I’m one of the first to admit I’ve been critical of our wiley old boss over the last two or three seasons and for many different reasons – lack of depth/strength in our squad, standing by players like Diaby, Denilson and Silvestre, poor team selection and substitutions, the list goes on. Most of this comes from frustration having been beaten by Wigan, Spuds or even Sunderland, all games which I feel we should be winning..
At the end of the season, Wenger said something along these lines in relation to any possible incoming transfer targets.
‘I won’t buy a player on a World Cup performance, I want a player who can perform for the whole season and not just for four weeks’ (It’s not word for word, but it’s near enough)
Well Mr Wenger, I think you are spot on with your views and we fans should be glad he’s not judging any player over the next three weeks… Just look what has happened over the last week and a few of the players many of us were crying out for the boss to sign:-
France – Gourcuff, Toulalan
Holland- van der Vaart
Germany – Mertesacker
Serbia – Subotic
Cameroon – M’bia
Brazil – Melo
Australia – Schwarzer
The above are just a few of the ‘big’ names linked to us over the last few weeks and like me, I bet many fans have been waiting for the World Cup to begin so they can get a good look at players with their own eyes and not just through a few youtube clips..
Not long ago, when the rumours about Cesc Fabregas gathered great pace, Peter Hill-Wood said that any money generated from sales would be all Arsene Wenger’s to spend. In panic, like everyone else, I started thinking about who is there out there who could fill our captains boots? Reality is, there isn’t anyone, but the name Yoann Gourcuff started to do the rounds (I blame JonJon for that
)
After a few youtube clips, I convinced myself he was the man, however…….
Having watched France draw on the opening day and lose to Mexico on Thursday, right now I can honestly say that the only thing Arsenal could do worse than buying a player from the French team right now, is sacking Arsene Wenger and appointing Raymond Domenech – seriously, they have been poor but Avenell raised that subject yesterday so I won’t harp on.
Holland didn’t exactly set the world alight either, but they are the side I can watch with ease, a bit like watching Arsenal. They have talent and experience all over the pitch and during the opening game, van der Vaart looked pretty good, could have easily got himself on the score sheet – I’m going to keep my eye on him as I think he may be one of the few to impress all the way through the tournament, as will Holland (my fav’s to win)
Germany, they had a storming 4-0 start, yes, not against the strongest opposition and after Cahill got sent off the score could have gone into double figures. Blimey i thought, go on Arsene, go get a couple of this big strong talented German guys – next game they get thrashed 1-0 by Serbia and referee called, A Undiano Mallenco. Dreadful game, dreadful refereeing but Germany were poor.
Did Subotic or Mertesacker do enough during yesterdays game to make you wish we would sign them?
Cameroon – Without our man Song, they lost, M’bia needs to be watched again. The same can be said of Melo, Brazil won but they made it look like hard work against North Korea….
So – my point is, we get linked to many players, many are involved in the World Cup, many aren’t. All I know right now is that those involved in South Africa over the last week have really failed to impress so far. Maybe they don’t need to, maybe they just want to start slowly and build up as the tournament progresses. Sadly though, as we will soon see, the latter only gets you an early flight home.
Arsene Wenger is right, not only about a player who ‘can perform for four weeks’, but what about players who ‘can’t perform for four weeks’.
A good, solid, steady player performs all season, not just for a World Cup, but including a World Cup.
A big named player gets you a big named player, but maybe a player who is desperate to break into the side of his country is a player who will fight harder, play better and not take his place for granted, he’ll also cost a lot less money…
Talking of which, it seems Laurent Koscielny will soon be our second signing, he’s obviously done enough to impress Arsenal. If he’s as good a signing Vermaelen has proved to be, I’ll be very happy….
It’s not all about ‘who’ the player is, it’s about ‘what’ the player is about. Maybe I’m just starting to understand the philosophy behind Arsene Wenger and his transfer policy… And there was me thinking he’s just been a tight old bugger
Morning all…
Englands dire performance last night adds weight, ‘big names’ such as Rooney, Gerrard, Lumpard, Terry.. All failed to impress yet again… Seems they can do it for their club but not their country….
Heskey was good though.
Heskey was cack someone…. they all were
I fib, Barry wasn’t as bad….
morning rico..
capellos to blame for that performance..every man and his dog that has watched england play for the last few years knows that lampard and gerrard dont work..lampard doesnt even play well for england and never has done yet he still gets picked..
we lose all our shape..
rooneys scored 30 goals this year playing as lead striker and capellos playing him in the hole but having heskey up front just makes england hoofers so rooney dont see the ball..
capello is doing a wenger..hes putting square pegs in round holes and hes got joe cole sat on the bench twidding his thumbs
but yeah wengers right you dont buy players on wc performance
but wengers problem he doesnt really buy players full stop..
morning jj
shocking wasn’t it, why heskey is there amazes me… most seem to put club before country, they should not be picked..
i know many slate beckham, but he was always proud to wear the three lions…
capellos just picking the wrong players..
heskeys not good enough and although hes big and strong why play him there..rooneys big and strong too but bangs the goals in so why bother playing heseky..rooneys the complete package so let him lead the line..
why gerrard on the left?? play him behind rooney and put cole on the left.. fuck lampard hes shite..
jj,
i think the Koscielny deal is taking longer than he thought, thats the clubs fault for not offering the right amount of money to begin with – cole’s new club could be sorted out sooner than expected when he gets back to the UK early
or why not start with rooney and crouch and stick lumpard on the bench, park bench in hyde park i mean!
On this form at least the Ingerland players would get in the French side.
If Joe Cole considering joining lets hope Capello keeps him on bench !
Morning DG, Cole has to play on wednesday if capello wants us england to stay in SA….
now ive got england off my chest ill start on arsenal..
gallas, silvestre (good), campbell, senderos (gone) all set to leave and wenger want us to get our knickers in a twist over this polish-french bloke that nobodies ever heard of???
dont think so..the whole defence needed rebuilding and letting 4 players go and bringing in one isnt anythying to get giddy about..
jj, i think he will sort it out, but not until he has finished his part time job!!
rico..
i think the polish-french bloke transfer is taking so long to sort because the club have been pissing about trying to sort cesc out..
they can tell us all they want they dont want to sell him but i have no doubts that weve been negotiating with barca trying to get the price up..
i also have a theory on cole…
capellos banned players from contract talks..and coles not played…??? mmmmm
i reckon coles been sorting his arsenal contract out and capellos thrown his dummy out…
We should be looking at getting that Bougherra in of Rangers and Algeria. He’s a perfect example of a player who peforms well consistantly. He done it at the last Emirates Cup as he always does for Rangers and he clearly does it for Algeria.
Sign him up, Wenger.
i like the cole theory jj, just hope he’s joining us…
re the cesc stuff, i know i will get bashed for this but he won’t be with us next season, no way, like you say, we are after the best price so wenger can buy who he needs…
if we let cesc go and don’t buy, wengers days have to numbered…
Griff, i haven’t seen him so can’t comment, but there are a few players from the so called lesser sides who have more fight in them, hence the post. These so called big stars have only money on their mind…
we said we could compete with chelsea for signing players…we just couldnt compete with wages..but chelsea cant buy everybody so why the hell are we trying to save a few pennies on this polish-french bloke..
There are no good footballers in England, contrary to popular belief. Just watch Stoke, Blackburn, Bolton, etc., you know, the “get in amongst them”, “don’t let them play” brigade, celebrated by English media, loved by their fans. Well what you see in the World Cup is just that. You want a good English team? Wait until Gibbs, Emmanuel-Thomas, Bartley, Wilshire, Afobe, Frimpong, etc. are older. They are footallers. The EPL only looks good because of the foreigners. Gerrard. Lampard, Rooney, etc. cannot play outside of the UK, they are not real footballers.
sell fab & replace him with cole????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????..wtf? i want to see arsenal become great again.cole cant get a game for chelsea so we come in for him.is it only me that thinks cole can never replace fab..from the days of viera & petit..gilberto & edu..now we have joe cole.wtf?wenger used to bring in great players now he brings in other teams cast offs.what a joke.-& i aint laughing.it reminds me of sylvesre, what is happening people??????????????
LB
i totally disagree..theres plenty of good footballers in england..
they just dont perform well as a team…as a team they are over rated..but we know that..
doesnt mean the players are rubbish though does it..
and theres nothing wrong with the get amongst them attitude..
footballs a contact sport..closng down, marking and tackling is as much an art as passing, dribbling shooting..
LB, agree we have a few coming through are ranks, but what about now?? We need the right players this summer and I think there are some good English gritty players out there that could give us the guts we need…
Just look at what a bargin Fulham got with Murphy and there has to be a few in the Championship who would give their right arm for a chance in the PL…
dejected, who has suggested Cole is a replacement for Cesc???? No-one here thats for sure….
arsenaldejectedfan
vieira, petit, edu and gilberto were unheard of before wenger signed them..
and henry was a cast off from juventus..bergkamp was a cast off from inter..
coles a fantastic player cast off or not, i want him whether we sell cesc or not…
i want cole in no matter what..and the man who i want to replace cesc is vdv..
sell cesc, get joey on a free and spend 15mil max on vdv..
great business..
enough money left over to buy a whole new defence..and a gk..
Jay Simpson has been told he is free to leave, i had high hopes for him once
VDV for me too jj, kill two birds with one stone, Robin is a happy bunny and we get an outstanding creative player ….
jj, did you see the german game yesterday??
rico..
lol
how many of these lads we have high hopes for are actually going to make it??
i like simpson but he never stood a chance..we all know wenger doesnt give the english lads the same time as the foriegners…
sorry rico, just a rant..but imagine cole wages would be higher than the likes of thierry & the rest of our greats.it makes me sick…..the mediaslags
no rico ive only been watching some of the night time games..
i know the result though.. how did ozil do??
arsenaldejected, no need for sorry, just think cole would be a good addition to the squad, been there, done it, mature, good player and we can pay him well as we he is free, win win situation
they were all pretty poor jj ….
Gotta pop out and do the weekly shopping
see you in a couple of hours….
coles wages wouldnt be higher..
thats a myth…
he would probably be on 80 k a week but the fact hes a free transfer means we can offer him a massive signing on fee that would make his contract over 4 years look like 150k a week but it aint..
just remember sol campbell..
when we signed him he was our highest earner at that time and he was a defender and we had players like bergkamp???..simply because we got him on a free..
cole is better than rosicky, diaby, nasri, theo..
cole is better than anyone we have barring cesc and rvp..
i dont care what we pay him we need to get him..
hey guys,
anybody asked why joe cole not playing for england in the world cup? Is it because he broke the rules set by capello (no transfers before the world cup) and went on to sign for another club?? Therefore is the transfer rumour true?? Has Joe Cole already signed for ‘the arsenal’??
so now we have it, Koscielny, Joe Cole, Chamakh. All we need is another centreback and a decent keeper. Then we sorted!!
Cheers
hi realjay
yeah i thought that earlier about cole
james, thanks, now shut the door as you leave….
Very good stuff. It is all about the efficiency of the player. Inter get last year Etoò for Ibrahimovic and Morhinio said it was a very good deal, we get 50 mil with the player who is not less than Ibrahimovic.
Some people thinks that managing the team is a playstaion game. These are the people who mostly blame Wenger for not signing ten players per season.
Wenger is the more efficient mamaneger in the world.
you talking to yourself again rico??
big names?lampard rooney terry are only big names in the premier league,in other countries they are not rated that highly and rightly so,foreigners make em look good and thats what englands problem is,no stand out world class player, rooney aint world class, and i think he proved me right over the last week slagging english fans who id say paid a fortune to go watch the country in south africa,,,those players should be made to pay for every england fans flights after that crap last night,,i felt sorry for the english fans,,not the players!!!!!!!!
Hi Guys
Interesting posts. My problem with signing (?) Cole, Chamahk, Koscielny is that Le Prof said his priority would be to strengthen the defense.
As JonJon has said, we appear to be losing 4 defensive players, for various reasons; end of contract; crap; or better contract elswhere and replacing them with a giant 6 foot unknown quantity.
I bet Stoke, Wigan etc are quaking in their boots.
I was just going to write something and then I saw that Griff had already said it:-
“We should be looking at getting that Bougherra in of Rangers and Algeria. He’s a perfect example of a player who peforms well consistantly. He done it at the last Emirates Cup as he always does for Rangers and he clearly does it for Algeria.
Sign him up, Wenger.”
Boo, I hate shopping
Rico, what did you buy me? And if you say a Bonio that is good enough for me.
I am sure Bougherra is a splendid chap, but he has had more clubs than Tiger Woods. All at a low level.
Wenger says he likes him but that’s probably because he is cheap and sod the quality.
Hi RA, thats funny
I know nowt about this Rangers chap, but I think you are spot on re the way wenger looks at transfers, TV was a bit of an exception. If we get Koscielny its a start as long as we get another defender like Cahill or Subotic and add to that a keeper CM and Joe Cole, we off to a good start…
is the situation that bad that we are wanting to sign this bogie bloke..
lol red more clubs than tiger..
if we have all this money we are now supposed to have where are all thetop notch quality players we were promised?? unless it had something to do with ticket renewels???
but what would i know ive only witnessed the same thing happen for the last 5 years on the trot..
remember in 2008??
we lost an entire midfield and replaced them with……a 17year old from coca cola league..
that worked out well didnt it..
2010..look set to lose an entire defence and replace them with…..chamakh
weve been here before guys..i’ll believe it when i see it
JJ, it has to change, his contract is up for renewal, this summer or summers no more for him at arsenal…..
dutch 1-0 welsey power strike…
keep hope jj, we have two more months yet to get players
I just love the fact the Japanese have a player called Honda, yes I know, ive mentioned that before
rico
wenger wont care if his contract is up for renewel
he thinks everyone follows him blindly so he can do whatever he likes..the problem is the board have been mega rich because of wenger and the club stopped giving a toss about the fans years ago..
he’ll never get the boot..if he goes he will go on his own accord and if he goes next year why would he give a toss about this season if he has no intention of being here next..
jj, we are losing our defence but its not a great defence to be honest, the only player i hope we keep, apart from TV is Sol.
It could be for the best otherwise wenger would just stick with what we have and then we suffer the vast amount of goals conceded again…
I don’t think he is that kind of man jj…
never trust a liar…
yeah those defensive players wont be missed as long as wenger gets 2 TOP quality cb’s in as well as a top gk
only then will i see it as strengthening..
i dont see how losing our best defender and three of his backups, keeping the same gk and buying somebody nobodies ever heard of who has no international experience to replace him will improve us..
might as well just kept senderos..
VDV did little to impress today, he’s subbed now
Its just spin jj, a new word for the lesser intended lie
thats what gives me hope, he wouldn’t be letting them all go if he didn’t have a cunning plan, Koscielny, TV and Djourou are not enough, I know that and I know very little about football
he’s got something up his sleeve, i’m sure…
Song is ok as an emergency, but he needs to stay put in midfield…
Have you seen Koscielny play jj??
Anelka has been a nuaghty boy and is being sent home early
Its all good for the French ….
Hi Rico and JJ
I have two issues.
1) Wenger said he wanted to complete his signings BEFORE the WC. That would tie in with Chamakh and Kocielny. That’s it signings done! Then he lost Gallas etc etc. Then he said signings by END of WC. That would still be Cham and Koc then.
2) People say don’t worry Transfer Window is open until end of August. Heard it all before! When we have a crap start it will be because X and Y did not have a “proper” pre-season. Pre-season training begins early July — holes in defence not filled, anyone?
My memory isn’t that bad. We get the same rubbish every year. Please prove me wrong Arsene, but I won’t hold my breath.
RA, most of us feel the same and believe he will let us down again, i said to myself i will back him for one more summer – if he then carries on with a weak under srength squad then he can go….
Yes we have heard all his spin for too long, but at some stage it has to change, my hope/desperation is that it will be during July and August 2010!
Afternoon all.remember sky saying rooney is better than messi?of all big names he has been the poorest.don’t blame capello for rooney’s poor first touch.messi has been the best player in the tournament by a country mile under maradonna who most fans consider a poor coach.the media scorn us when we play beautiful footy and win nothing but england do neither of those.twitchy said brazil are overrated;well it looks like he has to look closer to home for the definition of that term.
Afternoon KTR7, thats a comment i struggle to disagree with
i actually think the england team have left their footie brains back home – capello though has picked a strange squad and makes crap substitions….
Rico
If you could pick any players from any country in the WC to play for Arsenal, I bet you would not pick any of the England players except perhaps Rooney.
Gerrard, Lampard? Too old; past their best. Green, James? Do me a favour. Wright-Phillips, Heskey? Leave off! And so on, and so on.
Capello has bugger all to work with. The premier league is stuffed with foreign players who make the Enland guys look good. On their own, they are found out. (Good post to elaborate on Rico?
Great write, rico. I think Wenger loves the thrill of finding those rough gems and turning them into crown jewels. I wouldn’t mind the finished article though, every so often. Oh and I think, I have given up on trying to be kind, Denilson will always be a lump of coal.
The english fan that broke into the dressing room after the match should get an english start.at least he can get through the defence…rico i missed you so much.don’t go away like that again…unless i tag along!
Hi agag, thanks – you popped into spam, not sure why
I think you’re right on both accounts, her does like to find a gem but the biggest thing is he won’t pay silly money for a polished article… Look at the Alonso fiasco…
RA a few days ago you asked of my impressions on the world cup;well messi has been the crown jewel so far.chile have been good as i expected .chile’s most impressive aspect was the energy they put on the pitch.i wish our players would show that kind of commitment in every game.their manager,Bielsa, also showed tactical flexibility by changing formations depending on how honduras played:in the first half honduras played one upfront.chile played a 4 man defence ensuring a spare cb.in the second honduras played 2 up top, chile changed their shape to 3 man defence ensuring a spare cb at the back.AW should be flexible and should make changes when things don’t work…Annan of ghana was impressive, lebandoski swiss rb,ozil of germany, alexis sanchez of chile have caught the eye RA in the first round.its still early days though…
RA, Rooney is poss the only one, i like Dawson too but he’s been tarnished by the spud shirt
When are you going to write for us??
You old smoothie you KTR7
No more hols planned for a few weeks
Hi K-T, Agag
That’s interesting K-T, I liked the way Chile played too but did not really know the names of the players I was watching. I will keep an eye out for Sanchez next time. I agree with you about Ozil (first game) and Annan.
Just seen Owusu-Abeyie miss a gilt edged chance. Remember him?
Rico, I am an ideas man, I would bore the pants off people with my writing style (too flippant, too verbose!).
Best leave it to you professionals. I am also waiting for Oliver to break the ice from Washington DC, his writing style is clear, concise, grammatical and interesting!
RA, you are wrong, very wrong – i would love to read a post of yours so would many others, get on with it and no more excuses
K-T, I have been surprised that many of the “big” name players, some of whom have been linked to Arsenal, have been very ordinary.
In defence, Subotic and Kjaer have been O.K. but nothing more than that.
In midfield, Van Der Vart, Gourcoff, have been middling to poor.
In attack, Govou, Podolski, Rooney have been poor.
That does not make them bad players but on the big occasion they just haven’t fronted up. V. strange.
rico, strangely enough, I had some Spam today (processed meat) and I almost never touch the stuff. Too salty.
How did everyone find Robin? It was unfortunate that he couldn’t find a goal; but he moved well and put a shift in for some defensive duties too.
Affelay was sprightly and created, almost from nothing, two consecutive dangerous plays. Wasn’t Wenger thinking of buying him? I think he would be a good buy. Van der Wiel played well too.
Hola, KT. Looks like you’ve seen all the games! How are you?
RA, oh you are too modest.
KTR7 & RA
What amazes me is how different players are playing from game to game, the first german game they were outstanding and many of the players would have been perfect players for us, the second game they were dire… it seems to be the trend so far in this competition…
Apart from England of course who have been consistantly dire!!
agag
i used to love spam in my meat eating days… thankfully i resist easily these days
i thought Robin did ok, but again the game was really tame in my view, but Affelay did add spark at the end
Rico I highlighted earlier some players who have disappointed me. But leaving aside England it is also fascinating to think that Spain, Germany, France have all lost agame so far.
Even Brazil really struggled. The only team who can think they are queen bees, (that is just an expression, Maradonna is straight), and have lived up to their reputation is Argentina.
RA, KTR7 was right in what he said earlier – Madonna has taken a whole load of stick during the build up to this competition, but it seems that just at the right time he has not only the team sorted out but himself too – i am not a fan of his, but credit where its due…
hi guys
no i havent seen him play i dont think im the only one either
im sure hes shit hot but my point is i would like him to be one of two cbs were going for..
i dont want to see us lose a million players when we are supposed to be strengthening that area to sign one guy whos never played a big game in his life and to be told by wenger ‘there you go you lucky set of fans you, i can now compete with chelsea and we need a defensive overhaul so ive surprised you with this guy from accrington stanley, gosh i do spoil you’….
Agag i have indeed seen all including new zealand games!im on a scouting mission agag and i will let you know of my views.i think there are alot of teams are more comfortable with the ball than england.heck even algeria!england play 11 a side footy with even 10 year olds!at such an age the dutch/spaniards play 5 a side footy to improve technical abilities such as passing and first touch.as it stands even if they go through they will get beat by serbia/ghana/germany.in the 4-4-2 england will be destroyed by ghana/germany who play no.10′s in ozil/ayew who will exploit the huge space in between the midfield and defence.this imbalance in mf is brought by playing gerrard on the left who will push forward and inwards, lampard may as well have the samsung logo printed on his shirt as he couldn’t care less unless he gets paid.serbia to me have the best defence in the tournament in kolarov-subotic/kuzmanovic-vidic-ivanovic.krasic would peg cole back while jovanovic would roast johnson.Capello has to change tactics…
this tournament is the pits..
those trumpets make the atmosphere unbearable and the ball makes the football unbearable..
nobody can control it and every shot free kick or cross ends up in row z..
I cannot give up meat. I tried to go vegetarian once and it lasted the whole of tea time!
I have yet to be convinced by Argentina. I admit, I am annoyed enough by the stains that Messi has ruined Argentinean football for me.
RA, you could write about that. You’re eloquent pre- and post- drinks, you would turn in something finely written, I’m sure.
Howdy all Ghana just shot themselves my oh my the last game will be a cracker
jj, i haven’t either, it was meant to start a bit of fun – but you left me
Rico what makes the argies amazing is their team spirit.playing messi behind a workhorse(tevez) and a clinical finisher(higuain) has set up messi to shine.of course it helps to have forwards who have scored a total of 150+ goals in the past season.their defence however is a real worry…
Jj I must agree the vuvuzela are crap and the ball is just a joke but England were crap Algeria should have taken advantage
RA of course you can write.in fact there are many potential writers on this blog.howdy erick and jj…
lol rico sorry i nipped to the shop and bumped into a pal and ended up in the pub watching the match..
England are pitiful all around. No two ways about it. But what else do you expect from an assemblage of stars whose egos far exceed their talent? I am harsh. But Terry? Lampard? Gerrard? Come on! And Rooney got stroppy again. He really is Shrek!.
Hey, Weeds. Howdy?
K-tr7 howdy Higuan is crap just riding behind the stars
most teams have been crap erick…
i can count the number of games ive actually enjoyed on one hand
very poor
Agag how is Wath
Rico you must be proud of England
True JJ am waiting for Brazil and Ivory coast it seems to be a cracker
Eriiiiiiiiiiiiick
KTR7, there are many, but no-one wants to write
jj, thats the only way to watch this WC, half pissed
ive got a couple of quid on ivory coast for the cup..
50-1..shit hot odds..
they a team of individuals but if they gel for 5 games they’ll win it..
JJ teams are set out not to lose.most teams have also immensely improved in terms of tactics and technique.the second round of games have improved with some crackers such as USA vs slovenia.it will get better jj and theres nothing better than seeing an underdog prevail…
Erick, I thought England would be bad, but not this bad, but i have to agree with jj, most games have been poor – i really enjoyed SA on the opening day but its gone downhill since then..
Ghana missed chance after chance today, I so wanted them to beat the aussies…
jj, how can you
I’m rooting for Cameroon from the African sides…. If they get Song in there, they could do really well…
Rico
im routing for ghana, rico..
but my wallet is routing for ivory coast..
Erick, you are very hard on Higuain. Strikers ought to score and he has! A hat trick , no less. What more could you ask for?
I suspect WATH is a passed out inebriated heap somewhere in SA, hugging a GG bottle to his chest
KT @ 5:02, I agree about the English. Gerrard has been poor, but Lampard’s been practically a non-entity. I thought Serbia’s defense in their game against Ghana was passable. I enjoyed that. Vidic and Ivanovic losing made me smile.
Hola, JJ.
Cameroon got a must win game hope Song players
hello JONJON i just want u to no that joe cole is not better than nasri and rosiky at all atho we need him.rosisky and nasri ve got what they call skill and just coz they were injurede last season so u ve to think about their past b4 u make such astatement.otherwise as for me i hope it will be our home grown DJOURO and VAMERLEN(tv)inn our defence and wenger should just buy back up.djouro showed that wen we had toure and gallas all fit in 2009.he was the best defender b4 getting injured and i can be happy for that.what we need most is another strong defensive midfielder to help song to protect our defence and i beliv we are shall be complete.if fabrigas goes i think nasri is the best candidate to replace him.we can only buy defensive midfielder but we ve alot of players in attacking to replace fab, altho we all love him much but nothing to do.AND AS I NO WENGER WILL NOT BUY ANY KEEPER COZ WITH WHAT I VE SEEN IN WORLD CUP ALL KEEPERS MAKE MISTAKES but he should loan out fabaiski and my line up would be like this for next season
ALMUNIA
EBOURE DJOURO VAMERLEN CLICY
SONG NEW dm (or nasri not diaby)
fabrigas
chamak (joe cole) van persie ashavin
these are my views so u can also make yos if we cant agree and bench i would ve (wolcot, sagna, bentner, denilson, vella, eduado, cambell, new two defenders, manone, wilshere should remain on loan for one more season)
Hello all..
?
Erick, Is vuvuzela good for bandits
agag, WATH is alive and well
He should be hugging a hot water bottle, its really been cold where he is
Agag he scores tap in and thats it no assist no hardwork nothing I just don’t think he is a top player. Ghana must be ready to beat Germany they might regret
Hi STV – i hate the bloody vuvuzela
nice comment osuna patrick..
i think rosickys past it and nasri is struggling to adapt to PL..
in my opinion cole is what nasri should aspire to be and cole is what rosicky used to be..
cole also has bundles of skill..hes probably the most skilful player england have..hes quite unenglish..
and hes got tonnes of medals…
Like the reply Agag.. better that rooney atleast (so far)
Stv bandits can’t stand the vuvuzela
I feel its a better weapon Erick.. there are thousand wasps in each of it.Wath will be dough like wenger when he is back..
yes JONJON,i also understand that about cole but dont u think we need more of adefensive midfielder to help song than attacking midfielders at the moment?how do u see that?we need to protech our defence and goal keeper b4 we can attack, for me i see altho we blame almunia but he also lucked good protection so we should think both ways coz all keepers make mistakes or all players make mistakes but why do pipo over blame almunia only yet before the ball reaches almunia it must fast pas thro defenders and midfielders.why dont we fans also blame midfielders and defenders coz like to compare almunia is better than valdes of barcelona but valdes has more protection that is why.other players must also learn to workhard to protect their keepers.
altho we buy another keeper he will stil conceed alot of goals if our defenders and midfielders dont protect him well.we should lear to think both ways
totally agree..we need a more defensive midfielder..
but i also think that other than cesc we have nobody who can unlock a defence and we struggle when he doesnt play..
nasri rarely plays well away from home and doesnt suit the wide role..
id prefer to keep cesc and add joe cole to play with him…
but i agree i want to see a all action duracell bunny midfielder becuase our midfield is very lack lustre and lacks pace and workrate..
Erick, haha. You’re no Higuain fan, I can tell.
Hello, STV. How are you? Haaaate those vuvuzelas.
rico, my brain activity flatlines at 25 degrees centigrade, seriously. I’m too used to heat and humidity. I hope WATH warmed his GG bottle and took it under the duvet.
Hello, osuna.
Almunia himself cost us atleast 6 poins.. and was an accomplice in so many other mistakes..
OP
youve just said what ive been saying since flamini left..
we have nobody who does the dirty work and the defense gets exposed..gallas and tv are two of the best Cbs in europe never mind the PL but when you come under raid after raid of attack with no protection you conceed dodgy goals..having a poor keeper also dont help..
song does ok but hes not all action so he gets caught out of position alot and cant get back..
denilsons just shit..
Anyone see heskey try a stepover last night?he tripped over himself!english players are so poor technically its unreal…jj rosicky was only missing an end product,he was doing everything else right.with a proper preseason he’ll come good.i agree on nasri though…
so as me Agag.. now enjoing the rains.. but no goal rain in SA.. you sounds medical very much agag..
ktr
the thing with rosicky is that the PL moves so fast nowadays that if you miss 2 minutes it take 10 games to get up to speed..
the man missed 2 years…the games changed and got quicker and rosicky is struggling to adapt again..at 30 hes not going to find it easy to come back and have an impact like before..i think hes past it..
I hate to see almunia in the posts again jj.. nasri can only get better.. domenech’s (though foolish) action is a lesson to him.. TR7.. hmm lets see..
suhail
to be honest i think domenech was right to drop nasri..
apart from that goal v porto hes done nothing for 2 years and ive been a bit dissapointed that we paid 11 mil for him when we could have bought snjeder for the same price…
if nasri doesnt come good this year i reckon he signature was just a waste of money..
no jj, rosicky is fit, mean and ready to shine, next season is his time…
sentiments mean nothing in football rico..
i love him as much as you but something tells me his games gone..
lets see if he makes it through pre season first..
JJ no one criticizes nasri more than me.he has alot of talent but what is the use of a player showing up in home games only.i hope he improves.on TR7 he has been injured for long,so has cole.he struggled to make chavs squad and then you suddenly think he is good enough for us?if rosicky is past it so is cole since they are sailing in the same boat…its good the dutch have won their games without firing on all cylinders.in the past they ran out of steam in the quarters…
yeah,SUHAIL, i also dont want to see that name almunia but remember altho we buy another keeper but without good protection he will stil conceed lots of goals so before u over blame almunia lets pray wenger strengthens our defensive midfield and defence.
cole would walk into the chelsea team..but for some reason he doesnt fit anchovis style of player so he wasnt getting any gametime..
id have cole over malouda any day of the week but it appears not the case at chelsea..
I am pessimistic about the Wenger’s transfers jj.. looks like Wenger will keep cesc for another year and pretends like he’s done the next big thing
K-T
I think it is a bit sweeping to say all English players are so poor technically.
There is a Sky TV programme on Saturday mornings during the season. They have a weekly skills competition for club youth players. The standard of technical skills shown by these kids is absolutely phenomenal. The world youth “keepie Uppee” champion is an English kid. Unfortunately, a lot of these kids don’t make it in professional football.
Trouble is, technical skills in England are often overlooked in favour of big, athletic youngsters who can rush around at 90 mph/kmph. Youngsters like Wilshire are really the exception, but technical skill, we have it in spades, but thwe clubs don’t want them.
Hey Rico, that’s almost an article!
you know something guys..
if the fa make the world cup ball the official ball next season it wont matter who we play in goal everyone will have the same problem..
something a bit fishy about cole then jj…
i know, its me being a softie with rosicky but i just feel he owes us and he knows it, added to that, i think he wants to give us all something back…
Soory OP, how rude of me not to have said hello
i also beliv in what RICO says that rosiky is ready to shine but without good defensive midfielder we will never win atrophy again this nseason.altho we buy that goal keeper of shoulin soccer(chinese film)but without good defense and midfield then we are nowhere but agood defense and midfield can make agoal keeper look classic
RA, I always watch that, its fun
Just like Kameeoke
Osuna, you are right. I am not an Almunia fan but our central defence lets him and Flapianxski down badly.
We need to increase the defensive protection.
Wenger’s solution? An unknown 6 foot centre back from a small French club. If he thinks that will do it he’s potty.
RA i have not said all english players,i meant the ones preffered to play lack that ability which is a reflection on english footy as a whole.in fact i whole heartedly agree with you…jj chavs were champions playing a diamond formation.j.cole was perfect for the hole but why was he not played?i doubt ancellotti would let go of a key player without a fight.under mourinho he was class jj but now he has become average am sad to say.i hope him being english isn’t clouding your judgement…because i value your opinions highly.
right O Patric.. Song showed us how imp that position is.. need to strengthen defense too with some strong players. But the man is wenger
Rosicky will be key next season jj i assure you.he only got injured twice since December and surely he is making strides.why don’t you give him a fighting chance?
Sorry K-T, I misunderstood.
The players in the England team were technically inept in both their games. Embarrassing!
hi pato, thats exactly it, you have an outstanding keeper that saves you games, every unit looks better.. not only that, a great keeper spreads confidence to those in front of him…
RA, add to that their lack of desire and passion for the shirt they wear, very embarrassing…
ktr
he was barley used since december..thats why..
i just dont think hes got it in him and if asked to play more than 5 games in a row he would break down..
i’ll give him a chance cos i like him but i dont think hes going to play as much as a part as everyone thinks he will
I want both Rosicky and Samir to blow us all away next season.
Of course I have my doubts, but I love the way they play, it is the antithesis of the crass, physical, lumbering approach of players from clubs like Wigan, Stoke, Manure. O.K. I threw the last one in because I can’t stand them!
have agag and erick gone for the day
Samir’s bottom may blow you away RA, its a tad on the large side
What are you implying, Rico? Wath will be jealous if that rascal Erick is in the hen coop!
Am off.. stay cool jj .. good night all
Rico, its his secret for high speed sprinting, it’s called jet propulsion. I believe Van der Fart uses the same technique!
Rico’s taste in men have been reflected on both samir and theo.combine the two,add GG maybe you’ll get wath!speaking of wath it wouldn’t surprise me if he was the one who broke into the english locker room!problem is we wanted him to break into the spanish one…his face is now plastered all over SA!
K-T, couldn’t have been Wath, he would have stuck vuvuzelas where the sun don’t shine.
Still here, rico. Erick’s been a vanisher these past few says. His teams must be driving him to drink spiked shakies
jj, Rosicky will come good. He was already looking the biz the last few games he’s played. To be fair, it’s not as if any/many of our players go great for five straight games.
Maybe, Robin (but then he gets a lengthy lay-off), TV5, YKW, but who else?
RA, rico is a thigh woman, but likes Sol’s behind, if memory serves.
You boys are bad, very bad
are you all picking on me
Night night STV, see you tomorrow I hope…
RA VDF
Hola agag, its Sols thighs, just look at them
You are spot on
Bendtner and song are starting.watch out for simon poulsen the danish lb.
Girls, I cannot comprehend the attraction of Sol’s thighs or is that a typo for Sol’s size.
I was in Venice recently and I took a gondola under the famous Bridge of Thighs. V. illuminating.
Agag you come from manila?those soap operas are usually loved by women but i find them quite predictable and boring…
Got to go and watch Bendie and Song.
Actually, ladies you have confused me, I realise my error now, it was the Bridge of Sighs.
I’m off to watch the footie too all, thanks for the fun – its great during a very boring WC
Be good all, stay safe and see you tomorrow
RA
I find women quite puzzling!their tastes and preferences are quite bizzare at times.no wonder they say women respond more to words and touch while we alphamales like what please the eye…
KTR7, how can you say that
RA, you are very funny.
KT, I don’t like our soap operas. The dialogue is atrocious. No self-respecting woman says those things in real life. I like Taiwanese dramas though.
hiya rico! good post, interesting points. Some of the players we are being linked with may be flash in the pans, and some may not play well at this tournament but are coming off solid club seasons. Since AW has openly acknowledged that the defense is a priority, perhaps he is looking a some specific qualities (height, presence for instance) rather than specific players? There seems little doubt that he is interested in Koscielny, I am speculating the transfer fee is the issue now. Considering that we are on the verge of losing three centre-halves from last season, I hope we are not quibbling over a couple of million quid. Stick to our principles by all means, but if the alternative is missing out on a player AW seems to rate, I would prefer to bite the bullet this one and secure the player. That is speculation, who knows what is really going on. I understand frustration making the rounds about AW saying he wants to complete all his signings prior to the World Cup – unless I am greatly mistaken, however, he stated this is something wants to do, not something he promised he would do. Whether it was realistic or not (and I do not think it was, as why would a WC player, who felt they will have a good tournament, sign before the cup and miss on their value potentially skyrocketing). I think that he has been trying – if comments from the Koscielny camp and PHW regarding the offer to Fulham for Schwarzer are anything to go by. Signings – other than Chamakh – have not been made, so no use in getting upset. Not too many other clubs have done much business either: Barca with D. Villa is the biggest transaction that comes to mind. Let’s just see – I am sure he knows we need cover and not all needs can be addressed by promoting within, so I still expect to see some new faces before August 14th. Probably not eye-popping names, but as long as we bring in some pros who can do a job, I will be happy. I am sorry Cameroon was eliminated first, but I am happy NB52 grabbed a goal!
rico, I am looking back at the posts from earlier today, and in your 4:10PM post, you made reference to Xabi Alonso. I have heard this story several times and I have always felt it is urban legend, something Myles Palmer was fed, and something he subsequently spun as a means to bash AW. It is pretty well established that a couple of season ago, Benitez was looking to buy Gareth Barry from Villa, and if he were able to get Barry, Alonso would become expendable. However….Is there any actual proof that SERIOUS negotations to acquire Alonso ever took place? I accept that Alonso would have been happy to join Arsenal if he was replaced at Liverpool, and I think Cesc spoke openly how much he would like to have Alonso at the club. But I have a difficult time believing that Benitez, knowing Alonso’s qualities, would turn around and flog him off to one of Liverpool’s top four rivals. If he really wanted to sell him, would it not make more sense to negotiate with one of the top Spanish clubs? They were aware of Alonso, knew his qualities. Benitez would most likely get a better transfer fee from Spain and Alonso would not line up against his Liverpool side in domestic competition twice a season. Another thing that makes me suspicious is one of the reasons the “negotiations” allegedly broke down: Arsenal supposedly balked at paying a few million more than their alleged ceiling. Supporters frustrated at our transfer dealings often like to cite stinginess on AW and the board’s part – it seems awfully convenient to me that one of the big frustrations people have with our “front office” is the alleged unwillingness to pay big transfer fees, as this issue is a stick supporters (and Myles) often use to bash AW.

I have heard this story several times and I have always felt it is urban legend, kind of a myth, something Myles Palmer was fed, and something he subsequently spun as a means to bash AW. It is established that a couple of seasons ago, Benitez was looking to buy Gareth Barry from Villa, and if he were able to get Barry, Alonso would become expendable. However….Is there any actual proof that SERIOUS negotations to acquire Alonso ever took place? To my knowledge, nobody at Arsenal has denied the reports – but except in the instance of the recent Cesc bid, and PHW’s comments on Schwarzer, they usually keep their counsel on these issues. Note that I am not saying that the Alonso thing did not happen – just that I have not seen anything to indicate there were serious negotiations with Liverpool and that he was on the verge of transferring to Arsenal. Again, perhaps this information has been corroborated and I have just not seen it. In the absence of such corroboration, I am very skeptical that we were ever close to signing Xabi Alonso, and I further that the story was fabricated as an opportunity to take shots at AW and our board for transfer market inactivity.
heh, i posted one-and-a-half times. must be later than i think.
At any rate, Villa refused to sell Barry to Liverpool, so the Alonso to Arsenal thing became a moot point. I am curious, though – am I the only person who was suspicous when I head those stories? I just cannot see Rafa Benitez willing to sell Alonso to another Premiership side, let alone another top four side. He must have known how much an Alonso would have improved our side – how could it possibly have served Liverpool (and Benitez’) interests to strenghten Arsenal in such a manner? Whether Alonso wanted to come to Arsenal or not is irrelevant – if Benitez felt he needed to sell, there were plenty of other suitors that would have made more sense than Arsenal for both he and Alonso. Am I the only one who smelled a rat when these rumors first surfaces. If anyone has CREDIBLE CONFIRMATION that Liverpool were close to selling Alonso to Arsenal, I would love to see it, because it just does not make sense to me from Liverpool’s perspective. As you can probably guess, this has been bugging me for a little while…
hey oliver..
disagree about alonso..
rafa wanted barry, but rick parry went and spunked his transfer kitty on robbie keane..
in order for barry to move to liverpool rafa had to raise the funds..aston villa wanted 18mil for barry so rafa were looking for around the same for alonso..
but as normal wenger pissed about bidding something like 11mil at the very last minute on deadline day..expecting livepool to sell..
two problems with this..
1…by bidding near the transfer deadline, wenger left rafa with naff all time to close a deal for barry
2..by bidding about 7million short of what rafa wanted, rafa wasnt able to afford barry anyway…
the result was that rafa told wenger to stick it…and we missed out on one of the PL’s best midfielders for a few poxy quid..
its a myth that the alonso deal depended on the barry deal…the truth of it is that the barry deal depended on the alonso deal..wenger didnt give rafa enough time or money to be able to do the deal for barry so they kept alonso..
i know some people like to defend wenger but i can assure you AW messed that one right up..
Morning all, new one up….
JonJon, thanks for the reply. I am confident that AW was interested in Alonso, and I believe we even did actually lodge a bid for him. There are two things in this story I do not believe: we lost out on Alonso because we wouldn’t pay an extra 200,000 quid (that is the one Myles Palmer kept banging on about) or some other relatively small sum; and that Liverpool ever intended to sell Alonso to Arsenal. I agree on the other points: Rafa wanted Barry, so Alonso’s first team place would have been under threat and selling him would have financed the deal. Cesc did openly say that it would be great to have Alonso in our Arsenal side. I think there were two periods when we were interested: between the 08-09 seasons when Flamini left for Milan and Gilberto for Panathanaikos. We were without a def mid and Alonso would have been great. That was also the same time that Rafa was trying to get Villa to sell Barry. And then the end of the early 2010 transfer window (where we signed Arshavin). I will acknowledge that we probably submitted a formal offer (or two) for Alonso during this period, but we never got him. I do not deny that we had genuine interest in Alonso. My point is that I consider the stories that AW pissed this one away because he refused to stump up a few extra quid as nonsense. I have seen nothing other than speculation that suggests this. Further, I think that there was never a relistic chance we would have gotten Alonso anyway, because Liverpool were not interested in selling to us. Again, I have seen nothing reliable to indicate that Liverpool would have done business with us. We all seem to agree that we made at least one bid to Liverpool and it was rejected: some believe the rejection was because our bid was too low. I believe it was because Liverpool had no interest in strengthening a top four rival with a serious need at a key position. My opinion.
