Yesterday, Atletico Madrid announced/unveiled Fran Merida as their new player and I have to admit, I am very sad we have not been able to keep him….
Barca born Fran, stolen by our mighty fine manager (well, he used to be) from the Spanish Club, Barcelona a few years ago has finally left us.
Funny enough, he followed in the footsteps of another stolen boy from the Catalan club, his name, go on, you don’t need me to tell you…
Both born and bred in Barcelona, both part of the youth set up at Barca, both left to be guided by Arsenal and to learn from Arsene Wenger…
So now Fran Merida has gone, but that is where it’s strange, he has signed for a club in Madrid and not even Real Madrid!!
Here he is in his new club shirt!! 
That would be like a player being born in one of the houses near to Highbury, going off overseas to say Ajax, then on return to England, signing for the Spuds or Chavs – would you do that?? Like heck would you, no more than I would….
Wouldn’t it really be funny though if old Jose Mourinho, who says he still loves Chelsea, decided to kill two birds with one stone? I would laugh my socks off (I know I shouldn’t) if, when he is confirmed as the Real Madrid Manger, he contacts Arsene Wenger and tells him the Madrid will pay 80M for Cesc Fabregas – or 60M and Lassana Diarra or Van Der Vaart, or even Casillas…..

What Jose has then done is help out the chavs (in his view) by making us weaker, and really pissed off Barcelona for nicking the local rivals player from under their nose. But in reality, all he has done is cheesed off Barca, cheesed off Cesc and along the way, given our mighty fine club lots of money to rebuild with. If we accept either deal we could possibly be better off.
Imagine this scene, but with Cesc in a Real Madrid shirt….
If Cesc has to go and I hope he doesn’t, I really hope Jose Mourinho throws a big fat spanner in the works……
But funny enough, the only winner would be us, surely? We have got the best deal for Arsenal, strengthened our on side either by the swap player and players Wenger will be able to get with the money or by getting the money alone and on top of that we have shown the footballing world that we are no longer a club to be pissed around!!
But what would be really funny is, Fran Merida and Cesc Fabregas, both Barca born, both Arsenal ‘made’, then become rivals in La Liga and both at Madrid rather than their home town……

To begin this blog, I must profess an interest. I’ve always been a fan of Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood.
He is a complete one-off in the increasingly sanitised and corporate world of football. He is engaging, funny, frank with his opinions, occasionally indiscreet and never one to take himself too seriously. He is the kind of guy who would sit with supporters and entertain them for hours with anecdotes about Arsenal over a cigar and a glass of gin.
In short, he is of the old school; the living embodiment of what gives Arsenal much of its character and identity as the most traditional and decent of clubs. He is also, of course, the third generation from the Hill-Wood family to have been Arsenal chairman.
His critics might say he is too old-fashioned to be chairman of a modern Premier League club, but they should also consider some facts. In his 28 years as chairman, he has appointed two of the greatest managers in the club’s history in George Graham and Arsene Wenger, seen the club win five league titles, helped oversee a successful move to a new stadium and presided over one of the most financially well managed clubs in world football. Not a bad record.
But another facet of Hill-Wood’s chairmanship is the occasional tendency to come out with the sort of honest remark that would not be signed off by any PR department. He did it once over Stan Kroenke and, again it seems over Cesc Fabregas when he suggested recently that the Arsenal captain might not get into the Barcelona team.
According to today’s Daily Mirror, the perceived slight from Hill-Wood was a significant factor in Fabregas’s decision to want to leave Arsenal. If so, it would be one of the worst examples of a thin-skinned footballer I can ever remember.
Just consider what Hill-Wood actually said: “If you want my opinion, I’m not sure he would even get in their team. Do they need him? I’m not sure that they do.” Now if Fabregas has really taken offence at that, he needs a reality check.
For a start, it is true. Fabregas is not assured of getting into a Barcelona midfield that also includes Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Keita and Toure.
And, even if it wasn’t true, it is hardly the end of the world for Hill-Wood to offer a personal football opinion that is not laced with the usual sycophantic nonsense that most club officials display towards their star players.
Ultimately, it is also not really believable that Fabregas would allow the biggest decision of his career to be affected by one casual remark from Hill-Wood. The wider suspicion is that it is an attempt by someone in the Fabregas or Barcelona camp to deflect blame for his decision. If so, it hasn’t worked. For if today’s Mirror scoop looks bad on anyone, it is Fabregas and not Hill-Wood.

Then again, I don’t think Cesc would ever pen a deal with Real Madrid to be honest.

This contracts-thingy is a bit strange I think. What does it really do? It should be the bond between a player and the club for a certain amont of money during a certain amount of time. But it clearly doesn’t work that way. If a player really want to leave, the manager or the club almost never stand in the way of that, because it’s no good having a player that won’t turn up for the games, is it? And if a club wants to sell the player, what should the player do? Sit around for a couple of years untl his contract runs out and then try and find another club and get a decent paycheck allthough he hasn’t played a game for a few years?
So – what is contracts really good for?

Yeah, something definitely has to be done about this. I read somewhere they could get a fine up to $1 million in the NBA for “tapping-up” players. Some coach for Dallas Mavericks (I think?) was talking on national radio about how it would be a boost to have LeBron James in his team, and BAM! 100,000 dollars was taken out of his clubs pocket. It was a mere remark, not a constant stream of bolloks like in the case we have with Cesc-Barca.
We have the tapping-up rules, but they (UEFA) don’t do anything about it. It’s a shame.

tapping up only works if the player actually moves to the club..if cesc doesnt move but we still make a complaint both the club (barca) and the player (cesc) will be fined..we are just shooting ourselves in the foot if cesc remains an arsenal player but he gets hit by a massive fine..it just makes an unhappy player more unhappy..we dont want that..
if he moves then we can sting them and my guess is thats why the club has kept quiet on the issue..they are waiting to see what happens

I don’t find it that weird. He hasn’t done much good since he began playing in the first team, a few breath-taking moments apart. Liverpool away in the CL a couple of years ago for example. He doesn’t have the technique required on this level. YET. The problem I feel, is that I really can’t see it coming either, he seems far off when it comes to controlling the ball and making the right decisions. Unfortunately.
But then again. This rant comes from a guy who once upon a time literally wanted Alexandre Song to be sent out in space in a small box, never to return again to the surface of Earth. Erick i hope let me try to explain:with 2 upfront,a no.10 like AA plays just behind them.this system requires a pure dm (song) with two wide players(wingers) to form a diamond.if we play 3 upfront,aw said chamakh will not play as a winger and neither will rvp so i expect them to be a bit central with AA taking a more withdrawn role towards the left but behind the front two.behind the front 3 is an AM slightly to the right.due to the attacking nature this system requires two holding midfielders forming a triangle.i’ll be able to predict better according to how we act in the window but i hope that helps…

For me, what is most important is playing the right players in their right position, Diaby is not a right sided midfield player, Denilson is not a HM/DM – AA is not a CF…… Theo is not a winger…. etc etc.
Where we go wrong is having a squad full of footballers rather than a squad full of players to cover every position (if that makes sense)

Cesc didn’t play agag…kaka and melo were involved in a brawl in training.melo made a rash tackle on kaka who wasn’t impressed.melo had 15 yellows and 3 red cards last seasom by the way…
