based on those  one or two major acheivements

He then made a extortionate profit on a few players and bought one  of his old players back from Monaco that he had kept a eye on..  Sounds easy, but it worked, in the end another double and a season unbeaten, albeit with some luck.. But good money was spent on the likes of Wiltord .. Not exactly a unknown as he scored in a world cup final.

Now we have gone into a youth project a little too far, it is a good idea no doubt , but we need someone to be a bit more cut throat and not Mr Nice Guy  and wield an axe a bit sooner, there is not enough time for more than 2 or 3 trainees in a team at any one time in the best league in the world I’m afraid..

When Arsene had to answer questions the other day, it was from his employers, his bosses he should be accountable to those people but he seems to have thrown his toys out a bit..

So then he coughs and the whole of the Arsenal fan base craps themselves like he has got  ‘Bird Flu’  I blame the board they have created what has become a monster, they have built him up to be more than a manager, they have put too much trust in him and he has become more powerful than the rest of the club.

We should be forcing him to be training up a successor, so if he does go he can either take over or guide our next manager along in the ‘Arsenal Way’ Liverpool done this from Shankly to Dalglish and look at the success they had over two decades.  Perhaps he has done this  to a degree with Stevie Bould.. I dearly hope so..

We are so vunerable and reliant on one man, perhaps we should never have got ourselves in this position so we need a get out clause just in case Arsene should ever leave , this should be a lesson learned, before 2011 please..

Back to reality , I just want the old Arsene back and a bit of the old speculate to accumulate PLEASE!!!!  (and a safety net)

    Well put points Ave..

Its all true, we all shout, whats going on, but we know. The loud shouts of “Wenger Out” are followed by the quiet ones of “but not yet” (apart from JJ).

At least its put us in a position to actually think about him leaving, which will happen some time.

SAF will have to leave OT at some time. But I bet its not as traumatic as AW leaving us (to the fans)….

Who knows what goes on in that French head.

  2. JonJon says:

    morning all…

nice post mate…ive been thinking the same for a while now….

i appreciate all hes done for us and i’ll regard him as a legend but at the end of the day we are arsenal and nobody is bigger than the club….

arsenal have always been a big club…always….and like the post says wengers initial success was down to the fact he inherited a fantastic team that had gone stale under old management…its remerkable what new life a new manager can bring into a team isnt it???

dont get me wrong chaf id love wenger to stay and go for it as long as he turned back into the old wenger…but at the minute things have turned stale…

his tactics his decision making his lineups have all gone to pot not just this season but last season too…

i know hes thinking about the club in the long run…the 6-5 rule, the credit crunch etc etc…but this may never happen… its like we are waiting for too many variables to be great again in the future but the only way to ensure future greatness is to be great now….

  3. JonJon says:

also chaf i agree with that comment on SAF

manutd will always attract the best players because of their trophy history… even if SAF left after this season the worlds best players would still want to join them simply because they are winning.. fergie or not…

the only thing that attracts big players to arsenal at the minute is wenger…thats got to change or wengers vision wont be as water tight as he first thought

  4. rico01 says:

Morning all, good read ave, especially with the new found typing 😉

In all this, I still cant blame Arsene except for his team selection and substitutes – the rest at board level has to be blamed on the board themselves – if they knew they were going to hoof out DD, why did they not have a replacement ?? Instead they chose to ‘leave something else’ to the boss – that for me is when it all started to go wrong, how can any manager be expected to do both the jobs – you wouldnt be able to do it anywhere else other than PHW and his then bunch of Ebenezer’s..

I really now hope Stan buys the club outright and off we go, because as sad as it makes me feel, we will not get anywhere unless he does..

  5. London says:

    Morning folks

The title is genius Ave; a very thought provoking piece. The wish for the old Wenger back really hits home. I think it was Rico who originally wrote that; I could be wrong; but either way, I am sure the wish is as heart felt by all of us.

  6. London says:

    Chaf

I have a spare, free ticket for Sunday if you want it.

  7. JonJon says:

how does everyone feel about the hangeland rumour…i aint too sure about him…hes big but is he fast enough???

  8. rico01 says:

Morning London – wished I lived near you, I would pay for that spare ticket, last home game of the season, should be a wonderful atmosphere…

Thinking about it, you may not want to sit by me for that lenght of time 😉

  9. rico01 says:

Morning JJ – I was listening to the Sky Panel last weekend and they were talking about Hangeland – the general opinion of them all was that at Fulham he looks good and has done well, but in a top side his weaknesses would be exposed and he would ‘be found out’ –

Its his height and heading ability that makes him look good, and because he scored against us this season, but sometimes his positioning and pace make him look little better the our own Big Phil –

I personnaly hope we get someone better, and who will probably be cheaper, as 15M is a bit expensive imho 🙂

  10. avenell says:

    Morning Roadsters..

I just want an exciting summer, the season never had as many highs as we normally get… So lets hope the transfer window makes up fo that.

I hope yeterday went okay rico.. 😦

  11. rico01 says:

Morning ave, it did thanks, very sad, but her family did her very very proud..

I honestly think it will be ave, it has to be – we have been so close for four seasons, its only at the final hurdle we are exposed. If we dont get it right in the transfer market this summer then it will be the beginning of big changes at the club, i am sure..

  12. JonJon says:

i dont rate him rico…i just dont think hes got enough…

i hope its an exciting summer too…this squad needs a boost…. Ala arshavin….quality players have positive impacts

2-3 of these signings and the team will be ready next season…

  13. rico01 says:

JJ – If its him or Silvestre then then I would have him, but like you I think there is someone better out there

  14. JonJon says:

    lescott…

PL experience strong quick wins alot of headers scores goals and can play left back…

if we are going to part with 15mil it might as well be on somebody good

  15. rico01 says:

If he was that good JJ, more ‘top’ clubs would be looking at him, he will probably go to Spurs 😉

Lescott – now your talking, but I reckon it could very well be Richards, as City will no doubt pay mega bucks for a CH

  16. chaf says:

    Good later morning again..

London – I answered last night! I am in Brighton this weekend, and Benwell’s off to Cornwall as well, I think Stork has that ticket, Charlie’s coming with me as well, so he can’t go.

It’ll be 2-2, if we score two! All long throws and bully boys and an even younger Arsenal team. In fact when the team arrive, its not in Arsenal uniforms, it’s school uniforms. But I’m sure their mental strength and spirit will get them through…

  17. rico01 says:

Hi chaf – you are in for a good weekend then, its meant to be really warm – dont spend too much money in The Lanes, I can spend hours in there with all the NikNak shops….

  18. avenell says:

Tell Benwell to stay away from Cornwall…. it’s run to the sun (RTTS)weekend.. You cannot move for Splitty’s and bugs..

  19. JonJon says:

i like richards rico…hes strong quick and good in the air but his positionings abit suspect…he’ll be good in about 5 years in the right team with the right partner but he has alot to learn…

id take him though for around 6mil but we’d need someone else

he’d of been perfect playing alongside sol for a few years….he could be the next sol…

not that i want sol back…just an example 😉

  20. avenell says:

Do you mean pikey shops rico?
NikNaks is what my mate calls our travelling friends..

  21. rico01 says:

ave – that is a tad naughty my friend, i travel 😉 😉

  22. JonJon says:

    😉

  23. avenell says:

    That’s Rico… lalala.. laladee.. lalala..laladee..

  24. JonJon says:

    LMAO

  25. chaf says:

    Hi Rico

Yeah. I love the Lanes, just ‘Bo-ho hippy’ enough not to annoy me. If I am right, the first Body Shop was there and I had my ear pierced by Max Bygraves daughter in 1977…

  26. JonJon says:

whoop whoop come on the revolution begins…. 😉

  27. rico01 says:

chaf – thats a bit before my time 😉

Ave and JJ – stop ganging up on me 😛

    What a fab record 🙂

  28. rico01 says:

Chaf – Did she tell you a story ?? 😛

  29. JonJon says:

see its all about power of the mind rico…

i want alonso next and david villa 😉

  30. rico01 says:

Ha Ha JJ, you keep it up, but swap Alonso for Yaya please 😉 😛

  31. chaf says:

Rico – Not any interesting stories, just like her old man…

  32. JonJon says:

or both alonso and yaya.. 😉

  33. rico01 says:

    Easy tiger – both 😛

char – i was playing on the ‘ i wanna tell you a story’ line old Max used 😉

  34. avenell says:

he was good on family fortunes ..lol

  35. rico01 says:

oops – char is meant to say chaf 😳

  36. rico01 says:

not according to the survey Ave 😉

  37. chaf says:

Rico – I did get it! I tried to reference him there but it wasn’t funny!

  38. chaf says:

    I mean I wasn’t funny!!

  39. avenell says:

I thought it was a shop that sold raincoats next to a churchyard.. 🙂

  40. avenell says:

    Macs.. Bygraves.. 😉

  41. avenell says:

Where does the Queen keep her chickens??

  42. avenell says:

    Royal Enfield!! Stop me!!! 🙂

  43. rico01 says:

    Oh No 😛

chaf – that was funny 😉

  44. rico01 says:

Fabianski is fit for Sunday 😛

  45. avenell says:

    That’s handy.. I don’t like Alistar McGowan..

  46. avenell says:

    I mean Mannone .. 😉

  47. rico01 says:

Haha – off for a while, catch you later 😦

  48. rico01 says:

Haha – off for a while, catch you later 😦

  49. London says:

    A Very Avenell Road Affair.

Lescott would be a good signing; I would certainly be happy regardless of the circumstances but before we get carried away let’s just assess the chances of this happening.

If Gallas stays at the club next season, he would inevitably be first choice to play along side Toure and if those two do not get injured until let’s say Christmas, which is feasible, then the only chance that Lescott would have of playing first team football would be in the CC cup.

I wonder, if I was Lescott would I really want to leave a club where I get regular first team football and am really appreciated to sit on the bench for the best part of the season being paid the same amount of money?

This is the main reason that I defended the decision to bring Silvestre in, it is obviously difficult to find experienced players that are prepared to sit on the bench for long periods of time. Most footballers understandably want to play football.

If either Gallas or Toure leave then that is a game changer and I will be all for bringing in a big, well experienced CB. The yard stick for which should be measured by asking one simple question: Has the player got what it takes to win the CL? In Lescott’s case the words that spring to mind are, why not?

In every case there is always doubt but some examples are clearer than others; if you ask the same question of Silvestre then the answer that is screamed back is a resounding NO. Wenger found himself in a difficult situation last summer with Senderos asking to leave and having little time to do a lot about it. Wenger now has time to improve on him but I am not holding my breath that Lescott will want to join us.

  50. JonJon says:

i dont think gallas and toure will be 1st choice next season london…i think wengers seen enough this year to prove we need a ball winning CH who will be in the 1st team for one of them to partner….

weve been caught out too many times this year by long balls cross balls etc and whoever wenger gets will be 1st choice CH….

id prefer lescott and gallas with kolo as backup….

kolo may not want to sit on the bench but its up to him to get back in the side and thats the main problem weve had in recent seasons…no competition for key places…. it amazes me how certain players spend months out through injury and then get straight back into the team even though they arent fit simply because we ‘need’ them….

that has to change next season…nobodies place should be guaranteed…keep them on their toes…

  51. London says:

The only reason players like Toure stay is because their places are all but guaranteed. Gallas may accept playing second fiddle and spending long periods on the bench next season if he were given a contract extension but Toure would simply leave.
The idea of keeping players on their toes makes complete sense but seems to me more difficult to achieve than initially meets the eye.
If Wenger choses to replace either one of them with someone better ala Sagna for Eboue I will not complain.

  52. JonJon says:

    anyone watching the kids???

    good game…

  53. JonJon says:

and then we’ll see either kolo or gallas play rm to kee them happy… lol

  54. rico01 says:

Hi Guys – what a game with the kids, we should be 4,5,6 up, and a jammy dipper goal, well, the build up, but a super take by the geezer in grey 😉

Same old keeper illness though, a ‘mad’ dash to the half way line – 😦

  55. JonJon says:

i seen that rico…a touch of the fabianskis i feel….is gerry peyton the GK coach…maybe we should change it..?? 😦

  56. rico01 says:

Sunu – there was a rumour he was returning to France back in Jan, I really hope this is not the case..

Sunu v’s Ade – Sunu any day of the week, and JET is definately going to make it at our mighty club, great player…. – and someone somewhere else told me i knew nothing about footie and JET was pants…. 😉

  57. rico01 says:

JJ – our keepers have done it since Bob wilson left, I say get Spunky back 😉

  58. rico01 says:

I love Bouldy, I really hope he is being groomed to replace Arsene, this side play Arseball better than the 1st team 😉

  59. rico01 says:

JJ – I used to think Lansbury was going to be another Bentley and latterly randall – but over the last season he has really grown up and another player I now think has a really good chance of an Arsenal career

  60. rico01 says:

JJ – did you see Rue Fonte is leaving, AFC dont want to keep him – a strange deal was in place but we said no thanks

  61. rico01 says:

    what a finish 🙂

  62. JonJon says:

that was a great goal rico…. jackys playing well…

i seen the deal with fonte rico…we had to pay 2.5mil to keep him or something like that…he was only on loan…

    no point really…

  63. JonJon says:

we are all over them….come on kids….give us summat to smile about this season….its games like these when you just know jackys going to make it….

  64. JonJon says:

hahaha.. looks like liverpool has the same problem with young keepers….

  65. rico01 says:

bummer, got to dash – catch you in the morning – sleep safe all

    Nite JJ x

  66. JonJon says:

    nite rico

  67. London says:

Damn it, I missed the game. Ive got it set to record at 1.30

    Jonjon

I’ve got to ask, what made you put the Cher clip up there, Gypsy’s tramps and thieves. I have just finished playing it for the tenth time today.

  68. JonJon says:

    hahahahaha london… read aves 11.22

its a good tune though mate…some bird in the boozer sang it on kareoke last nigt and it was still in my head….

i won the prize though with my lional richie impression…easy… 😉

i know lionel richies brother you know…ive met him a coule of times….

    they call him Meballsa…

  69. chaf says:

    Evening all.

What a game. Steve Bould at the near post. I’ve always said he was my best CH along with Adams. The kids were great, I really enjoyed it. And now they’re off to Anfield in the famous shirts of twenty years ago…
Jason McAteer what a bad loser. “No they weren’t brilliant ( as suggested by the commentator) they were quite good”. you wanker. Jack was great, Sanchez Watt was special.

But did you notice hardly any tackles, it is getting like basketball…

    Chaf has left the building….

  70. JonJon says:

i was proud of them tonight chaf…they showed the 1st team how its done….i hope a few of those boys make it with us…jacky, sanchez, jet….

i must say ive got a bigger connection with some of the boys than what i have with the men….

  71. chaf says:

    Absolutely JJ

I really felt sick when the dippers scored their goal. Unlike I have for the first team. Totally great game.

  72. rico01 says:

    Morning all 😛

  73. JonJon says:

    morning everyone….new post 😉
